Android TV gets silently updated with more home screen content tabs — whether you like it or not

TL;DR Android TV devices are receiving new content tabs on the home screen via a server-side update.
These new tabs add 'Top Selling Movies,' 'Popular Movies and Shows,' and 'Trending on Google' to the home screen.
There's no way to opt out of the update, so users who dislike the added clutter can consider switching to alternative Android TV launchers.
Android TV, as a platform, is still very much around, but it has been overshadowed by Google TV, a content engine that sits on top of the platform. Users have frequently complained about updates from Android TV to Google TV turning their TV and streaming sticks into a lag fest, and you can blame their probably low-specced hardware and the intrusive ad-ridden platform for it. Android TV has managed to stay relatively clean from these changes, but it seems the content engine is coming for it too.
Reddit user aniruddhdodiya spotted that their Android TV was recently updated to feature three extra tabs in the home screen. Their TV already came with a Play Next tab, but now they also had tabs for Top Selling Movies, Popular Movies and Shows, and Trending on Google.
I have received the new tabs on my Sony Bravia X80H, which runs on Android TV 10 with the December 2024 security patch. The content tabs are similar in category to those on Google TV. Unsurprisingly, the content tabs surface recommendations even from apps I don't have installed, so I need to subscribe to new services to view them.
What makes this change even worse is that some of these categories already exist on the home screen — on my Sony TV, I already have a dedicated Top-selling Movies row on the home screen, so now I end up with two rows of the same content ads.

This change is very likely rolling out to Android TV devices through a server-side update of either the Android TV Home app or the Android TV Core Services app, so there's no way for you to avoid it unless you change the launcher.
Many people who have stuck with Android TV will hate that their home screen now has more clutter and more monetization surfaces for Google to push 'recommendations' through. Some people may like the change, though, as it would let them discover new content right on the home screen, though one can argue there were already plenty of ways to do so.
If you have received the new tabs and hate them, you can consider switching to alternative Android TV launchers like Projectivy Launcher that let you ditch the recommendations for a cleaner TV experience. You'll probably even get a faster and sleeker experience than the stock launcher, so try it out.

Google's Dual-Box Plan Seeks to Avert DMA Fines

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) unit Google has rolled out a fresh Option B proposal to tweak its search?results layout, aiming to appease rivals and the European Commission under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), just days before a pivotal Brussels workshop. In March, Brussels accused Google of favoring its own vertical offeringsShopping, Hotels and Flightsin general search results, breaching DMA rules on impartial treatment of third?party services. Last week, Google floated a plan to add a Vertical Search Service (VSS) box at the top of search pages, linking to specialist engines for travel and hospitality. Under the newly disclosed Option B, Google would complement the VSS box with a second supplier box directly beneath it, featuring free, algorithmically organized links to hotels, restaurants, airlines and transport providers. According to documents sent by the Commission, this dual?box arrangement is intended to give competitors visibility while sidestepping characterizations of the feature as a Google?owned service. Google's spokesperson says the company has made hundreds of alterations to comply with the DMA, but warns that the new rules risk worse online products and experiences for Europeans. The DMA empowers Brussels to fine gatekeepers up to 10 percent of global turnover for non-compliance. Google, designated a gatekeeper alongside Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Meta (NASDAQ:META), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and ByteDance, faces its first DMA workshop on July 78 in Brussels, where its proposals will be scrutinized by both competitors and regulators. Failure to secure buy-in could trigger a substantial penalty and force more drastic overhauls to Google's core search business. With the July workshop looming, Google's Option B is its latest bid to strike a middle groundbalancing regulatory demands for neutrality with the need to preserve its search-driven ad revenue model. As Samsung tests the tri-fold waters, a major rival is readying a second-gen model

Paul Jones / Android Authority TL;DR HUAWEI is reportedly planning to launch its next-generation tri-fold phone later this year. This successor to the Mate XT Ultimate Design could arrive before Samsung's first tri-fold even hits the shelves. The new HUAWEI foldable is expected to improve on the Mate XT's durability and performance. Today's leaks may have given us clues that Samsung's first tri-fold foldable is edging closer to release, but it seems like one of its top competitors may already be another step ahead by then. According to South Korean publication The Bell (h/t Jukan Choi on X), HUAWEI plans to launch its next-generation tri-fold phone later this year. The device is expected to improve on the durability and performance of the original Mate XT Ultimate Design, which launched in China last September and went global in February. That phone reportedly sold over 400,000 units within its first two months on sale. Meanwhile, Samsung's tri-fold plans are finally coming into clearer view. Earlier today, we shared exclusive images from One UI 8 showing its design for the first time, revealing two inward-folding hinges in a G-shaped fold rather than the Mate XT's S-shaped fold. The Bell reports that Samsung will start small-scale production of its tri-fold in September, with a release expected in the fourth quarter, but availability may be limited to South Korea and China, and it certainly won't be cheap. Specs-wise, Samsung's tri-fold — possibly launching as the Galaxy G Fold — is tipped to feature a 10-inch OLED display, Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, and a camera setup similar to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, including a 200MP primary sensor. However, its slim design could mean a smaller battery than HUAWEI's Mate XT, which houses a sizable 5,600mAh cell. We reviewed the Mate XT earlier this year, and while its sky-high price and lack of Google services limited its practicality, there was no denying its engineering appeal. Now, with HUAWEI already working on a refined sequel before Samsung's first tri-fold even hits shelves, the battle for these ultra-premium foldables is only getting more intense. Got a tip?
