Police make 10 arrests over phone shop robberies

Yahoo3 days ago

Ten people have been arrested as part of a police investigation into a string of robberies at phone shops.
Detectives have been trying to identify an organised crime gang believed to be behind 13 robberies in London and across the south and east of England.
Eight men, aged between 20 and 31, and two 17-year-old boys were arrested at addresses in London and later charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and remanded in custody, the said.
Staff at the shops were said to have been threatened by individuals who "often had their faces covered and were sometimes armed with weapons", police added.
The robberies happened between February and early June and were part of a "concerted effort to steal phones and sell them overseas", detectives said.
Thousands of pounds worth of new phones were taken from secure rooms at stores in what police described as "similar incidents".
Police said the robberies were reported at shops in Staines, Ilford, Hackney, Huntingdon, Orpington, East Grinstead, Alton, Clacton-on-Sea, Horsham, St Alban's, Ipswich, Stamford and Eastleigh.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Hillier said: "Phone robbery has boomed globally, and London is not immune.
"There is a concerted effort by criminal gangs to steal phones and sell them overseas as part of a multi-million-pound industry.
"The Met is catching more of these criminals and operations such as this are vital to disrupting offenders who cause fear and misery to shop workers and communities."

Massive cocaine haul valued at £100m seized at UK port

Border Force officers have seized 2.4 tonnes of cocaine with a value of almost £100 million in one of the biggest drugs busts in years. The enormous haul was found under containers on a ship arriving into London Gateway port from Panama, the Home Office said. Specialist officers detected the shipment earlier this month after carrying out an intelligence-led operation. With help from the port operator, they moved 37 large containers to get at the stash. Worth an estimated £96 million, it marks the sixth-largest cocaine seizure since records began. Minister for migration and citizenship Seema Malhotra said: 'Drugs gangs trying to import illegal substances into the UK are a blight on society and we will leave no stone left unturned in our pursuit of organised crime gangs inflicting addiction, misery and death upon Britain's communities. 'Well done to Border Force Maritime officers on a hugely successful operation, which has struck a major blow against the criminals threatening our country.' Cocaine-related deaths in England and Wales rose by 31% between 2022 and 2023, the Home Office said. Border Force Maritime director Charlie Eastaugh said: 'This seizure – one of the largest of its kind – is just one example of how dedicated Border Force maritime officers remain one step ahead of the criminal gangs who threaten our security. 'Our message to these criminals is clear – more than ever before, we are using intelligence and international law enforcement co-operation to disrupt and dismantle your operations.'

Gresham man stabbed 86-year-old in Fred Meyer parking lot before trying to steal Porsche

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Gresham man was sentenced to more than six years in prison on Friday after he stabbed an elderly man three times before trying to steal his Porsche in Dec. 2024. Jesus Ascenio-Molina, 31, pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery and second-degree assault. On Dec. 27, 2024, Ascenio-Molina came up to the 86-year-old man while he was loading groceries into his car at a Fred Meyer on 82nd Ave. '(Ascenio-Molina) told the man he admired the man's car, a 2011 Porsche Panamera, and twice asked for the keys. When the victim refused, (he) stabbed him twice in the back and once in the right ribcage,' the Clackamas County DA's Office said. Ascenio-Molina fled to a nearby apartment complex, but he was arrested two hours later. 'I'm happy seeing this guy off the street,' the victim said prior to the sentencing. Ascenio-Molina apologized to the victim in court and said that he 'wasn't thinking straight.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
