UK's oldest velodrome recovers after closure

Yahoo29-06-2025
It might be a wonky shape, outdoors and made of tarmac but a velodrome in East Sussex is the oldest in the UK, according to British Cycling.
Preston Park Velodrome in Brighton was dug out by hand by the British Army and opened for competition in 1877.
But competitive racing stopped in 2014 after the track was declared unsafe, resuming two years later after safety improvements.
Anthony Rogers, cyclist and author, said the track was "both unusual and unique".
The velodrome in Brighton is one of just a few to not be oval-shaped, instead comprising of the rather unusual four straights and two slightly banked corners.
Mr Rogers said: "Unlike velodromes we see in the Olympics, this one has almost no banking.
"It is flat all the way around.
"As tracks go it is pretty rough. It is tarmac and outdoors.
"Most tracks are now built indoors with 250m of Siberian pine."
As well as being the oldest track in the country, Preston Park claims to also be the longest, at 579m (1900 ft).
Mr Rogers said: "It is the only track in the country where you go uphill along the back straight and then downhill.
"People who come here to compete from other parts of the country are quite taken aback and can't believe it's still here in this form."
Between 3,000 and 5,000 spectators were a regular occurrence up until the mid-1950s.
Mr Rogers said: "In its heyday there would probably be big crowds here, probably bigger than to watch nearby Brighton & Hove Albion."
The velodrome boasts a cricket pitch on the grass in its centre.
It is tucked away beneath Victorian flint walls.
Mr Rogers said: "One of the beauties of it is that it is hidden.
"It's a pleasant place to picnic, to relax and to ride."

🎥 Liverpool new boy lifts the lid on his bizarre pre-season moment

Liverpool have taken the summer transfer market by storm in the wake of capturing Premier League honours in 2024/25, with many fans and pundits expecting the Reds to top the table once again in 2025/26. Arne Slot has watched the club brass open the cheque book in impressive fashion in recent weeks, with the Anfield side adding Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Ármin Pécsi, and Milos Kerkez to the senior ranks on the red half of Merseyside. Kerkez, 21, has already endeared himself to supporters as he settles to live with the champions since arriving from Bournemouth in a £40m deal, and has impressed in training as well as during the club's 3-1 pre-season win over Preston on 13 July. Speaking with the club's media, Kerkez jokingly expressed his desire to fight for the shirt and what it means to play for the English giants when quizzed on his bizarre attempt at a tackle against Preston North End. With many fans anticipating the possibility of the Hungarian international usurping the starting left-back role from Andy Robertson, current evidence suggests that he may not be too far off from doing just that. 📸 Matt McNulty - 2025 Getty Images

'I was always going to go with my gut'

Coventry City goalkeeper Carl Rushworth says it was a gut decision to join the Sky Blues after speaking with boss Frank Lampard and midfielder Matt Grimes. Rushworth, who joined Coventry on loan from Brighton on Thursday, previously played with Grimes during their time together at Swansea City during the 2023-24 season. "[Lampard] is putting all the ownership into my hands," Rushworth told BBC Radio CWR. "It's not like he would like me to play out, he's not saying we are stuck in those ways. He believes in me to play what I see and I have the backing from him. "Along with speaking with [Matt] Grimesy and having a non-biased opinion about how much he was loving this club and loving his time here. I was always going to go with my gut." It's not just talk that drew Rushworth's attention, it's also the possibility of adding a promotion to his CV with usual Sky Blues number one Oliver Dovin likely to be ruled out for the start of the season. "The plan is just to compete and try and play as many games as possible and look to get promoted," the keeper added. "That's something that is very exciting for me to think about and it's actually very realistic as well." Listen to the full interview with Carl Rushworth and more on BBC Sounds.

Arteta delivers latest injury update on 2 Arsenal stars

Mikel Arteta has eased concerns over the fitness of Gabriel and Jurrien Timber, confirming both defenders are close to returning but will not be rushed back. Photo byNeither player featured in the midweek win over AC Milan or in Friday's open training session at the Singapore National Stadium, with Timber's absence anticipated as he continues rehabilitation from ankle surgery. Gabriel's omission, however, drew attention after he had already featured for 45 minutes against Watford earlier in pre-season. 'Gabi got a little niggle in training and we didn't want to take any risk,' Arteta said. 'Hopefully in the next week or so he's going to be able to train and play again. 'And with Jurrien, he's getting very close. He's almost hit every point that we needed after the surgery and the period of rehab that he needed. And I think in the next few days he's going to start doing it again.' Photo byArteta had already explained the approach after the Milan game, noting the need to manage players' workloads amid travel and climate changes on tour. 'Gabi had a little niggle the other day in training, and because of the fact that he's been out for so long as well, we have to manage him. 'I mean, we've been in Spain, different pitch, different conditions, go to the UK, different ones, come here, and there are a lot of changes, so we have to minimise the risk with him.' Despite being set to miss Sunday's fixture against Newcastle United, Gabriel has been described by Arteta as 'in good shape', while Timber is expected to return to full training shortly, with both players on track to be available ahead of the competitive season.
