Beyond Ego: Why Future Demands An Ecocentric Worldview

Beyond Ego: Why Future Demands An Ecocentric Worldview

Time of India3 days ago

Rene Descartes, one of the foremost rationalists, famously proclaimed 'Dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum,' which means 'i doubt, therefore i think, therefore i am.' Ethically speaking, besides pointing to importance of critical thinking, which is fundamental to existence, the phrase carries weight of 'i', the self: i doubt-i think-i am, intensely focusing on 'i', representative of ego.
Self-centredness reflects a lack of ability to understand different perspectives on the same truth, an inherent cognitive bias towards the self to exclude all others, and a lack of empathy. This self-serving approach is egocentric, where 'i' wants to manipulate the world, modifying its environment at the cost other beings for whom the Earth is a shared home.
An egocentric approach considers existence self-serving. It does not accept the
environmental crises
and treats rivers, lakes, forests, and mountains merely as resources to be exploited for ego's aggrandisement. This attitude must be transcended to save the planet.
Transcendence of ego comes from expanding the sense of self to include rest of the world – species on the brink of extinction, polluted rivers, plastic-filled oceans and toxic air. It requires a
paradigm shift
– from being egocentric to becoming ecocentric. With being and becoming a constant exercise in inclusion resulting in expansion of self that ultimately leads to realisation of the Self.

Krishn
says in the
Bhagwad Gita
: 'Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, reason, and also ego; these constitute My nature divided into eight parts. This, indeed, is my material nature. Other than this, by which the whole universe is sustained, know it to be My higher nature in the form of Jiva.'
Everything that we see or feel, in a way, is Krishn. There is no duality. Krishn and nature are not separate; they are one. Krishn is both within existence and outside of it, but he is not limited to it, because he is representative of the Supreme Self. He says in Gita: 'There is nothing else besides Me, Arjun. Like clusters of yarn-beads formed by knots on a thread, all this is threaded on me.' Krishn challenges Arjun's egocentricity by enabling him to see beyond the self and fulfil his dharm. In the 21st century, our dharm is to become eco-centric, that is, to acknowledge and value all living beings, not just by how useful they are to us.
Buddhists believe in
dependent origination
, that is, nothing exists without causes or conditions that enable its existence. All phenomena are interdependent, and realising this is shunyata, emptiness. Our existence is relative to causes and conditions and dependent on many other factors beyond our control.
Even an empty bottle, which we toss nonchalantly in the bin, carries unseen labour of hundreds of people who worked to ensure it reached us. These things may not occur to us when we discard bottles, clothes, gadgets, utensils, and other things and reach out for new ones. An egocentric model will not sustain us; we need an ecocentric model for a brighter tomorrow that nourishes our being and the environment.

Nagpur: The Maharashtra school education department is set to begin the First-Year Junior College (FYJC) admission process under CAP Round 1 from July 1, with nearly 33% of seats allotted in Vidarbha—marginally higher than the state average of around 30%. Students will have about a week to complete the admission formalities. For the first time in Maharashtra, Class 11 admissions are being conducted on the same online platform where the merit list was declared, which was released on Saturday. In the Vidarbha region comprising Nagpur and Amravati divisions, 1,32,708 seats have been allotted out of 4,08,490 available, reflecting an allotment rate of 32.5%. This indicates that nearly two-thirds of the seats remain open for future rounds, offering students greater flexibility and choice in the upcoming stages. Among the three academic streams, science emerged as the most preferred option. Of the 1,85,275 science seats available in Vidarbha, 75,445 were allotted, showing a fill rate of 40.7%. The arts stream followed with 44,348 allotments from 1,61,435 seats, resulting in a 27.5% fill rate. Commerce remained the least sought-after stream, with only 12,915 of 61,780 seats allotted—a low fill rate of just 20.9%. Decade-Old Parking Projects Still Stalled At New Friends Colony, Jangpura

New Delhi: Seventeen years after the proposal was placed, work on multilevel parking facilities at New Friends Colony and Jangpura still remains incomplete. The facilities, envisioned to ease traffic congestion in the nearby areas, were proposed in 2008 and allotted to a contractor before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. While the facility at New Friends Colony is partially functional, the Jangpura unit is yet to become operational. At the New Friends Colony facility, which was meant to house over 405 vehicles, only two of the three basements are operational, reducing its capacity to around 350. The third basement remains unusable due to perpetual waterlogging caused by high groundwater levels and an active aquifer. "We come around 1 pm daily to collect and drain the water through a pipe," said Bhagwan Prasad Meena, MCD's pump operator. To manage the collected water, MCD has dug a pit nearby, intended for use in watering plants. However, with the monsoon fast approaching, this temporary fix is becoming useless, as the pit could overflow with rainwater before the system is fully in place. Exits at the facility are either broken or left unlocked, and the staircase to the third basement is completely unlit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo Children playing in the adjacent playground often venture down to retrieve balls. "This is the only playground close to our house," they said when asked why they risked entering the dark and unsafe space. Meanwhile, the Jangpura parking lot, designed for over 300 vehicles, has been closed for more than two years. No construction activity is underway at the three-storey parking facility. "The parking lot has been shut…with no work happening at all. The colony residents are forced to park in front of our shops, causing daily inconvenience," said Mohammad Shoaib, vice-president of the traders' association at Guru Nanak Market, Jangpura. With no designated parking, residents and tenants park haphazardly around the closed facility, exceeding the saturation point. Amit Kaushik, general secretary of Jangpura RWA, blamed the delay on a payment dispute. "The construction has been stalled due to the strife between MCD and the contractor… With the new standing committee chairperson elected, we hope a fresh tender will be issued to complete the work." He also cited a Delhi High Court order dated Nov 11, 2023, which directed MCD to "take appropriate measures to ensure construction and completion within a period of six months from today." An MCD official said, "With the new standing committee in place, we expect a fresh approach within the next 10 days. The pending work at these parking lots will be addressed through the private public partnership method."

Bhagya Nagar Sri Mahankali Bonala Utsavala Ummadi Devalayala Uregimpu Committee offers special Bangaru Bonam to Goddess Kanaka Durga

Vijayawada: The Bhagya Nagar Sri Mahankali Bonala Utsavala Ummadi Devalayala Uregimpu Committee offered a special Bangaru Bonam (Gold Bonam) to Goddess Kanaka Durga on Sunday, continuing their tradition for the 16th consecutive year. The sacred offering was made at the hill shrine on Indrakeeladri, symbolising the strong cultural bond between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Committee members began the day by performing special pujas and preparing the Bonam at Jammi Dhoddi Choultry at the foot of the hill. A colourful procession followed, showcasing five traditional Telangana folk art forms, including Pothuraju dance, Garaga Nruthyam, Bethala dance, and others. Women devotees carrying Bonam pots on their heads danced with devotion, while also performing Ganga Puja at the Krishna River near Durga Ghat. The procession was welcomed at the temple by endowments minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy and Executive Officer Seena Nayak, who formally received the Bonam on behalf of the temple. Gopishetty Raghavender, President of the Bonala Committee, said, "Though we belong to different states now, our devotion is united. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เทรดทองCFDs กับโบรกเกอร์ที่เชื่อถือได้ | เรียนรู้เพิ่มเติม IC Markets สมัคร Undo We see Kanaka Durga as Mahankali's sister and have brought this special Gold Bonam as a token of our love. " Massive devotee turnout on Sunday Being a weekend and part of the Ashadha month, thousands of devotees from both Telugu states gathered at the Durga temple to offer their Saare (ritual offerings). Temple EO Seena Nayak personally monitored the situation to manage the crowd. With increasing rush, the ₹500 special darshan was cancelled, and arrangements were made for quicker darshan for general devotees. Alternate queue lines and designated routes were set up for Saare Samarpana teams, who were also offered free prasadam and blessings on the 6th floor of Maha Mandapam. Many devotees also took part in spiritual rituals like Suryopasana, Chandi Homam, and Laksha Kumkumarchana.
