UAE highlights scope for deeper trade, investment ties within Brics bloc

The United Arab Emirates, represented by Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade, has participated in the Brics Business Forum on the sidelines of the 17th Brics Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the Forum, Al Zeyoudi highlighted the UAE's strong relationships with Brics nations and the community's role in driving innovation, accelerating trade and creating opportunities for cross-border investment. Al Zeyoudi also promoted closer collaboration in key sectors, including logistics, agriculture, renewable energy, technology and healthcare. The Brics Business Forum gathered leaders and business representatives from the community's 10 member nations - Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, and the UAE - to exchange views and ideas on how their public and private sectors can work together to navigate the world's current economic and geopolitical climate. The UAE's participation reflects its belief in constructive collaboration and its commitment to pursuing mutually beneficial global partnerships. The Forum resulted in the endorsement of several initiatives aimed at deepening economic cooperation as well as new private sector partnerships that will enhance trade and investment flows. Al Zeyoudi said the Forum provided an important opportunity to engage with a group of like-minded nations undergoing significant economic transformations: "The Brics community provides a compelling model for growth in the current economic climate. Each of us are seeking economic growth based on investment, innovation, entrepreneurship and trade relationships free from barriers and bureaucracy. This is how the UAE is building our next chapter of economic development, from attracting FDI and fostering new, technology-driven industries to securing free-trade deals with like-minded nations such as Brics members India, Indonesia and Russia. We are eager to maximize this relationship to the fullest extent and build upon these strong foundations in vital economic sectors including energy, logistics, technology, healthcare, and food security." Al Zeyoudi was in Brazil, joined by Saleh Ahmad Salem Alzaraim Al Suwaidi, the UAE's Ambassador to Brazil. The UAE and the Brics nations have been experiencing robust trade growth. In 2024, they shared non-oil trade worth USD 243 billion, a 10.5 per cent increase on 2023. The momentum has accelerated in 2025, with non-oil trade reaching USD 68.3 billion, a year-on-year growth rate of 18.2 per cent, and 2.4 per cent more than Q4, 2024. The UAE's total non-oil exports to Brics countries grew to USD 39.4 billion in 2024, nearly double the level from 2019, while re-exports reached USD 50.5 billion. The UAE ranks 14th globally among Brics trading partners and 5th when measuring internal trade among Brics nations, behind China, Russia, India and Brazil. The Brics community, which initially comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa before expanding to 10 nations this year, represents a significant portion of the global economy. It accounts for approximately 40% of the world's population and around 25 per cent of global GDP. The UAE became a member of Brics in 2024, reflecting its strategic focus on expanding diplomatic and economic ties with markets throughout the world to further enhance its role in driving global economic growth and prosperity.

Milking the future: New federation to unite India's 20L milk producers

Vadodara: Gujarat is all set to unite the country's 20 lakh dairy farmers with the formation of a new multi-state federation, which is taking shape nearly 50 years after cradling the 'White Revolution' that helped India turn from a milk-deficit to a milk-surplus nation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The soon-to-be-announced Sardar Patel Co-operative Dairy Federation (SPCDF) will bring together the relatively unorganised farmers from 20 states who currently pour nearly 100 lakh litres of milk per day (LLPD) through 20,000 'mandalis' and significantly supplement their incomes. This fresh chapter in India's cooperative sector is being scripted from 'Milk City' Anand, also the birthplace of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets the $11 billion homegrown brand Amul. These farmers, who operate from a relatively informal setup at present, will get the benefits of various govt schemes. Importantly, SPCDF is being formed in the year which not only marks the International Year of Cooperatives, the fourth year of the formation of the union cooperation ministry, Ministry of Cooperation, but also the 150th birth anniversary year of Sardar Patel, who sowed the seeds of Amul. Gujarat is also the headquarters of the 1965-established National Dairy Development Board. Sources said the governing structure of the new federation will comprise multiple stakeholders, including a GCMMF representative (20% equity), representatives of 10 milk unions of Gujarat (60% equity), and three board members representing farmers from outside Gujarat (20% equity). Currently, Gujarat is home to 18 milk unions, which are members of GCMMF. Of these, 10 milk unions, including Banas Dairy, Sabar Dairy, Amul Dairy, and Mehsana's Dudhsagar Dairy, procure close to 100 LLPD milk from states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar, among others. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Amul's member unions are fast expanding their national footprint to cover other states as well. "SPCDF will be formed and governed under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (MSCS) Act. The members of these societies formed under the Amul model will get all the benefits, including government schemes. This is essentially a move towards the goal of White Revolution 2.0 as envisioned by GOI to expand the dairy cooperatives network, making them efficient and effective," said an official close to the development. "Effectively, this will expand the national cooperative network," the official said. Currently, with a network of 36 lakh farmers across 18,600 villages of Gujarat and 18 member unions that procure 300 LLPD, GCMMF (Amul Fed) is the world's largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative. It is ranked 8th among the top 20 dairy companies in the world in terms of milk processing, as per the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN). Stop eviction drives conducted sans due process, CLP urges guv

1 2 3 Guwahati: Assam's Congress Legislature Party (CLP) members on Saturday met governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj Bhawan here and submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention to halt the ongoing and proposed eviction drives allegedly affecting indigenous, tribal, and erosion-displaced communities. In their memorandum, the opposition members said "The incidents of eviction transgresse the provisions of the Forest Rights Act 2006, the Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA 1996), Chapter X (Protect Land Rights in Tribal Belts/Blocks) of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886, Assam (Temporarily Settled Tenancy Areas) Act 1971 and landmark decisions by the Supreme Court." The CLP delegation also demanded that an independent commission of inquiry be constituted for probe into all evictions conducted since 2022, with a special focus on Sixth Schedule districts and tribal belt and block protections. "Direct the Govt of Assam to publish a comprehensive land rights regularisation policy, clearly distinguishing long-settled indigenous occupants from speculative encroachers," they said in the memorandum, added that legal and humane rehabilitation measures must be ensured in line with constitutional morality and India's obligations under the UN Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. "The people of Assam — especially its tribals, erosion-displaced citizens, and indigenous communities — look to your office as the constitutional conscience of the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo These eviction drives, conducted without due process or consent in the name of "development", threaten to dispossess the very people whose land rights the Constitution seeks to uphold," the memorandum read. They also submitted a "People's Charter for Humane and Lawful Eviction Policy in Assam" which "outlines urgent reforms that uphold constitutional values, protect marginalised communities, and promote accountability". The charter includes establishment of a state-wide eviction protocol, mandatory rehabilitation and resettlement framework, suspension of all evictions without due process, setting up of a legal aid and grievance redress platform and creation of a multi-stakeholder eviction review board.
