Nissan begins talks with union to cut jobs at European regional office

Time of India3 hours ago
Nissan Motor has begun negotiations with the union representing staff at its European regional office about changes that will include job losses, according to a company document and internal emails.
The struggling Japanese automaker, which has embarked on a major restructuring, confirmed it has entered consultations with staff representatives at
Nissan Automotive Europe
, its regional office in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, France, which has around 560 staff.
The office, which also oversees Nissan's operations for Africa, the Middle East, India and Oceania, is set to undergo major changes, according to a person with knowledge of the issue who declined to be identified.
Management and the union agreed to discuss voluntary redundancies before any forced layoffs, the document seen by Reuters showed. Talks are expected to conclude by October 20, with full details to be shared with staff in November, the document and the emails said.
"We are working diligently and respectfully with all parties to ensure that this process is conducted with care, transparency and in full compliance with legal requirements," Massimiliano Messina, Nissan's vice chairperson for the region, said in a July 31 email.
Messina also said in the email that no decisions had yet been made.
After taking the helm in April, CEO Ivan Espinosa announced a sweeping restructuring that includes cutting about 15 per cent of Nissan's workforce, slashing global production capacity by nearly 30 per cent to 2.5 million vehicles and the number of its manufacturing sites to 10 from 17.
The automaker, which has seen weak sales in China and the U.S. compound pain brought on from an expansionist strategy, hopes to save 500 billion yen ($3.4 billion) with the restructuring.
In recent developments, Nissan said last week it would stop output at its Civac plant in Mexico by March next year.
It also said it will end car production at its Oppama plant in Japan by March 2028 and at Nissan-Shatai's Shonan factory by March 2027.
The automaker employs nearly 19,000 people across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India and Oceania, with close to 60 per cent based in Europe, according to a diversity report published in October 2024.

Zelenskyy speaks with Trump ahead of Putin ceasefire deadline

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that he had had a 'productive' conversation with his US counterpart Donald Trump on ending the war, sanctions on Russia and the finalisation of a US-Ukraine drone deal. Trump, who has signalled frustration with Vladimir Putin in recent weeks, has given the Russian president until August 8 to make peace in Ukraine or face tougher sanctions. 'President Trump is fully informed about Russian strikes on Kyiv and other cities and communities,' Zelenskyy wrote on X, referring to intensifying drone and missile attacks. Trump has threatened to hit Russia with new sanctions and impose 100% tariffs on countries that buy its oil, but sources close to the Kremlin told Reuters that Putin was unlikely to bow to the ultimatum. Zelenskyy said Ukraine was also ready to conclude a deal with the US on the purchase of Ukrainian drones that would amount to 'one of the strongest agreements'. He had earlier said the deal was worth around $30 billion. Ukraine is increasingly seeking financing and investment from its foreign partners to bolster its burgeoning domestic arms industry. Zelenskyy said Kyiv's European partners had so far pledged to buy more than $1 billion in US weapons for Ukraine as part of a new scheme.

Cadillac will add value as 11th F1 team, says McLaren's Zak Brown

Cadillac's arrival in Formula One next year as an 11th team will bring added financial value with new partners and more fan engagement rather than diluting resources, according to McLaren's American chief executive Zak Brown. The General Motors-backed team have taken staff already from rival outfits, their European headquarters at Silverstone being close to other factories, and are also competing for sponsorship. Brown, whose team are dominating this year's championship after winning the 2024 constructors' title, saw no reason to fear a dilution of resources, however. 'I think on employees they are definitely going to take a lot more than they give, which is fine,' he said at last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. 'My general view is if someone wants to go work for a rival team then shame on me. Brown expected Cadillac also to bring more competition eventually, although it faced a tough challenge as newcomers, and more fans to a series that now has three U.S. rounds and a growing audience in America. 'Will we get a better U.S. TV deal, more American presence? I think their sponsors and Cadillac will spend money in the sport, the teams get a percentage of that so I see them as a value add to the sport,' he added. 'I'm not worried about maybe some of the short term-ness of they are going to take an employee here or there or poach a sponsor here or there. I think the contribution will be bigger than that.' Cadillac secured approval of their bid in March, after a 764-day entry process and initial opposition from Formula One and the other 10 teams wary of a potential reduction in the share of revenues. The team are also backed by TWG Global, whose CEO Mark Walter has an estimated net worth of $12.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Services sector growth at 11-month high in July, but hiring hits 15-month low

MUMBAI: The services sector continued its strong run in July, hitting an 11-month high of 60.5, slightly up from 60.4 in June, according to a private reading of the data. But the hiring data poured cold water on the overall growth as fresh headcount addition weakened in the reporting month to a 15-month low. According to the services purchasing managers index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global for HSBC India, the services activity rose to an 11-month high of 60.5, driven by robust export orders. This comes on heels of flash manufacturing PMI rising to 60.7 in July, a 16-month peak. Survey respondents cited strong advertising campaigns, new client onboarding, and solid demand as the primary drivers of growth. Export orders improved, with firms securing contracts from Asian, American, Canadian, European, the UAE importers. Sectorally, finance and insurance led growth, while real estate and business services lagged. However, all in not well with hiring slowing despite surging demand. Despite healthy order books, employment growth eased to its weakest pace in 15 months, with fewer than 2% of the surveyed companies adding staff in July. 'At 60.5, the services PMI indicates a strong growth momentum, led by a pick-up in exports. Optimism has risen but remains below the first half levels,' said HSBC India chief economist Pranjul Bhandari said in a note. Also, another negative is the rising price pressure with the report noting that input costs and output charges are rising at a faster pace than in June, reflecting higher food, freight, and labour expenses, she says.
