The hidden gem Scottish Highlands village with pub that serves 'best ever' fish and chips

The picturesque destination lies at the meeting point of three beautiful lochs.
If you are looking for a day-trip destination in Scotland, then you can't go wrong with the Highlands. As you move further north, there are countless villages and small towns worth a visit.
One of the hidden gem destinations in the Highlands that you might not have even heard of is Dornie. The small former fishing village, nestled in the Lochalsh district in western Ross-shire, is the Daily Record's latest Village of the Week.
Due to its location close to the Skye Bridge, Dornie is often regarded as a stopping point for those heading to the Isle of Skye. However, it is well worth a visit in its own right.
Dornie is situated at the convergence of Loch Duich, Loch Alsh, and Loch Long. It benefits from spectacular views out across the water.
Home to a population of around just 350, there isn't a lot of opportunity for shopping around the village. However, it is a great place to clear your head and breathe in the fresh country air.
Thankfully, there are a couple of spots for tasty food and drink. The Clachan pub and The Dornie Hotel both serve up delicious fresh meals, while the latter is a great place to stay the night if you don't want your trip to Dornie to end.
The village is also a short walk from the world-famous Eilean Donan Castle. Even if the name does not sound familiar, you will likely have seen it before—as it is one of the most photographed castles in the world.
Continue reading for some photos showing some of Dornie's highlights. You can also find a few of our past Towns and Villages of the Week below:

Center Parcs issues major update on first Scottish site

The holiday park giants have confirmed they have now submitted plans to build the site near Hawick in the Scottish Borders Center Parcs have submitted their planning application for the first holiday village in the Scotland. The holiday park company, which has six villages across the UK and Ireland, has officially put forward plans to build three miles north of Hawick in the Scottish Borders. The £400m vacation park in Huntlaw Farm just off the A7, is expected to attract more than 350,000 visitors per year. If planning permission is given the green light, the site will reportedly generate between 750 and 800 jobs during the construction phase. Around 1,200 permanent, non-seasonal roles will then be created once the village has been established. ‌ ‌ A wide range of self-catering holiday lodges will be built for families, with Center Parcs confirming around 700 are planned. There will also be a subtropical water park with slides, rides and pools. As well as lots of indoor, outdoor and water sports activities suitable for all ages, there will be a forest spa and a variety of family friendly restaurants. Center Parcs have described the "picturesque location" as the perfect spot for its new village because of its: "Rolling hills and open countryside providing stunning scenery at every turn. Historic houses, grand abbeys, impressive castles and ancient ruins lining the historic landscape, and diverse wildlife including ospreys, golden eagles, red squirrels and deer." Colin McKinlay, Center Parcs CEO said: "Over the last eight months, we've listened carefully to feedback from local communities and stakeholders and have worked hard to shape a proposal that is both ambitious and sensitive to its surroundings. "We're incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to engage with us. Your insights have helped us develop a design that, we believe, blends seamlessly with the natural landscape while delivering high-quality accommodation and leisure experiences for families. "This is an exciting opportunity – not just for Center Parcs but for the Scottish Borders. As we witnessed when we opened our newest location in County Longford in Ireland in 2019, a new village has the potential to transform local tourism, create year-round employment and bring a significant boost to the regional economy." Some of the key features that have been proposed include a long driveway from the west of the site, off the A7, as the main access route into the village. Six designated accommodation zones where lodges may be situated. Another proposed key feature is enhanced screening to minimise the impact on neighbouring properties whilst maintaining the areas natural beauty. The planning permission application can be seen on the Scottish Borders Council's website.

Foreign Office issue warning to holidaymakers travelling to Cyprus this summer

Brits are being advised to be mindful ahead of travelling. UK holidaymakers heading to Cyprus this summer are being warned to travel with caution. The island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea is popular with Brits, especially during the summer holidays. In a statement issued by the Foreign Office, travellers were told terrorist attacks "cannot be ruled out" in the country. Cyprus is not directly involved in the conflict between Iran and Israel, however, "ongoing hostilities" between the countries could trigger escalation and impact the wider region. ‌ Tourist hotspot Ayia Napa is just 145 miles away from Israel. ‌ The Foreign Office statement read: "Ongoing hostilities in the region and between Israel and Iran could escalate quickly and pose security risks for the wider region." According to the Express, t ourists are advised to keep an eye out for developments in the conflict in the media. They should also always follow the guidance of the local authorities. The Foreign Office added: "There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times." It continued: "Although there's no recent history of terrorism in Cyprus, attacks cannot be ruled out. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! This further heightens worries about the possible impact on Cyprus if the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies. Airlines are currently operating normally to and from Cyprus. While no incidents have led to flight disruptions, tourists are advised to contact their airline if they are concerned about potential conflict escalation. However, Brits are unable to cancel their trip to Cyprus for a full refund as the Foreign Office does not warn against travel. Likewise, travel insurance will not help as the insurer will say there is no reason not to go. ‌ The Foreign Office also recently issued advice for those heading to Spain, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus ahead of peak summer holiday season as a heatwave sweeps across Europe. And even northern Europe is experiencing high temperatures which will affect those travelling to France. A statement read: "The Department of Meteorology of Cyprus issues warnings for severe weather, especially during summer. Weather can sometimes cause travel disruption." Bas Amelung, Wageningen University environmental systems analysis professor, said that popular holiday destinations loved by Brits could become unbearably hot in summers to come and could change the tourist landscape for places like Spain, Greece and Turkey among others. He said: "Countries such as Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey that currently attract the traditional 'sun and sand' summer tourists are likely to become too hot for comfort in the summer. "People take decisions based on their perceptions," Amelung further explains. "So if a large majority of holidaymakers thinks some European destinations will soon be 'too hot', they may well start adapting, either by going somewhere else in summer or by going to the same place in another season."
