The Chicago Cubs' offense has been stellar in 2025, ranking No. 2 in MLB, averaging 5.37 runs per game. The only weakness in the Cubs' lineup has been the production from third base.

Chicago have tried a few different options, but none have been able to provide consistent success.
Rookie third baseman Matt Shaw has received the bulk of the work at third base. Shaw was one of the Cubs' top infield prospects coming into the season, and Chicago hoped he could grow into the future at the position.
However, in 48 games and 160 at-bats, Shaw has struggled, hitting just .219 with a .313 SLG, and just a couple of home runs and nine RBI. The young third baseman struggled mightily out of the gate and was sent back down to Triple-A. When he rejoined the major league club, he had a stretch where he got hot, but he has not been able to sustain it.
The Cubs' other options at third base have come from a combination of Vidal Brujan, Jon Berti, Nicky Lopez, and Gage Workman, who have combined to hit less than .160 and seven RBI in total.

ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan put together a list of trade candidates that has Arizona Diamondbacks' third baseman Eugenio Suarez as a potential answer for the Cubs at third base.

Suarez is 34 years old and in the final year of his contract, so he would be a likely trade piece for the Diamondbacks at the deadline if they decide to sell. Although Arizona has been against becoming sellers all season, their wave of injuries has nearly forced them to consider all options.
The Diamondbacks' third baseman is having a very strong season, hitting .251 with an .892 OPS. Suarez has hit 25 home runs on the season and leads the National League with 67 RBI.
The 12-year veteran currently holds a 142 OPS+ this season, which, if it continues, would set a new career-high.

Suarez did leave the Diamondbacks' game against the Chicago White Sox on Monday after being hit by a pitch on his left hand. However, his initial X-rays came back negative, and it's been labeled as a left-hand contusion.
With Suarez in the final year of his contract, the Cubs would likely be acquiring the third baseman solely for a World Series run in 2025. However, the Cubs already rank No. 2 in runs scored, and adding an elite hitter to the one weak spot in the lineup could lift the Cubs to where they need to be.
