Lionsgate Sets Jason Statham Thriller ‘Mutiny' for January 2026 Release

Yahoo20-02-2025
Lionsgate has set the release of 'Mutiny,' an upcoming action thriller starring and produced by Jason Statham, for January 9, 2026.
Directed by Jean-Francois Richet from a screenplay by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis, 'Mutiny' will see Statham play Cole Reed, a man who is left on the run when he is framed for the murder of his billionaire industrialist boss. As he tries to clear his name, he uncovers an international conspiracy.
Annabelle Wallis and Jason Wong also star in the film, with Statham producing alongside Marc Butan of MadRiver Pictures. Lionsgate is handling domestic distribution with Sky handling U.K. distribution.
'Mutiny' currently does not have any wide releases directly competing against it, though it will release a weekend after Universal/Blumhouse's 'Soulm8te,' a spinoff of the 2023 breakout horror hit 'M3GAN.'
Lionsgate found some modest success from the early January box office thanks to 'Den of Thieves: Pantera,' which grossed just under $36 million at the U.S. box office with a third installment in the Gerard Butler action series greenlit. The studio's next release is the inspirational film 'The Unbreakable Boy' starring Zachary Levi, which hits theaters this Friday.

Jessie J Has ‘No Cancer Spread' Following Mastectomy: ‘Happy Tears Are Real'

Jessie J is on the road to recovery after completing surgery following an early breast cancer diagnosis. The singer-songwriter shared an update on Instagram following her mastectomy, revealing that the cancer did not spread. 'Results = I have NO cancer spread,' Jessie wrote, followed by a string of crying emojis. 'Happy tears are real. Thank YOU for the prayers, the love, the well wishes, the joy and all the positive energy.' The caption accompanied a video of her son, Sky, learning to say 'Mommy's gonna be OK.' More from Rolling Stone Jessie J Hopes Her Breast Cancer Is 'All Gone' Following Surgery Jessie J Shares the 'Honest Lows and Highs' After Undergoing Breast Cancer Surgery Jessie J Played a Show Right After 5 Breast Biopsies: 'I Didn't Want to Cancel' 'This video is from the night before my surgery,' she wrote in her caption. 'We called it baby boy. You are my biggest ray of light and with you in my life the darkness will never win.' Following the surgery in late June, Jessie said that one of the biggest pitfalls of the experience was 'not being able to be the mum I'm used to being and not picking Sky up,' as well as 'the fear of not knowing if the cancer is all gone.' Prior to the procedure, the singer shared an emotional video in which she cried at the thought of hearing her son say he loves her and not being able to say it back. Jessie is celebrating her victory, but still has a ways to go before she's fully recovered. 'Lots of healing to go and one more surgery to make these cousins look more like sisters,' she wrote. 'But for now it's gratitude time and I am changing my name to The LopJess monster.' When Jessie revealed her diagnosis, she mentioned that she was 'not processing it because I'm working so hard.' In a separate post shared in June, she looked back on a live performance she completed right after she had undergone several breast biopsies in private. 'I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support and also their own stories,' she said. 'The Blair Witch Project' Franchise Receives Positive Update

While The Blair Witch Project did spawn a franchise following its successful theatrical release in 1999, the follow-ups never quite captured the same atmosphere or momentum that made the original a worldwide sensation. Fortunately, a major positive update has been given regarding The Blair Witch Project and its future from one of the original movie's stars. The cast behind The Blair Witch Project were instrumental for the original film's success, though they were never properly compensated or included with the franchise's future. It looks like this could change, as original star Michael C. Williams has discussed some exciting developments with the franchise under Blumhouse and Lionsgate. As shared below via Instagram, Williams chose this month – which marks the 26th anniversary of the original film – to share the good news. As fans know, Williams and his co-stars Heather Donahue and Joshua Leonard, have struggled to make themselves heard by the studios involved with the franchise. It seems that finally happened: 'In a world where it increasingly seems as though no one listens to one another any longer, I'm beyond grateful to report that Lionsgate and Jason Blum/Blumhouse actually did listen. While I won't get into the details, I can say that after 26 years, I finally feel like a valued contributor to the world of The Blair Witch Project (though, in fairness, you fans have always made me feel that way!) and I truly appreciate these folks hearing us out and coming to the table. They proved to be thoughtful and responsive to our concerns and it is important to me to acknowledge this with public gratitude and appreciation towards them.' Regarding the franchise's future, details were scarce, but it sounds like things are moving forward and Williams seems to be involved: 'I am excited for what's to come next in the Blair Witch universe. I've found the map and we're definitely moving forward.' Here's the complete statement featuring his update on the Blair Witch franchise: Hopefully we'll have more details soon. Fans of The Blair Witch Project have been eager to see whether or not Hollywood can recreate the magic of the original film, and similarly they've hoped the original cast could be part of it, so perhaps we'll finally get that opportunity. As always, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates as we have them.

Taron Egerton Shaved His Head and Bulked Up to Play an Ex-Con in ‘She Rides Shotgun,' but ‘There Was No Method Nonsense'

Taron Egerton doesn't even blink when asked what he likes about Nate, the brutally violent ex-con he plays in Lionsgate's new gritty crime thriller, 'She Rides Shotgun.' 'I actually like that he hates himself,' he says. 'He's got that kind of reluctant hero thing, the kind of tortured hero, but he would never think of himself in those terms. He's only reflective about his mistakes. I think he's somebody that kind of walks around feeling like he's not fit to be in the world, certainly not fit to be a father. That kind of emotional inarticulacy is quite interesting to me. I think it's really human to walk around with a voice in your head telling you that you've fucked up.' More from Variety Jessica Chastain Enrolls at Harvard Kennedy School to Get Masters Degree in Public Administration Taron Egerton Says 'I Don't Think I'm a Good Choice' for James Bond: It 'Kind of Consumes Your Life' and 'Would Be Wasted on Me' Liam Neeson on Why 'The Naked Gun' Reboot Is Needed: 'Because We're All F-ed' The film, directed by Nick Rowland and adapted from Jordan Harper's novel, follows Nate being recently released from prison after five years behind bars as he's hunted by a nefarious drug kinpin with his estranged young daughter Polly (Ana Sophia Heger) in tow. 'I thought it was a very different role for me, the chance to do something that felt a little bit grittier maybe than I'd done before,' says Egerton, who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Elton John in 'Rocketman.' 'I was so moved by that central relationship with his daughter. But movies like this are hard to make. They're hard to get out in the world now, but it's just the most creatively rewarding thing.' Egerton, who serves as a producer on the film, continues, 'Everybody is looking for the sure thing. An old school movie like this just isn't a sure thing…There was never enough time to make this film and there was never enough money. We pulled it off in 25 days, which I think is a miracle. There were a lot of sacrifices to get it made.' Egerton's transformation to portray Nate is remarkable. Gone are the actor's sweet-faced boyish looks and charm. He not only shaved his head and covered himself in menacing tattoos for the role but he put on a considerable amount of bulk and muscles. 'There's something very freeing about shaving your head,' Egerton says. As for his hulking frame, Egerton says. 'It's really hard to change your body for a role then have to reset it back to whatever you are. I think it's something that we slightly trivialize in Hollywood and kind of glorify as this bastion of greatness that actors push themselves to get a certain role, but personally I find it quiet hard to manage and navigate talking about it in a way that feels healthy. 'But, yeah, it was the physique of somebody who has been in prison for five years, living off of prison food. It's bulky and not super lean. He's not a guy who's obsessed with his body. It's a functional strength for feeling strong in prison,' he explains. At least one temporary tattoo almost became permanent. 'There were chilis behind my ear and I booked an appointment to go and have them really tattooed on my head,' Egerton recalls. 'It was the last day of the movie. I nearly did it. It was insane. My mother stopped me. She happened to be in New Mexico visiting that weekend and she shut it down.' (For the record, Egerton says he has no real body ink.) As harsh acting and appearing as Nate is, Egerton and the rest of the cast and crew made sure to keep things far from dark as possible for young Ana's sake. 'We were constantly walking a line between wanting to indulge her desire to always push things further and make the most emotional and dramatic choices whilst also trying to protect her and make sure it always stayed fun and always stayed light,' Egerton says. 'There was no Method nonsense. When we called cut, I'm back to being Taron and she's back to be Anna.' 'She Rides Shotgun' is the latest in a string of dramatic thrillers for Egerton. He can currently be seen in Apple TV+'s inspired-by-a-true-story 'Smoke' as arson investigator who is also an arsonist. Next up is 'Apex,' a Netflix wilderness survival thriller with Charlize Theron. 'It's definitely the strangest part I've ever played. It's a big swing,' Egerton teases about 'Apex.' 'The character I play is fucking weird. Thankfully the producers and Netflix were very supportive of me bringing some quite strange ideas to the table.' Perhaps he might consider some lighter work in the future to balance things out? 'I'd love to do a rom-com,' Egerton says, naming 'When Harry Met Sally' and 'Notting Hill' as two of his favorite movies. 'It just hasn't happened yet. Put it out into the ether for me.' 'She Rides Shotgn' is in theaters Friday.
