Council set up to strengthen skills training: Prioritise TVET, Chief Minister tells youths

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor called on youths in the State to open their minds and view Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a primary choice for building a bright future, not merely an alternative pathway. He said TVET now plays a significant role in the economic and social development of the State, in line with technological transformation and the current needs of the industry.
Advertisement 'TVET not only equips individuals with practical skills, but is also synonymous with empowerment, job opportunities and economic growth,' he said when launching the Sabah TVET Council (MTS), here, Monday. His speech was read by Deputy Chief Minister III/State Public Works Minister Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya. Hajiji said the TVET courses currently offered have been tailored to meet the needs of the fast-evolving job market and industrial sectors, making it a stable and viable career path for young people. 'I urge youths in the State not to hesitate to participate in the TVET field. Now is the time to change the perception and see TVET as a smart choice that opens doors to becoming professionals, entrepreneurs and innovators,' he said. According to him, the Sabah TVET Council is a commitment by the State Government to strengthen the technical training ecosystem, coordinate over 160 TVET institutions across the State and ensure that every graduate produced is truly ready to face the challenges of the working world.
Advertisement He said TVET is also considered a key driver for the State's development goals through the Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0 Development Plan and national strategic documents such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2030), the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). Hajiji also touched on the current technological revolution, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), which requires the younger generation to be equipped with new skills that are adaptive and innovation-oriented. 'The world of work is changing. If Sabah's youths are not prepared with relevant skills, we will be left behind. TVET is the best platform to develop a highly skilled human capital that will drive the State's progress,' he stressed. He said the launch of the Council marks a new era in empowering youth development through structured training aligned with industry needs – positioning Sabah as a competitive skilled workforce hub at the national and regional levels. Hajiji said it is not just an administrative structure, but a strategic platform that unites government agencies, training institutions, the industrial sector and key TVET players into a cohesive and inclusive ecosystem. According to him, the Council also acts as a policy coordinator, a driver for skills training direction and a strategic liaison for development fund applications from the Federal Government. Centralised price system to boost transparency

PENAMPANG: The Government will develop a centralised Price and Supply Repository System to monitor price trends and prevent manipulative practices in the market, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. He said the system, to be introduced under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), will provide a transparent data platform to detect abnormal price movements and support enforcement action against profiteering and cartel-like behaviour. 'This is a proactive step toward ensuring fairer market practices and greater price transparency across the supply chain, especially for essential goods,' he told reporters after officiating the Seminar Kenegaraan Malaysia Madani: Rancakkan Madani Sabah at ITTC Penampang. According to Armizan, the repository system will consolidate real-time information on pricing, supply volumes, and distribution to assist both consumers and regulators in making informed decisions. 'Through this system, enforcement agencies will be able to act more swiftly and decisively using data-driven evidence. It's a game-changer in combating unethical manipulation and protecting consumer interests,' he said. He added that the system will be developed through inter-ministerial cooperation and partnerships with industry players, including suppliers, retailers, and logistics operators. Armizan said the effort aligns with the Government's long-term plan to stabilise the cost of living by tackling the root causes of inflation- not only through subsidies, but by increasing supply chain efficiency and accountability. 'The repository system is not just a database. It is a tool to break the monopoly of information held by certain parties who manipulate prices for profit,' he said. Enforcement under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Competition Act 2010 will also be strengthened using the data from the repository, which is expected to help uncover price-fixing activities, stock hoarding, and artificial shortages. Armizan emphasised that the initiative reflects the Madani Government's commitment to protecting consumers while creating s healthier market environment that encourages genuine competition. Prime Minister praises Hajiji's Blue Economy initiative

'For the past two years, especially last year, Hajiji repeatedly mentioned the Blue Economy to me,' Anwar said at the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day closing ceremony at Sabah International Convention Centre, Sunday. 'I know about the Blue Economy, but I see that Sabah is so committed and we have embraced this thinking and found ways to collaborate between the Federal and State governments because this creates strength,' he said, praising Hajiji's forward-thinking leadership in championing sustainable economic development. The Blue Economy concept encompasses various sectors including fisheries, agriculture, solar energy and green energy from sea, land and air. Anwar credited Hajiji for driving this transformative approach which has now gained national recognition and adoption. He also pointed out the importance of unity and cooperation between Federal and State for Malaysia's progress. 'To make our country successful, let us work together. If we want to elevate dignity, for the sake of Sabah and all of Malaysia's states, let us cooperate, give way and jointly raise our country's interests,' he said. Anwar also spoke about how this collaborative approach has already yielded results in agricultural production and pointed out Malaysia's unexpected success in producing onions, chili and most recently, avocados that were previously heavily imported. 'Who would have thought that Malaysia, through Sabah's fertile land and State Government cooperation, could produce avocados, a fruit that attracts attention and has high demand and now the results are effective,' he said. He noted that Malaysia's import bill for agricultural products had reached over RM50 billion, making domestic production initiatives even more important for the nation's food security and economic stability. 'The success in producing previously imported crops demonstrates what can be achieved through focused cooperation between various agencies including Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, the Department of Agriculture and Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority,' he said. He said the current Federal Government operates under strict principles of service rather than exploitation. 'The current Federal Government leadership has set conditions whereby we cannot take interests, whether land, timber or shares from the states. We come to serve the states. There are no conflicts between the Federal and State governments,' he said. He also noted that farmers, breeders and fishermen form the core majority of Malaysia's population and require a peaceful nation, stable government and complete cooperation between federal and state levels. 'States cannot work separately. The Federal government cannot work separately. The better our cooperation, the better it is for the people.' He expressed confidence that the Blue Economy approach, born from Sabah's initiative but now adopted nationally, will serve as a model for sustainable development across Malaysia. Agriculture must embrace tech to remain competitive, says Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU: Farmers, breeders and fishermen in Sabah must be open to change and ready to adopt modern technology and smart farm management practices to remain competitive in the evolving agro-food sector. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said this at the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders, and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Sunday (Aug 3). 'The future of this sector depends on the community's ability to innovate and adapt to the new landscape of modern agriculture,' he said. Hajiji said that agriculture was the third-largest contributor to Sabah's economy, contributing RM12.2bil, or 14.5% to the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the closing ceremony of HPPNK 2025. It was also attended by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, as well as other federal and state leaders.
