Eberechi Eze to Arsenal set for talks as Gunner plot move for £68 million Crystal Palace winger
Arsenal are preparing to open talks with Crystal Palace over the potential signing of England international Eberechi Eze, as the club's summer transfer strategy gathers pace. Sources indicate that preliminary discussions have already taken place on the player's side over the past fortnight, involving senior figures within Arsenal's recruitment and football operations teams. Eze, 27, is understood to be open to the move, and personal terms are not expected to present any complications. While Eze has a £68 million release clause in his current contract, Arsenal are expected to engage Palace this week to explore whether a deal could be agreed without activating the full clause. The attacking midfielder netted eight goals and registered eight assists in the Premier League last season and is viewed by Mikel Arteta's side as a central creative option rather than a wide player. Arsenal set to make Eberechi Eze approach but remain keen on stunning trio of talentshttps:// — talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) July 14, 2025 Arsenal's pursuit of Eze comes alongside the imminent arrival of Noni Madueke from Chelsea. The winger has reportedly passed his medical ahead of a £52 million move and is considered versatile enough to cover both flanks. His arrival is seen as complementary rather than conflicting, as the Gunners look to strengthen centrally with Eze. In addition to Eze, Arsenal retain interest in several high-profile targets. Real Madrid's Rodrygo, Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, and AC Milan's Rafael Leão remain on the club's radar. However, any move for that trio is likely to depend on outgoings, specifically Leandro Trossard or Gabriel Martinelli. A deal for Sporting striker Viktor Gyökeres is also close to completion, as per veteran sports journalist Fabrizio Romano. 🚨🔴⚪️ Negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting remain ongoing in London with all parties involved. After commission reduced by agent plus €63.5m fee ready, Sporting ask for €10m add-ons to be easy/guaranteed. Arsenal and agents remain in talks to get the final green light. — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) July 14, 2025 The Gunners are expected to pay €63.5 million plus €10 million in add-ons, after a compromise was reached involving a waived agent commission. The final package matches Sporting's valuation while simplifying the transaction. Arsenal have also agreed terms with Valencia for 19-year-old defender Cristhian Mosquera in a deal worth nearly €20 million. The Spain youth international is expected to be officially unveiled soon. These moves follow the arrivals of Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi for £55.8 million and Brentford's Christian Nørgaard, who joined last week in a deal rising to £12 million. Kepa Arrizabalaga was signed from Chelsea for £5 million after a successful loan spell at Bournemouth, where he kept eight clean sheets. With the additions of Madueke, Gyökeres, and Mosquera imminent, Arsenal's summer spending is set to surpass the £200 million mark. Outgoings have been relatively limited. Nuno Tavares has completed a permanent switch to Lazio, while Brazilian winger Marquinhos has joined Cruzeiro for a reported £3 million.

James Whale records final ever interview with 'weeks left to live'
James Whale has been branded a 'legend and a friend' by one of his colleagues and a 'warrior to the end' after recording his last ever interview for TalkTV. The radio and TV host, 74, is best known for hosting The James Whale Radio Show, as well as for his work for talkSPORT and talkRADIO down the years. He was first diagnosed with kidney cancer in the year 2000 and in 2006 launched the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer to fund research and spread awareness. After losing wife, Melinda Maxted, to lung cancer in 2018, Whale revealed in 2020 that his own cancer had returned and spread to his brain, spine, kidney, and lungs. Five years on from that announcement, he revealed on his show in June that he had just 'weeks' left to live after receiving the news from his oncologist. And he's marked his final few weeks by conducting his last ever interview, with Clacton-on-Sea MP, and Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage. In a photograph shared on X, Whale and the controversial politician were snapped sitting in a garden, with the former reaching out to place a hand on Farage's elbow. Wearing a white shirt and a sun hat, Whale's legs were covered by a yellow blanket – the photo, bruises could be seen on his hands, and bandages were visible on his feet. Chuck Thomas, a producer on TalkTV, took several photographs of the occasion, calling Whale 'the bravest man I know', as well as 'a legend and a friend'. Speaking about the interview, which will be broadcast on TalkTV in the future, Thomas added: 'After 50 years in broadcasting, Whaley delivers one of the most compelling and profound conversations of his career.' He described the interview as 'a masterclass in asking the right questions' and invited Whale's followers to celebrate his life and career up to this point. @AndrewKNevett called the broadcaster 'a warrior to the end' while @British_Enjoyer said: 'Poor bloke. Never stopped. I'm sure lots of people will watch it.' Elsewhere, @MartP132 said: 'I've loved [Whale] since first hearing him on Radio Aire in the 80s. He is a brilliant broadcaster and I am so sad he is in this situation. Much love and strength to him and his family.' Whale revealed earlier this year that, through most of his recent cancer battle, days had been 'quite normal' for him – until things took a downturn quite suddenly. 'Until very recently, everything was quite normal for me. Everything was fine, and then you do get to a stage like I am now, with things getting to be very, very difficult. More Trending 'To anybody else who is in the final stages of cancer, you have my sympathy. I know exactly what you're going through; I do know. I look basically OK, I get told, 'You look alright' – it's all makeup.' In May, on his birthday, James revealed that he doesn't have high expectations of seeing Christmas 2025, having already come to terms with his devastating prognosis. 'As people know, I'm not about to die. Well, you never know, do you? I've had all my treatment.' Insisting that he doesn't want sympathy, he added: 'I don't want anybody feeling sorry. I'm just giving you a lowdown on it. If I make it to Christmas, I will be exceptionally lucky. Sometimes I think it will be easier just to have a heart attack and go.' Got a story? Celtic icon points to reassurance over potential new Rodgers deal
The Northern Irishman is into the final 12 months of his current deal at Celtic Park. When previously asked, Rodgers has made it clear that he's in no rush to decide on his future. Appearing on talkSPORT this morning, though, O'Neill reckons if the club's owner, Dermot Desmond, wants a new deal to happen, then it will all be in hand. 'Brendan is saying, north of the border, he's not in too much of a rush to discuss a new deal with Dermot Desmond," Jim White said when opening the conversation. "Would that be about right? Is he just getting his thoughts together?' O'Neill responded: 'I don't think there will be any major rush there for that. I think what he has done up there has been terrific. 'In all honesty, if Dermot is involved, which he will be strongly, then I don't think there is anything to worry about. "I wouldn't be too worried about the situation at all. It depends on what Brendan wants to do. I assume Celtic will want to keep him. 'But I have had dealings with Dermot Desmond. Dermot brought me into the football club. "If Dermot wants to keep him, he will go out of his way to do so. It's really as simple as that.'

‘I'd sit him down for two hours' – Former world darts champion told he is no longer world beater and to consider future
Smith has been on a downward spiral since winning being crowned champion of the world in 2023 IN TREBLE 'I'd sit him down for two hours' – Former world darts champion told he is no longer world beater and to consider future Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MICHAEL SMITH might have to admit he is no longer 'one of the world's top 32 players', according to Paul Nicholson. Two-time major winner Smith has failed to qualify for the World Matchplay for the first time since 2013. Credit: Getty St Helens thrower Smith sees his run of 60 consecutive appearances at televised ranked events ended. The 34-year-old sits outside the top 20 in the world following a run of poor form since his World Championship win at Ally Pally in early 2023. Former Players Championship Finals winner Nicholson believes Smith's absence from Winter Gardens next week is fair. He told talkSPORT: 'No, he shouldn't be there. It's as simple as that. It's not even close. READ MORE DARTS NEWS SMIRNOFF SLICE Darts icon Bobby George shows off amputated TOE he keeps in vodka 'If you look at the way Ryan Joyce qualified compared to Michael Smith — it's a big gap. 'We're not talking about something like when Mark Webster missed out on the Grand Prix by £50, which happened 14 years ago. 'That's a close call. This is £5,000. That's like making a final on the Pro Tour, or the equivalent of five first-round exits. It's not close.' Nicholson reckons the ProTour ranking system has given Smith a harsh but fair reminder that he needs to do more. 2 Former darts star Paul Nicholson has delved into Smith's downturn Credit: Getty CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS He added: 'The Pro Tour ranking system is actually very fair as a reflection of what Michael's done over the past 12 months. 'A lot of people forget—the Matchplay race started last July. It's a one-year ranking. He hasn't done enough to be in the top 16 of that list. So, as far as his absence goes — it's fair. Moment Michael Smith BREAKS dartboard in anger as he issues public apology 'And if Bully Boy had got in, looking at what Ryan Joyce has achieved over the last year — strong Euro Tour runs, consistent floor performances — it would probably be more controversial if Michael was in and Ryan was out.' 'The Asset' sees this as the perfect chance for Smith to reset his career. He revealed: 'I've got a strong opinion on this. I think this is a big opportunity for him. Every piece of adversity brings a chance. 'This is his chance to sit back this summer and ask, 'Where do I go from here? 'If he had scraped in, he might've just said, 'That's okay, we're still moving in the right direction.' He shouldn't be at the World Matchplay. It's as simple as that. It's not even close. Paul Nicholson 'But now he has to step back and really think, 'What do we do now?'' Nicholson suggested that while Smith's talent is unquestionable, his hunger to win might not burn as fiercely as it once did. He said: 'I'd sit him down for two hours and just listen. 'I want to know how hungry he is. I want to know what he wants for the future — and I don't want the stock answers: 'I want to be world champion again,' or 'I want to win the Matchplay.' 'That's not going to happen when you're not in the field. 'Maybe he needs to take a step back and realise — he's no longer a Premier League player. 'He'll always be a world champion — that can't be taken away. But Michael van Gerwen said something very honest earlier this year: 'Judge me on the player I am now, not who I was five or six years ago.' 'Michael was spot on. We have to judge Michael Smith on who he is now, not who he was in 2023. 'So I want to hear how he talks about his career now, and what his genuine goals are. Because they have to be different than they were two years ago.' He's no longer a Premier League player. Paul Nicholson Nicholson says Smith needs to dig deeper than ever to rediscover his best form. He explained: 'We've had Michael on a pedestal for a long time. We know his skill level. And I think what we've praised most in the last 18 to 24 months is his ability to dig deep. 'That's how he became a Grand Slam and World Champion — by being more resilient. 'But this is a whole new level of digging deep. He might have to admit to himself, I'm not one of the top 32 players in the world right now despite what the rankings say. 'So he needs to ask: What got me there? What's going to get me back? What do I need to prioritise to return to being world number one? Hard questions need to be asked, and the answers need to be brutally honest.'
