I'm a Pro Photographer: Here's How to Get the Best Firework Photos With Your Phone

Whether you're taking photos on July 4th, at New Year's or for another celebration, fireworks are always amazing opportunities for photos. The bright lights and vibrant colors contrast incredibly well with the dark night skies, making your photos look beautifully dramatic with very little effort on your part. While taking photos at night used to be something you'd need a big DSLR for, today's best camera phones, including the iPhone 16 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Galaxy S25 Ultra, are capable of taking stunning photos after dark. Even budget options like the Pixel 9A or Nothing Phone 3A can capture great looking images at night. So whether you're pointing towards the exploding sky with your phone or a mirrorless camera, here are my top tips as a professional photographer on how to take photos of fireworks that are sure to wow your friends. Try night mode With most firework displays taking place at night, you're likely going to need to use your phone's night mode to capture a bright image. While some phones, like the iPhone 16 Pro, have night modes that kick in automatically when they detect it's dark enough, other phones might have a dedicated mode for taking photos at night. Before you head out to your show, make sure you know how to turn on night mode on your phone. Taken with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, the fireworks aren't exactly spectacular at Taylor Swift's Eras tour, but this shot shows the importance of having more compositional elements in your scene than just some fireworks by themselves. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Lock the exposure Night mode is probably going to be the easiest way to get good-looking results with little effort, but it's not foolproof. Its main problem is that it'll try to make the whole scene brighter, and that might not look great -- those dark skies need to remain dark in order for the fireworks themselves to really stand out. If you find night mode shots looking a bit lacklustre, try pressing and holding on an area of the image to lock the exposure, and then use the slider to darken the image until you think it looks good. By locking the exposure like this it'll stop it resetting back to default after you take each image. If your phone has a pro mode, you can likely set the exposure to a darker point manually. Get creative with manual controls Most phones should be able to snag a great looking image with little extra effort on your part, but sometimes it pays to get a bit creative with your camera settings. One of my favorite tricks for photos of fireworks is to use a long exposure -- maybe a second long -- which turns the crisp fireworks into light streaks in the sky. It's a very different look, but I really enjoy the abstract impression it gives. By using a one-second exposure, I was able to blur the motion of the fireworks to create this abstract result. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Some cameras have pro modes that give you manual control over shutter speed, but there are various camera apps for both iOS and Android that will give you this functionality. My suggestion? Play around with your settings and see what it does to your images when you press the shutter button -- you might be surprised how much you like the effect. Keep a steady hand Keeping your phone steady is crucial if you want a sharp image, even when using night mode. Simply holding it firmly can make all the difference. Hold your phone with two hands and keep your elbows tucked in to give you a strong and stable stance. Try taking multiple photos each time as it'll increase the odds that at least one of them will be nice and sharp. Although it's not always as convenient, if you can put your phone or camera on a tripod, you'll appreciate the extra effort it took to haul that extra gear. Think about the composition While taking a photo of the fireworks by themselves in the sky might look quite cool, you can make your image even more impressive by thinking about the composition within the shot. Try to include foreground details, like other people revelling in the display or interesting buildings or food stands. By including ground features, it gives size context to the fireworks overhead, making them look even bigger and grander by comparison. I loved putting this hugging couple in the bottom half of my frame. It tells the story not just of the fireworks, but of the people enjoying them as well. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Shoot in raw, edit later While your phone might capture a great-looking shot with just the tap of the shutter button, I often find that some post-processing in apps like Google's Snapped or Adobe Lightroom makes all the difference. On my iPhone 16 Pro, I'll shoot in ProRaw, which gives me deeper control over the colors and contrast in my image later. I'll often adjust the white balance to suit the scene, increase the contrast and maybe even introduce some clarity into the image that can really help those bright details pop in the sky even more. There's no right or wrong way to edit an image, so my best advice is to spend some time playing with the sliders in your editing app of choice and see what you can come up with.

Apple's upcoming budget MacBook could launch sooner than soon!

Apple may finally be preparing to launch a truly affordable MacBook. According to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant is working on a new entry-level laptop that could debut with the A18 Pro chip—the same processor expected in the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models. This move marks a significant shift from Apple's usual reliance on M-series chips for Macs. The A18 Pro, though designed for smartphones, has leaked benchmark scores suggesting performance close to the original M1 chip. That means it's still more than capable of handling everyday tasks like browsing, video streaming, document work, and even light photo editing. Expected to feature a 13-inch screen similar to the MacBook Air, the new model could also come in fun color options like silver, pink, and yellow. Mass production is slated for late 2025 or early 2026, with Apple reportedly planning to manufacture between 5–7 million units in 2026—indicating high expectations for this category. The real game-changer? Price. If the new A18 MacBook hits the market at $700–$800, it would be the first time Apple breaks the $999 price barrier for a MacBook. This would open the Apple ecosystem to a broader demographic including students, casual users, and those in the education segment—currently dominated by Chromebooks and Windows laptops. Though unconfirmed, this rumored MacBook could become one of Apple's most significant releases in 2026, offering a blend of premium design, macOS software, and affordability. Stay tuned as more details emerge in the coming months.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro may come with this design change

As the launch of Apple iPhone 17 series gets closer, rumorus about the upcoming iPhone series have increased. The 2025 iPhone lineup may consist of four models – iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and the all-new iPhone 17 Air. Tipster Majin Bu recently shared alleged renders of the iPhone 17 Pro that shows a significant design change with the coming-soon device. The leakster, in a blog post, claims that the Cupertino-based company may reposition the Apple logo which is currently placed slightly off-center and below the camera module since the iPhone X. With the iPhone 17 Pro models, the logo may now be moved lower, toward the center bottom of the phone. 'This recent discovery, reported by direct sources among case manufacturers, marks an evolution in Apple's aesthetic language,' Bu writes. The report adds that the repositioning of Apple logo has raised concerns among manufacturers about possible interference, leading the industry to look for ways to ensure continued compatibility. Some factories have already produced cases based on the current design and are waiting for official confirmation before making changes. To address the issue, case makers are working on design changes. Apple iPhone 17 Pro expected features A report by The Information previously said that the iPhone 17 Pro may come with a redesigned rear panel composed of both aluminum and glass. It may feature an aluminum rear panel, housing a camera bump, bigger than the one found on the iPhone 16 Pro models. The report further added that the iPhone 17 Pro may come with an aluminium frame, replacing the titanium frame like their predecessors. On the specifications part, the phone may come powered by Apple's A19 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process. iPhone 17 Pro is said to offer 12GB of RAM, up from the iPhone 16 Pro's 8GB. For camera duties, it may have a 48MP telephoto lens, replacing the 12MP sensor found in the iPhone 16 Pro. For selfies, the smartphone is tipped to have a 24MP sensor. iPhone 16e vs Pixel 9a: Everything you need to know about Apple and Google's new budget flagships AI Masterclass for Students. Apple may soon launch a cheaper MacBook with iPhone chip, what we know so far

Apple might finally break the $999 barrier for its MacBooks. According to respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant is preparing to launch a new entry-level MacBook, powered not by its usual M-series chips, but by the A18 Pro, the same processor expected to debut in the iPhone 16 Pro series this year. While hardware specs remain largely under wraps, the shift to the A18 Pro processor marks a significant departure from Apple's norm.(REUTERS) The model is expected to enter mass production in late 2025 or early 2026, with Kuo hinting that Apple is planning to produce between 5–7 million units in 2026, signalling confidence in its appeal. It could feature a 13-inch display, matching the MacBook Air's screen size, and may come in new colour options such as silver, pink, and yellow. While hardware specs remain largely under wraps, the shift to the A18 Pro processor marks a significant departure from Apple's norm. Until now, every Apple Silicon Mac has relied on M-series chips, known for their high performance and energy efficiency in laptop-class workloads. What can the A18 Pro do? Despite being designed for iPhones, the A18 Pro chip is no slouch. Early benchmark leaks suggest a single-core score of ~3500 and multi-core score of ~8780, putting it roughly on par with the original M1 chip from 2020. While it falls behind the newer M4 chip in multi-core performance, it still offers more than enough power for everyday computing, especially for students, casual users, and budget-conscious buyers. Most daily tasks like web browsing, document editing, video streaming, and even light photo work are single-core intensive, meaning the average user won't feel a significant slowdown. Why is this a big deal? Apple has never released a MacBook priced below $999, the current starting price of the base MacBook Air M2. With this new model, the company appears ready to enter truly affordable laptop territory for the first time. If priced right, potentially in the $700–$800 range, the A18 MacBook could open up Apple's ecosystem to a far broader audience. It might also help Apple compete more directly with Chromebooks and Windows laptops in the education and entry-level markets. While the device remains unofficial, the rumoured combination of Apple's premium build, macOS experience, and competitive pricing could make this one of the most interesting product launches of 2026.
