Forced to name Yogi Adityanath, RSS leaders: Malegaon case witness turns hostile

India Today11 hours ago
One of the 39 witnesses who turned hostile in the Malegaon 2008 blast case was Milind Joshirao, Trustee of the Abhinav Bharat Trust, who also ran a lift business. Joshirao told the court that ATS officers Shrirao and Param Bir Singh threatened to torture him and coerced him to name Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other RSS functionaries.advertisementHe was picked up by the ATS on October 28, 2008, nearly a month after the blast, and remained in custody until November 7, 2008. He was kept at the ATS office for more than seven days.
Despite being a prosecution witness, Joshirao did not support the claims for which he was brought to court, namely, to establish the motive behind the formation of the Abhinav Bharat organisation, allegedly set up by serving army officer Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit.According to the prosecution, a meeting was held in June 2006 at Raigad Fort, attended by Purohit, businessman Ajay Rahirkar, Rakesh Dhawade, and several witnesses, including Milind Joshirao. Dhawade had been discharged by the special court before the trial commenced. The prosecution claimed that the idea of forming Abhinav Bharat originated with Purohit and was discussed during the Raigad Fort meeting. All attendees reportedly agreed to the proposal and took an oath at the fort to establish Abhinav Bharat and work towards its objectives. The Abhinav Bharat Trust was formed in 2007, according to the prosecution. It was further alleged that the accused aimed to transform India into a 'Hindu Rashtra' called 'Aryavart.' Dissatisfied with the Indian Constitution, they allegedly planned to create their own, form a government in exile and train individuals in guerrilla warfare. The group allegedly intended to eliminate those opposing the formation of a 'Hindu Rashtra'. Purohit was accused of collecting Rs 21 lakh to fund these objectives.Special Public Prosecutor Avinash Rasal cross-examined Joshirao after he was declared hostile by the court. However, even during cross-examination, Joshirao did not make any statements that supported the prosecution's case. He specifically denied attending the Raigad Fort meeting or that any oath was taken to create a separate 'Hindutva Vadi Rashtra'.Instead, he stated, "ATS treated me like an accused and kept me for seven days at their office. The officers pressured me to name five RSS individuals, including Yogi Adityanath, Asimanand, Indresh Kumar, Professor Devdhar, Sadhvi, and Kakaji, in my statement. They assured me I would be released if I did so. When I refused, DCP Shrirao and Additional Commissioner of Police Param Bir Singh threatened me with torture,' as noted by Judge Lahoti.advertisementThe judge further observed that Joshirao's statement 'was written down/recorded solely by an ATS officer.'Considering his testimony in court, the judge stated, 'It clearly indicates that the statement was involuntary. Even if the contents of such a statement are proven by the investigating officer, it may still be insufficient, as it raises doubts regarding its admissibility and the authenticity of such an involuntary statement.'- Ends

Maharashtra awards Rs 3 crore to Divya Deshmukh for FIDE World Cup triumph; ‘happy to motivate students,' she says

Felicitating Divya Deshmukh, 19, for becoming the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women's World Cup, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis awarded Rs 3 crore to her and said that while China used to dominate women's chess, India has managed to break its streak. With her victory, Deshmukh has also become India's 88th Grandmaster. Fadnavis was speaking at a felicitation ceremony organised at Kavivarya Suresh Bhatt Auditorium in Nagpur to celebrate Deshmukh's recent triumph. 'This is a moment of pride not just for Nagpur or Maharashtra, but for the entire nation,' he said. 'China has traditionally dominated women's chess, but two Indian women, including our very own Divya and Koneru Humpy, have broken through. As an Indian, as a Maharashtrian, and as a Nagpurkar, I am deeply proud of Divya's win.' Deshmukh, who hails from Nagpur and began her journey in chess with an Under-9 title, has steadily climbed the global ranks. Recalling her journey, she said, 'Moments like these are rare and precious. I am grateful to the Maharashtra government for all the love and support.' Sharing her happiness on being able to motivate students, Deshmukh said, 'When I was playing, I thought, 'What an incredible opportunity!' I couldn't have reached where I am without the help of the Maharashtra government. I am eternally grateful to Maharashtra for all the love I have received,' adding, 'Whatever I say about Nagpur is not enough; Nagpur is special for me.' Fadnavis praised Deshmukh's discipline and unwavering focus, especially in an age where distractions are abundant. 'At 19, when most people can't put their phones down, she stayed focused and showed the kind of professionalism the game demands,' he remarked. He also acknowledged the contributions of Divya's parents and coaches, calling them strong pillars behind her success. 'She never forgot her coaches, which speaks volumes of her character.' Fadnavis said the state government had earlier awarded Rs 1 crore to Deshmukh for her efforts. 'We are ready to do whatever is necessary to support her,' he remarked, and noted several reforms made in the state's sports policies, including cash prizes, improved training facilities, and permission for coaches to accompany players abroad. 'Athletes can't compete internationally without proper nutrition, training, and support. We have changed the rules to remove these barriers and support sportspersons from Maharashtra,' he emphasised.

Former Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna sentenced to life imprisonment in rape case

A special court in Bengaluru on Saturday sentenced former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna to life imprisonment in a rape case, reported Live Law. On Friday, Revanna was convicted of raping a 48-year-old worker employed at his family's farmhouse and recording the assault. Announcing the punishment on Saturday, Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat told Revanna to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation, according to Bar and Bench. Revanna was arrested on May 31, 2024, after returning to Bengaluru from Germany, where he had fled on April 26, 2024. He was suspended from the Janata Dal (Secular) on April 30, 2024. This came after videos of alleged sexual assaults against several women, allegedly recorded by Revanna himself, surfaced just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He has since been booked in four different cases. Three women have accused Revanna of sexual assault, while the fourth case against him involves charges of sexual harassment, stalking and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code. Special Public Prosecutor BN Jagadeesha had earlier told the court that ' stringent and rigorous punishment' should be imposed on the former MP. However, appearing for Revanna, Senior Advocate Nalina Mayegowda said that he is young and his charitable activities 'and contributions to society should be taken into consideration'. Soon after Revanna fled to Germany, he and his father, former state minister HD Revanna, were booked by the Karnataka Police for sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. In the case where he has been convicted, the chargesheet includes sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to being in a position of control over a woman and committing rape and repeated rape on the same woman. He also faces charges under the Information Technology Act, the Deccan Herald reported. The trial in the case began on May 2, when the statements of the complainant were recorded. A Special Investigation Team of the Karnataka Police had filed charges on April 2.
