German doctor goes on trial for 15 murders
BERLIN (AFP)A German doctor went on trial Monday accused of killing 15 patients with lethal injections and acting as "master of life and death" over those in his care.The 40-year-old palliative care specialist, named by German media as Johannes M., is alleged to have killed 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024 while working in Berlin.The doctor is accused of injecting the victims, aged between 25 and 94, with deadly cocktails of sedatives, and in some cases setting fire to their homes in a bid to cover up his crimes.The accused had "visited his patients under the pretext of providing medical care", prosecutor Philipp Meyhoefer said at the opening of the trial at the state court in Berlin.A co-worker first raised the alarm over Johannes M. last July after becoming suspicious that so many of his patients had died in fires, according to Die Zeit newspaper.He was arrested in August, with prosecutors initially linking him to four deaths. But subsequent investigations uncovered a host of other suspicious cases, and in April prosecutors charged Johannes M. with 15 counts of murder.The suspect reportedly trained as a radiologist and a general practitioner before going on to specialise in palliative care.
Prosecutors said he had "no motive beyond killing" and are seeking a life sentence.

The UN has warned that mass displacement in the occupied West Bank had hit levels not seen since the start of Israel's occupation of the territory nearly 60 years ago. It said an Israeli military operation launched in the north of the occupied West Bank in January had forcibly displaced tens of thousands of people, raising concerns of ethnic cleansing. Israeli security forces had during the same period issued demolition orders for about 1,400 homes in the northern West Bank, he said, describing the figures as "alarming". He pointed out that Israeli demolitions had displaced 2,907 Palestinians across the West Bank since October 2023. Another 2,400 Palestinians - nearly half of them children - had been displaced as a result of Israeli settler actions, he added, stating that the combined result was "emptying large parts of the West Bank of Palestinians". "Permanently displacing the civilian population within occupied territory amounts to unlawful transfer," Kheetan said. Kheetan said 757 attacks by Israeli settlers had been recorded in the West Bank during the first half of the year, a 13 percent increase on the same period last year. The attacks injured 96 Palestinians in June alone, he told reporters, adding that this was the highest monthly injury toll of Palestinians from Israeli settler attacks in over two decades. Since October 2023, at least 964 Palestinians have been killed in the occupied West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, according to the UN. CNN crew attacked by Israeli settlers while reporting in occupied West Bank
CNN's Jerusalem correspondent Jeremy Diamond says he and his team were attacked by Israeli settlers while reporting in the occupied West Bank this week. Diamond had travelled to the area to interview the father of 20-year-old Saif Musallet, an American-Palestinian citizen and one of two Palestinians killed by Israeli settlers on Friday. 'As we were covering this story, my team & I were attacked by Israeli settlers. The back window of our vehicle was smashed, but we managed to escape unharmed,' he posted on X. He added: 'This is just a sliver of the reality many Palestinians face in the West Bank amid rising settler violence. Earlier this month two journalists from the German state broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) were attacked by Israeli settlers while reporting in the occupied West Bank. The correspondent and cameraman came under assault in the Palestinian village of Sinjil, north of Ramallah. They were covering a planned protest against mounting settler violence when a group of settlers hurled stones at them and chased them from the scene.
