The 5 Best Resorts in Indonesia of 2025

Travel + Leisure12 hours ago
Indonesia may comprise more than 17,000 islands, but when it comes to resorts in this massive Southeast Asian nation, T+L readers far and away love those on Bali the most. It makes sense, when you think about the beauty and variety of things to do across the island's 2,230 square miles. From the temple in Uluwatu perched high above the sea to the tranquil yoga retreats tucked away in the jungles of Ubud, Bali is an ideal escape for both wellness seekers and those looking for something more adventurous. The same can be said about its luxury resorts, which offer myriad experiences you won't find anywhere else. Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe—to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 180,000 T+L readers completed the 2025 survey. A total of more than 657,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.). Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below: Rooms/facilities Location Service Food Value For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

In the southern resort region of Nusa Dua, The Mulia once again earned the runner-up spot on this year's list, and readers raved about the food: 'The restaurants are exceptional, especially the Sunday Brunch at Soleil—it was a highlight of our trip.' They also loved the family-friendly offerings: 'Our kids loved playing in their kids pool, kids club, and at the beach. It was the perfect place for a family vacation in Bali.'
The Mulia's neighbor in Nusa Dua, The St. Regis Bali Resort, secured the No. 5 spot this year, thanks to an 'absolutely wonderful team. From the airport greeter to the drive out to the resort, everyone is exceptional! They recall your name, your preferences and are genuine in their effort to see that you have a great experience while enjoying the resort.' Rounding out the list is The Ritz-Carlton, Bali (No. 3), also in Nusa Dua, and the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay (No. 4). Aside from the Four Seasons' amenities like the Sundara Beach Club and the Healing Village Spa, it offers adventure-focused experiences for guests like helicopter tours, fishing expeditions, and surfing lessons.

'Feels like heaven.' That's how one reader described this year's winner, which occupies a large swath of verdant jungle along the Ayung River in Ubud. 'It's completely immersed in nature, and wellness is at its core,' added the reader. The resort is made up of 35 suites and 25 pool villas, the latter named for the private swimming pool that comes with each one. But even entry-level suites here are enormous by most resort standards, clocking in at 1,076 square feet with views of the rain forest or rice paddies. Service was also a major draw, as one guest noted: 'The entire staff is top notch, extremely respectful and friendly.' As for the food? 'The restaurants are without exception outstanding. The set menu at Kubu [Madapa's fine-dining venue] is highly recommended.'
The entire staff is top notch, extremely respectful and friendly.

NYC snubbed in new ranking of the best cities in the US

We're not king of the hill — or top of the heap. In a popular new ranking of the so-called greatest cities in the country, New York failed to crack the top five — losing out to a string of obviously lesser locales. The snub came courtesy of Travel + Leisure's 2025 World's Best Awards survey, which annually asks its well-heeled — and well-traveled — readers to weigh in on their favorites in multiple categories. Advertisement 5 The Big Apple didn't make the grade in a brand-new ranking of the best cities in the United States. Getty Images This year, the 180,000 voters seemed to strongly favor smaller cities — elevating little Santa Fe, New Mexico to first place in the metropolitan marathon with a score of 88.8 out of 100, edging out 12-time blue ribbon winner Charleston, SC. Urban hubs were rated on several criteria — sights/landmarks, culture, food, friendliness, shopping and value. Advertisement For each category, respondents were asked to provide a rating of poor to excellent. Travel + Leisure then calculated the average of the reader responses and gave each city a total score out of 100. Readers dubbed New Mexico's capital city a 'true gem of a place,' praising its inventive cuisine, natural beauty — the metropolis sits at 7,000 feet above sea level at the foothills of the Sangre De Cristo mountain range — as well as its markets and art galleries. Clocking in second was New Orleans, Louisiana (87.06), with readers honing in on the Big Easy's kaleidoscopic culinary scene. 5 Santa Fe, New Mexico was praised for its inventive cuisine and scenic vistas. SeanPavonePhoto – Advertisement Defending champ Charleston, South Carolina dropped two rungs to third place with a score of 87.01. Readers focused on the city's downtown, which retains its period charm, as well as the gorgeous architecture. 'Charleston's laws of keeping every building under the height of its tallest church, keeps the city unique, quaint and charming,' fawned one. 5 An aerial view of Charleston, South Carolina, which was dethroned after 12 years at the top of the rankings. Kevin Ruck – In fact, T+L readers seemed to be overwhelmingly Southern charmed by cities sitting below the Mason-Dixon line. Rounding out the top five list were Savannah, Georgia (86.64) and the nation's capital-adjacent burg of Alexandria, Virginia (85.26). Meanwhile, for the second year in a row, New York City — home of the most billionaires in the world and TripAdvisor's number one destination for 2025 — managed an embarrassing 8th place in the rankings, with a score of 83.84. 5 Savannah, Georgia, is one of the top 5 cities in the US in 2025, according to Travel + Leisure. Jacob – It notably trailed Greenville, South Carolina, a sleepy Upstate town that has enjoyed a surge of development in recent years. Readers specifically praised NYC's theater scene, with one respondent gushing, 'can't be beat for quality and variety — even the theaters themselves are beautiful.' A New City Just Won Top U.S. Destination for the First Time — Ending a 12-Year Streak for a Southern Favorite

Travel + Leisure just revealed the winners of its 2025 World's Best Awards A new city topped the outlet's list of best U.S. destinations, ending a 12-year run for the previous champ Charleston, S.C. had held the title since 2013For the first time in 12 years, a new U.S. city has been crowned the best domestic destination by Travel + Leisure Tuesday, July 8, T+L released its annual World's Best Awards. In a remarkable upheaval, Santa Fe, N.M. tops the list of best U.S. cities, ousting Charleston, S.C., which had held the title since 2013. The coastal city not only lost the top spot, it dropped to fourth place. Known for its vibrant art scene, outdoor recreation and more than 300 days of sunshine each year, Santa Fe, was described by one reader is 'a true gem of a place in America.' 'Every trip exceeds the last, with so many new things to discover,' another repeat visitor told the outlet, adding, 'Santa Fe offers a multi-layer experience.' T+L readers 'raved' about the inventive New Mexican cuisine and the city's natural beauty. Urban markets and galleries combine with the rolling foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges to make for a perfect getaway. Celebrities are also fans of this Southwest culture capital. The late Val Kilmer spent decades living in Santa Fe, as did Gene Hackman. Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin also has deep roots in the community. In 2013, he pledged his own money to rejuvenate the local and historic Jean Cocteau Cinema. Each year, T+L sends a survey out to readers through the magazine, tablet editions, newsletters, social media and that asks respondents to rate nominees in each category based on certain characteristics. For cities, readers were asked to rate sights/landmarks, culture, food, friendliness, shopping and value. Final scores are averages of these responses. While Santa Fe has had a spot in T+L's top 10 list for the past 20 years, this is its first time it has claimed No. 1. Overall, readers were big fans of cities in the Southeast and Southwest, with only one city in the Northeast and one in the Midwest rounding out the top 10. Santa Fe, N.M. New Orleans, La. Charleston, S.C. Savannah, Ga. Alexandria, Va. Honolulu, Hawaii Greenville, S.C. New York, N.Y. Asheville, N.C. Chicago, Ill. Santa Fe was also the only U.S. city to make T+L's list of top 25 cities in the world, coming in at No. 19. At the top spot, a 10-time honoree, is San Miguel de Allende, Mexico followed by Chiang Mai, Thailand and Tokyo, Japan. For vacationers looking for an island getaway, Páros, Greece takes the top spot for best island. According to Forbes, big names like Tom Hanks, Matthew McConaughey and Jeff Bezos are frequent visitors. In the U.S., the top island goes to Mount Desert Island, Maine — a protected part of Acadia National Park. 'This year's results reflect a travel landscape in motion,' Travel + Leisure's editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford said in a press release. 'From a high-desert city in the American Southwest to a quiet Greek island, our readers are seeking depth, character, and a strong sense of place. We're thrilled to honor the hotels, destinations, and travel companies that are delivering those transformative experiences.'
