Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin and ex-coach Ravi Shastri have come out in support of Shubman Gill as the young Test captain is facing criticism from all corners after the defeat in Headingley against England. Despite India being in the ascendancy during the majority of the first Test, England managed to secure a five-wicket win in the end by chasing down a record 71-run target.
Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar criticised Gill for being 'too defensive' with his field setting in the first match of the five-Test series, while former England captain Nasser Hussain said India's new Test captain lacks the aura that former captains like Virat Kohli carried on the field.

Azharuddin rejects criticism against Gill
Amid the criticism, Azharuddin said that 'it is too early' to dissect Gill's captaincy and we must give the 25-year-old some more time.
'This is his just first match as a captain, you just can't talk about captaincy. It's too early to talk about captaincy,' Azharuddin told the news agency PTI.
'We should give him a fair chance and he has just taken over. So, you should give him a lot of time and support. We cannot just complain and criticise players like that.'
Shastri wants BCCI selectors to trust Gill
Former Team India head coach and all-rounder Shastri went a step forward and said that Gill needs to hold the Test captaincy position for at least three years. He added that the selectors must stick with him for a long period and he will 'deliver' for the team.
'He's matured a lot. The way he handles the media, the way he talks at press conferences, at tosses, he's matured a lot,' Shastri told Wisden.
'Let him be there for three years. Don't chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series. Stick with him for three years, and I think he will deliver for you.'
The second India-England Test starts on 2 July at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Questions still remain whether pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will be risked by India for the second Test as his workload continues to be managed, while the team are also tossing up whether to include a second spinner in their line-up to help first-choice tweaker Ravindra Jadeja. "Now, whether Bumrah plays or doesn't play, one doesn't know. But let's hope he does because this is a very important Test match and all is not lost. It's just you take it one game at a time. It's a five-match series and India will be hoping to bounce back," he added. Shastri believes newly appointed skipper Gill will have learnt plenty from India's loss in the series opener and expects the young leader to be more proactive for the remainder of the series. "People say he was a little reactive and it can happen when you're playing your first Test match (as captain) and especially in such good batting conditions with a fast outfield and things can happen in that way. But he would have learnt a lot from that and will want to be a little more proactive when it comes now, which means the bowlers and the fielders will have to give him that support. They have got to know what their role is and get out there and execute it," said Shastri.

We know from the start he's only going to play three out of the five. He's had eight days to recover from the last Test. But given conditions, workload, and how we think we can best manage for the next four games, we haven't made a call on that," said assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate in a press conference ahead of the second Test. "We're going to see what the other guys are doing with their workload as well. So technically, yes, he's available. But we haven't made a decision on whether he's going to play or not yet," ten Doeschate said to reporters in the press conference on Monday.
