Mets Facing Brett Baty Decision After Roster News on Thursday
Mets Facing Brett Baty Decision After Roster News on Thursday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets are just a half-game out of first place despite having a revolving door at third base this season. Veterans Mark Vientos and Brett Baty, as well as prospect Ronny Mauricio, have all had extended time at the position. However, Vientos hasn't played since June 2 due to a hamstring injury. Advertisement The latter player leads the team with 151 at-bats as a third baseman, while Baty has 109 and Mauricio has 39. Vientos is slashing .230/.298/.380 with six homers and 21 RBI over 53 games, Baty .223/.271/.402 with eight homers and 27 RBI over 59, and Mauricio .224/.274/.414 with three homers and five RBI over 17. Manager Carlos Mendoza explained how the team will manage the depth chart with Vientos getting activated on Friday, via SNY. New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza (64)© Jim Rassol-Imagn Images He said "it's possible" that Vientos, Baty, and Mauricio will all be on the roster together. "We got one more [game] tonight, we gotta get through it, and then we have a decision at the end of the day," he continued. New York could stick Vientos at designated hitter going forward, as he has 34 at-bats in that spot as well. However, that would probably be temporary, as Jesse Winker (oblique) will eventually return too. He's taken 63 of his 67 at-bats as a designated hitter this season and is slashing .239/.321/.418 with one homer and 10 RBI. The Mets could have to decide between keeping Baty or Mauricio in the big leagues at some point. Trade Idea Lands Cubs Answer at Third Base
Trade Idea Lands Cubs Answer at Third Base originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs' offense has been stellar in 2025, ranking No. 2 in MLB, averaging 5.37 runs per game. The only weakness in the Cubs' lineup has been the production from third base. Advertisement Chicago have tried a few different options, but none have been able to provide consistent success. Rookie third baseman Matt Shaw has received the bulk of the work at third base. Shaw was one of the Cubs' top infield prospects coming into the season, and Chicago hoped he could grow into the future at the position. However, in 48 games and 160 at-bats, Shaw has struggled, hitting just .219 with a .313 SLG, and just a couple of home runs and nine RBI. The young third baseman struggled mightily out of the gate and was sent back down to Triple-A. When he rejoined the major league club, he had a stretch where he got hot, but he has not been able to sustain it. The Cubs' other options at third base have come from a combination of Vidal Brujan, Jon Berti, Nicky Lopez, and Gage Workman, who have combined to hit less than .160 and seven RBI in total. Advertisement ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan put together a list of trade candidates that has Arizona Diamondbacks' third baseman Eugenio Suarez as a potential answer for the Cubs at third base. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez (28) hits a two run home run against the Toronto Blue Jays in the second inning at Rogers Hamilton - Imagn Images Suarez is 34 years old and in the final year of his contract, so he would be a likely trade piece for the Diamondbacks at the deadline if they decide to sell. Although Arizona has been against becoming sellers all season, their wave of injuries has nearly forced them to consider all options. The Diamondbacks' third baseman is having a very strong season, hitting .251 with an .892 OPS. Suarez has hit 25 home runs on the season and leads the National League with 67 RBI. The 12-year veteran currently holds a 142 OPS+ this season, which, if it continues, would set a new career-high. Advertisement Suarez did leave the Diamondbacks' game against the Chicago White Sox on Monday after being hit by a pitch on his left hand. However, his initial X-rays came back negative, and it's been labeled as a left-hand contusion. With Suarez in the final year of his contract, the Cubs would likely be acquiring the third baseman solely for a World Series run in 2025. However, the Cubs already rank No. 2 in runs scored, and adding an elite hitter to the one weak spot in the lineup could lift the Cubs to where they need to be. Brian Cashman shares thoughts after Yankees lose Cabrera
The Yankees have been connected to just about every available third baseman since November. Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado and speculative names like Ryan McMahon and Ha-Seong Kim. But seven months later, with the trade deadline still weeks away, Brian Cashman has made zero moves at the position. And now, he's down another option. Advertisement With Oswaldo Cabrera expected to miss the rest of the season due to a fractured ankle, the Yankees' third base depth has taken another hit. Cabrera was already Plan B, behind DJ LeMahieu, who is still finding his form after beginning the season on the injured list. Former top prospect Oswald Peraza hasn't won the job and Jorbit Vivas is just getting his feet under him in the big leagues. So, is a move finally coming? 'We'll see,' Cashman told The New York Post's Dan Martin this week. 'It's hard to make improvements this part of the season. We've got what we've got. We'll assess it and move forward with opportunities as they start to present themselves at whatever positions they do.' New York Yankees general manager Brian Klement-Imagn Images If that sounds familiar, it should. It's been the front office's stance every year as we get closer to the trade deadline. Advertisement Since the offseason began, the Yankees have leaned on internal options, not acquisitions. They passed on Bregman in free agency. They have shown very little interest in an aging Nolan Arenado and his multi-year contract. The Yankees have stuck with LeMahieu through a spring injury. They gave Oswaldo Cabrera a runway. But the external market hasn't been defined yet. Most contending teams aren't moving controllable may explain the resigned tone in Cashman's answer. The Yankees are winning. They're getting by. But third base has been a lingering weak spot all year. And with Cabrera out, it just became harder to ignore.
