His first major TV role was in the short-lived CBS sitcom "Annie McGuire" (1988)
starring Mary Tyler Moore in the title role. She and Mr. Arndt played newlyweds trying to balance their careers and form a blended family with their children from previous marriages.

Mr. Arndt went on to have a long collaboration with TV writer-producer David E. Kelley on shows including 'L.A. Law.' Mr. Arndt played the lawyer Jack Sollers, an aggressive courtroom practitioner with a deeply sympathetic personal side, in 11 episodes in 1990 and 1991.
He later worked with Kelley on 'Picket Fences,' in which he played another lawyer, as well as
'The Practice,' 'Ally McBeal,' 'Boston Legal,' and the medical drama 'Chicago Hope.'

Mr. Arndt gave his most notable film performance in the thriller 'Basic Instinct' (1992) as one of the police officers who become distracted as they interrogate a murder suspect played with erotic charge by Sharon Stone.
But Mr. Arndt was always most at home in the theater and moved into TV in large part to support his family, his wife said.
He took to the stage again when he was cast opposite Mary-Louise Parker in 'Heisenberg,' a two-hander by playwright Simon Stephens, in 2015. The actor first selected to play the male lead had bowed out, and Mr. Arndt stepped in days before rehearsals began.
'Heisenberg' centers on the unconventional romance between Mr. Arndt's character, an aging Irish butcher named Alex Priest, and Parker's much younger Georgie. The two characters are strangers when Georgie kisses Alex on the neck in a London train station.
After opening at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 2015, the show moved to the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in New York, where, at 77, Mr. Arndt made his Broadway debut.
His performance 'has to be the most unlikely and irresistible Broadway debut of the year,' theater critic Ben Brantley wrote in The New York Times. 'He lends roiling, at first barely detectable energy to the seeming passivity of a man who, on occasion, finds himself crying for reasons he cannot (nor wants to) explain. But this ostensibly confirmed celibate oozes a gentle, undeniable sensuality. He never lets Alex be overwhelmed by Georgie's relentless, full-frontal attacks.'
Mr. Arndt's performance brought him a 2017 Tony nomination for best actor in a play. The award ultimately went to Kevin Kline for the Noël Coward comedy 'Present Laughter.'

'I've lived several lives,' Mr. Arndt told the publication Broadway World, 'and I'm one of the lucky ones who got back to what I was supposed to be doing.'
Denis LeRoy Arndt — his first name was pronounced 'de-KNEE,' as in the French, but he also answered to 'Denny' — was born in Clyde, Ohio, on Feb. 23, 1939. His mother was a seamstress who made curtains, and his father was a railroad worker.
The family, which included two daughters, moved frequently before settling in Spokane, Wash. He credited a drama teacher with sparking his interest in the arts.
Mr. Arndt told the Daily Beast that he "came from a socioeconomic background that meant the military was an opportunity." Shortly after his high school graduation
in 1957, he joined the Army. He served for roughly a decade as a helicopter pilot and received two awards of the Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam, according to his family.
He later flew commercial helicopters in Alaska before settling in Seattle, where, on the suggestion of a friend, he tried out for a part in a local theater company. When he returned to the stage after years flying helicopters, he once remarked to the Los Angeles Times, it was 'as though a circle had been closed.'
Mr. Arndt became a regular with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, among other companies.
Mr. Arndt's marriage to Marjorie Arveson ended in divorce. Besides his wife, he leaves four children from his first marriage, Scott Arndt, Tammy Arndt, Laurie Arndt, and Kirsten Arndt; three children from his second marriage, Bryce Brooks, McKenna Rowe, and Tanner Arndt; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

‘Shari & Lamb Chop' Trailer: The True Story Behind Shari Lewis and Her Beloved Sock Puppet
Iconic ventriloquist and puppeteer Shari Lewis gets a documentary ode to her trailblazing career as a children's entertainer in 'Shari & Lamb Chop.' The new documentary, from 'Love, Gilda' director and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Lisa D'Apolito, takes an up-close and personal look at her life and career starting with the CBS television series 'Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts' in the early 1950s, through 'The Shari Lewis Show' and 'The Charlie Horse Music Pizza,' with her second husband Jeremy Tarcher. Kino Lorber releases the documentary in theaters on July 18, with digital, educational, and home video releases to follow. Watch the trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, for 'Shari & Lamb Chop' below. More from IndieWire Brad Pitt Says David Fincher 'Reinvigorated' His Love of Acting During 'Se7en' James Cameron Expects 'Ghosts of Hiroshima' to Be His Lowest Grossing Film Ever Here's the official synopsis: 'Before Fred Rogers and Jim Henson, there was Shari Lewis, a children's television pioneer whose whimsical characters and ebullient spirit have guided generations of children as they came of age. Raised in the Bronx by a proud feminist mother and a professor father who moonlighted as Peter Pan the Magic Man, Shari became a multitalented dancer, singer, and magician. But when an injury sidelined her dance aspirations, she channeled her creativity into a passion for ventriloquism, creating the now beloved sock puppet characters Charlie Horse, Hush Puppy and, of course, Lamb Chop. 'From her early years of TV success to the crush of her show's cancellation to her 1990s comeback in her 60s, Lisa D'Apolito's heartfelt doc charts the life, loves, and career hits and misses of the spunky perfectionist whose talent and perseverance stand as a testament to women's power and forever changed the landscape of children's entertainment. Featuring interviews with ventriloquists inspired by Lewis alongside nostalgia-rich clips and home movies, this vibrant portrait brims with the same warmth, wit, and magic that defined her, celebrating the power of imagination and the inner child within.' Said D'Apolito, 'Shari Lewis's life is the ultimate comeback story. Shari mesmerized and empowered generations of children and their family in believing in themselves and having fun doing it. Audiences for the film have been multi-generational and have laughed and cried together and fallen in love with Shari and Lamb Chop. I hope it is a film that you can go with your grandparent, parents and your children and whether you watched Shari on TV or not, it brings the magic of childhood.' Said Mallory Lewis, Shari's daughter, 'I could not be happier that the world is finally going to get to truly know my mother's story and for the first time meet the fascinating and complex woman, the wife, the mother, the producer, that was Shari Lewis! They will not be disappointed.' The film is produced by White Horse Pictures and MoJo Global Arts and presented by Concord Originals and Olive Hill Media in association with The 51 Fund, Carlene Laughlin, and Chicago Media Project. The film first premiered at DOC NYC. The documentary is produced with the full cooperation of the Shari Lewis estate, through her daughter Mallory, who shares in her mother's legacy performing with Lamb Chop regularly across the U.S. Best of IndieWire Guillermo del Toro's Favorite Movies: 56 Films the Director Wants You to See 'Song of the South': 14 Things to Know About Disney's Most Controversial Movie Nicolas Winding Refn's Favorite Films: 37 Movies the Director Wants You to See Solve the daily Crossword

2025 Emmys Predictions: Outstanding Comedy Series
We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2025 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 12 to June 23, with the official Emmy nominations announced Tuesday, July 15. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 18 and ends the night of August 27. The 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 14, and air live on CBS at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT. The State of the Race The Outstanding Comedy Series nominations have been the most consistent among the main series categories, so it feels really easy to say that 'Abbott Elementary,' 'The Bear,' 'Hacks,' and 'Only Murders in the Building' are all set for their third or fourth nominations in the category. 'What We Do in the Shadows' also feels like a safe prediction, even though it was not nominated every season it was on, because it made the cut last year, and is in its last eligible year. More from IndieWire Everything to Remember from 'Squid Game' Season 1 and 2 'Matlock' Production Designer Adam Rowe on How Two Canceled Shows Gave the CBS Hit Its Scale In terms of new contenders, Netflix has uncharacteristically entered this season with the most comedies, which could be seen as a good thing or a bad thing for the streaming service. The consensus is that romantic comedy 'Nobody Wants This' is a shoo-in for a nomination, as it has had a long runway of campaigning that includes some winter TV award wins, but it has been harder to parse whether voters preferred 'The Four Season' over 'The Residence,' or 'A Man on the Inside' over 'Running Point.' All the shows have run strong campaigns, to the point where an Emmy voter would have a different answer on which ones they're voting for any given day. Apple TV+ has been more succinct. 'The Studio' is its big new comedy, and although people have questions about who the show is for outside of people who work in Hollywood, the Emmys are importantly voted on by people who work in Hollywood. 'Shrinking' also stands out as a strong candidate for a nomination, even though it did not receive one for Season 1, because it is one of the series that has leaned heavily into being shot in Los Angeles, even having voters come visit the set as part of its official For Your Consideration event. The devastating wildfires in January have really put that element into focus, as the influential Television Academy members that are going to all these shows' FYC events are largely LA-based creatives that want to keep more work inside the city. Surprisingly, the big wild cards in the comedy race are HBO series. While 'Hacks' has helped the develop the identity of HBO Max as this hub for broader shows with an edge that comes from not having to worry about standards and practices as much, HBO proper has seen its comedies get darker and weirder in the past couple years. Ultimately, that has led to continued critical success, but on the Emmys front, voters have not been as welcoming to 'The Righteous Gemstones' or 'The Rehearsal,' which is a shame, because they are two contenders that have made their audiences laugh the hardest. With this being the last season for 'The Righteous Gemstones,' and 'The Rehearsal' becoming a bigger hit that does not have to deal with comparisons to 'Jury Duty' this time around, there is a glimmer of hope that the Emmys will embrace both shows this year, or the small but adored 'Somebody Somewhere.' After all, this is the network that absolutely dominated this category with 'Veep' less than a decade ago. Prince Harry and Meghan Farce That Had Oprah in Stitches: 'Funniest Thing'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Oprah Winfrey recalled the frantic scene as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attempted to rehome a family of ducks in their pond, offering a rare glimpse into their A-list Southern California community. The talk show queen is neighbors with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in Montecito, and the trio are still friends years after Oprah provided the stage for their most explosive interview ever. In a less controversial moment that was still dramatic in a light-hearted way, Harry and Meghan were left running around their estate trying to catch their feathered friends. Oprah Winfrey interviewing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in March 2021. Oprah Winfrey interviewing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in March 2021. Joe Pugliese/Harpo Why It Matters Oprah is predominantly linked to the Sussexes in the public imagination due to the high drama of her March 2021 CBS interview with them, complete with allegations that a racialized comment was made about the couple's unborn child by a royal they did not name. Rarely, though, has she discussed the interview itself in the years that followed, despite major high-profile debates about what Harry and Meghan told her. It is interesting, therefore, to hear about their friendship continuing privately even if she does not ordinarily provide a running commentary on the royals. What To Know Oprah told the story during an appearance on Live! with Kelly and Mark host Kelly Ripa's Let's Talk Off Camera podcast, which filled in the blanks around an Instagram post by Meghan earlier in the year that showed the ducks. It all started when Oprah got a call from Harry on Easter Saturday saying, "Sorry to bother you, O, but we have a duck problem here." Harry described how a duck had come onto their land and laid eggs, which then hatched into fluffy ducklings near their $14.7 million mansion. "Our pond is a stream. We don't have a pond, so can we bring the ducks over to your pond?" Harry asked. The duke and duchess brought the ducks over in a box, but chaos ensued when they got out of the car in front of Gayle King and her kids. "As he opens the door," Oprah said, "the mama duck flies out and he's got all the baby ducks in a box. He goes, 'Oh no, the mama duck has flown away.'" "Then we're chasing the mama duck who's in the front yard and has flown to the other side. We've got her ducks. Harry's running after her," she said. "Megan gets out. She's running after chasing the mom and trying to get the mom to come back for their ducks. And for like a half an hour, we're running around with the ducks in the box and we're we have video. It's funniest thing I've ever seen." What People Are Saying Kelly Ripa joked after hearing the story: " just like us." In her original Instagram video about the ducks, Meghan wrote: "Wishing you a Happy Easter full of surprises!" Jack Royston is chief royal correspondent for Newsweek, based in London.
