Malaysian junior team to compete in Murugappa Gold Cup

The Hindu5 days ago
For the first time in the history of the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup All-India invitational hockey tournament, an International team will be competing in the prestigious event. The Malaysian team, as part of its preparations for the forthcoming FIH men's junior World Cup, will be taking part in the tournament, scheduled to be held at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here from July 10 to 20.
Speaking to The Hindu on Friday, Rajiv Reddy, Organising Secretary of the tournament, said: 'We wanted to raise the bar and we are happy that the Malaysian team is coming to Chennai. They also wanted to get acclimatised to the conditions before the junior World Cup to be held in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10. We tried to get a team from Europe or from Asia. At the time, Malaysian Hockey Confederation expressed its intentions and we were only too happy. In the future, we are keen to get international teams.'
According to Reddy, the biggest challenge was to get approval from few Central agencies. 'We received clearance from Hockey India and Sports Ministry, and we were thrilled when we got clearance from Ministry of External Affairs and Home Ministry,' he said.
China, too, showed interest but the MCC shot it down, he added.
The Malaysian team is expected to arrive in the city on July 10 with its head coach Nor Saiful Zaini, its CEO Jayanandhan Vivekanandan and support staff.

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: In disbelief! Nitish Reddy misjudges, leaves a beauty from Chris Woakes and walks back stunned

Nitish Kumar Reddy of India is bowled by Chris Woakes of England (Photo by) On a testing Day 1 pitch at Edgbaston, 22-year-old Nitish Kumar Reddy became the latest casualty of a seaming English delivery — this time not to an extravagant shot, but to a judgment error. The young right-hander was bowled for just 1 after shouldering arms to a Chris Woakes delivery that moved sharply back in. Coming in after the dismissal of Rishabh Pant , India were still in a strong position at 208 for 4. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Reddy, looking to settle in, perhaps expected the pitch to behave like the first session, where the movement was minimal. But Woakes, operating with a slightly older ball and under more overcast skies, had other plans. Bowling from a slightly wider angle, Woakes delivered a good-length ball that initially appeared to be heading safely outside off. Reddy, assuming it would hold its line, lifted his bat and let it go. However, the ball seamed in viciously — a classic Edgbaston special — and crashed into off stump. Reddy stood frozen, barely believing what had just happened, before slowly making the long walk back. At 218 for 5, the visitors still have a chance to push for a big first-innings total, but England's decision to bowl first is starting to pay off — thanks in large part to Woakes's discipline and Reddy's miscalculation. ENG vs IND: Ben Stokes dismisses Yashasvi Jaiswal moments after intense war of words

England captain Ben Stokes landed a decisive blow on Yashasvi Jaiswal, dismissing the in-form Indian opener just moments after a heated on-field exchange on Day 1 of the second Test at Edgbaston, England captain, sensing the need for a breakthrough, brought himself into the attack and struck immediately. Tempting Jaiswal with a wide delivery outside off, Stokes drew a loose slash from the left-hander, who had taken similar risks earlier in his innings. This time, though, he only managed to feather an edge through to Jamie Smith behind the let out a primal roar, charging across the outfield in jubilation. It was a moment that broke a threatening 66-run stand with Shubman Gill and halted India's charge. Jaiswal departed for a well-compiled 87 — an innings that featured aggression, flair, and a bit of bite. India blended caution with bursts of aggression to reach 182 for 3 at tea on the opening day of the second Test against England here on Wednesday. That bite was on display earlier in the day when Jaiswal and Stokes exchanged words in the 17th over of the innings. After conceding five runs — including a commanding boundary — Stokes stared down the young Indian, who didn't back away from the confrontation. The two engaged in a brief but intense verbal duel, adding spice to an already charged heated JAISBALL BAZBALL on display! #ENGvIND 2nd Test, Day 1 | LIVE NOW on JioHotstar Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 2, 2025advertisementJaiswal, fresh from a century at Headingley, looked in ominous touch once again. Intent on making up for a poor outing in the field — including a dropped sitter of Ben Duckett on 97 that proved costly — the 22-year-old took the attack to England's bowlers. His aggressive approach left Josh Tongue, the pick of England's bowlers in the first Test, reeling as he leaked 42 runs in his first six vs England, 1st Test Day 1: Live UpdatesBut just when Jaiswal seemed set for another big knock, it was Stokes who had the final say — a captain leading by example, both in fire and in the toss, the sight of boundary ropes being brought in noticeably caught the eye at Edgbaston, sparking murmurs about conditions being tailored for run-fests. India, meanwhile, rang in three changes. With pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah rested, Akash Deep was handed a debut. Sai Sudharsan made way for Washington Sundar, while Nitish Kumar Reddy replaced Shardul Yadav was once again overlooked, with India opting for a second spinner in the form of batting all-rounder Washington. IND vs ENG: Backfires! Rishabh Pant falls into Ben Stokes' trap, throws wicket away with reckless shot

Rishabh Pant (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: Rishabh Pant 's ultra-aggressive style has often drawn both admiration and criticism, and on Day 1 of the second Test at Edgbaston, it backfired spectacularly. India were beginning to settle into a strong position, but Pant, who had just started looking comfortable, threw away his wicket in a moment of misjudged bravado. The dismissal came in the 48th over of India's innings, a moment that swung momentum England's way. Shoaib Bashir, the young off-spinner, was in the middle of a tidy spell when he floated one up invitingly at 74kph. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Pant, sensing an opportunity to put pressure back on the bowler, went for a big hit over long-on. But the delivery was a touch fuller and slower than expected. Pant didn't get under it properly, and the ball went flat and hard straight to Zak Crawley at long-on. The dismissal left Shubman Gill visibly frustrated at the non-striker's end as India lost their fourth wicket against the run of play. Pant's shot selection suggested he was lured into a trap meticulously set up by Ben Stokes and Bashir — a flighted bait that the flamboyant left-hander couldn't resist. Given the rhythm Pant was in and his recent form, the shot was all the more disappointing. Pant had been in exceptional touch leading into the second Test. Pant now sits just behind the likes of Joe Root and Harry Brook, trailing the top spot by only 88 points. It's a return to familiar heights for the 26-year-old, who had previously reached the fifth spot in 2022. Elsewhere in the rankings, Yashasvi Jaiswal retained his No. 4 position, while Shubman Gill dropped to 21st. Among bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah continued to dominate the charts with 907 points, ahead of Rabada and Cummins. Ravindra Jadeja remained the No.1 all-rounder despite a quiet match. Pant's dismissal at Edgbaston, however, was a reminder that brilliance needs balance — something he'll look to restore in the remaining matches of the series.
