Oklahoma's Jase Summy wins Western Amateur in record fashion, earns likely Walker Cup spot
There wasn't much doubt before the Western Amateur, but Jase Summy made sure he's going to be on the U.S. Walker Cup team next month at Cypress Point in California. Summy, a rising senior at Oklahoma, won a Bedlam final Saturday at Skokie Country Club outside of Chicago, topping Oklahoma State rising junior Ethan Fang 6-and-5 to win the Western Amateur. Summy, ranked ninth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, took down the world's third-ranked amateur, who earlier this summer won the British Amateur and is already on the Walker Cup team. While the win didn't officially give Summy a spot on the team, he's a shoo-in to be selected after the conclusion of the U.S. Amateur, which begins Monday, Aug. 11 at Olympic Club in San Francisco. 'This is the biggest win of my life – by far,' Summy said. 'I knew my game was there, but I hadn't quite broken through. Today, I did.' 'That was definitely the biggest crowd I've played in front of. My game had been trending well. It was just about execution. I felt confident coming in, and that carried through the week.' Summy's win was the largest margin of victory in the history of the championship, and he also earned an exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour's 2026 NV5 Invitational. He won the second and third holes, and while Fang won the sixth to get back to 1 down, Summy dominated from there. He won Nos. 8-10 and then 12-13 to close out the match. Summy became the first Sooner to win the Western Amateur since Charlie Coe in 1950. And now, Summy turns his attention to the U.S. Amateur, with an all-but-likely invitation to the Walker Cup team waiting come the conclusion of the biggest amateur event in the world.

Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took over the NBA in the 2024-25 season. He led the league in scoring, took home the MVP, Western Conference finals MVP, and finals MVP awards, led the Thunder to their first championship in franchise history, and announced himself as the clear best player in the league. Gilgeous-Alexander has thrown the Thunder on his back and has taken the league by storm at this stage of his career. He deserves a lot of credit for being able to lead OKC to the mountaintop as he delivered a big performance on the game's biggest stage. Philadelphia 76ers legend Allen Iverson delivered his own statement on Gilgeous-Alexander as he continues to praise the talent coming into the league: You have to practice to become whatever you're trying to become in life. You think Shai didn't practice? Become the MVP, the best player in the world? You have to practice. Iverson was able to win the MVP award in 2001 and lead the Sixers to the finals before they fell to the Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal led Los Angeles Lakers. He was an elite scorer during his time and has his number retired at the Wells Fargo Center. The Thunder are likely to do the same when the time comes for Gilgeous-Alexander.
