Rocking on: How GemLife's musical residents are making life sing
When you think about retirement, what comes to mind? For GemLife Gold Coast resident Guy Scruton, it's starting a three-piece rock band dubbed The Gemtones. The best part? He doesn't have to imagine it – he's already living it. 'The Gemtones get together every Wednesday afternoon, but these days we're also meeting on weekends, so the community can come down and enjoy their time with us,' explains Scruton, who performs out of his garage alongside bandmates Trevor Rix and Mark Parry. Although he dabbled in music all his life, it wasn't until Scruton and his wife Cathy moved to GemLife Gold Coast, a luxury over-50s resort in Pimpama, mid-last year that he picked up the keyboard and saxophone once more. When Scruton discovered that Rix, his next-door neighbour, sang and played guitar, and that Parry, who lives across the street, was also learning guitar, sparks began to fly. 'Rehearsing became a feature in the street,' Scruton says. 'People within earshot would come and sit down with their eskies, then people from other areas got wind of it and started coming too. We've now performed for larger celebrations like Christmas, New Year's Eve, Australia Day, Melbourne Cup and Easter.' While The Gemtones may have found fame as a garage band, the trio (who cover hits from the 1950s through to the 2000s), will soon take centre stage at GemLife Gold Coast's new multimillion-dollar Country Club. 'We'll start doing rehearsals there and once a month we'll rock on in the club, so everyone gets to dance and have a good night,' Scruton says, adding that the band has become quite the social movement. 'Creating new friendships has been a delight,' he says. 'We all have different stories and interests and come from different walks of life, but we're all like-minded people.'

Supermodel Paulina Porizkova, 60, proudly shows off her body in unfiltered snaps: ‘This is me'
Paulina Porizkova is proudly showing her figure – minus the filters – at age 60. The supermodel shared two snaps of herself on Instagram on Tuesday, highlighting the differences between one photo with a flattering angle and good lighting, and another photo without. 'This is me. Vacation, pretty light, posing for a shot,' she said of the first picture of her in a white bikini standing in front of a picturesque view. 'This is also me,' she shared of the second picture of herself in a nude bra and underwear in a bathroom, rocking grey hair. 'Home, not great light, not posing.' Porizkova admitted to experiencing ups and downs over the years when it comes to diet and exercise. 'This is 60. This is 60 years of sometimes healthy eating, sometimes not. 60 years of sometimes working out, sometimes not,' she wrote. '60 years of doing the right things followed by doing the wrong things and over again and again,' she continued. 'It's 60 years of learning of what works and what doesn't. And just as I think I've figured it out, everything changes and I have to start again.' Porizkova shared what she has learned to accept at this stage in her life. 'The beauty of 60 is that now I understand the importance is IN the lesson, not passing the exam,' she noted. The Swedish model, who is a spokesperson for Estée Lauder, has spoken out about ageing before. 'I feel like we're so scared of wrinkles,' Porizkova said during an appearance on the US Today show in January. 'Have you noticed that? We're so terrified of wrinkles because I suppose wrinkles make us no longer relevant, no longer sexy, no longer desirable, and as women, that has been sort of our calling card — it's tagged with us for such a long time.' 'And I keep looking at wrinkles — mine, yours, any woman that I see — and I think, 'It's your map of life,'' she continued. 'I see how you are as a person. Why would you want to erase it? Why do we make wrinkles on the same par as acne?' Earlier this month, the mother of two got engaged to producer Jeff Greenstein, six years after the death of her husband, Cars frontman Ric Ocasek. Porizkova and Ocasek married in 1989 and welcomed two sons together — Jonathan, 31, and Oliver, 27 — before announcing their separation in 2018 after 28 years of marriage. He died in 2019. She and Greenstein, who was the showrunner of Will & Grace, went public with their relationship in May 2023.

Aussies flock to Bunnings at 6am as Bluey gnomes back on shelves
Bunnings stores across the country have been flooded with shoppers at 6am after the retailer brought back a cult-item that Aussies are seemingly very desperate to own. The hardware chain has once again transformed stores in Australia and New Zealand into 'Hammerbarn', a fictional DIY store featured in the popular childrens TV show, Bluey. As well as rebranding shop fronts and hosting Bluey -themed kids DIY workshops and scavenger hunts, Bunnings is selling a limited-edition product range – including the garden gnomes based on the show's characters which sparked a mad frenzy last year. However, the $19 figurines – dubbed 'husbands' in one Bluey episode – are already out of stock in some Bunnings stores, leaving many customers disappointed. 'Went at 6am and it was a fight to get one,' reported one shopper on Facebook. 'There was a rush at 6am in Kirrawee, they are all gone now,' another added. As one commented: 'I missed out last year, am going to try my luck later.' 'I hope you've got plenty of stock of 'husbands'. Last time, there were wails and tears of disappointment when tiny customers asked the Bunnings staff to help them 'find a husband' and they had sold out,' declared someone else. Bunnings said that in order to avoid customers bulk-buying the limited edition product, it had introduced a purchase limit of 4 gnomes per customer. But it appears to have done little to stop those hoping to cash-in on the item's popularity, with many of the gnomes already appearing on eBay with asking prices as high as $1000. This time around there are 7 different characters available, including 3 new additions – Gerald and Bride and Groom Gnomes, which Bunnings said it was 'expecting to be hot property'. 'It's clear how much fans connect with the show given how quickly last year's Bluey gnomes flew off the shelves,' Justine Mills, Bunnings General Manager Marketing, said. 'We know they will be eager to build on their collections, and we're excited to see how customers respond to our new range and in-store activities.' Other items available in the beloved collaboration include Hammerbarn branded socks, key rings, bucket hats and kiddo's tote bags that are available across all stores, while stock lasts. While some haven't been lucky enough to snag a 'new husband', a nickname earned after a scene showing Bingo picking up a garden gnome in Hammerbarn and declaring the figurine her future betrothed, those who have aren't shy in sharing their joy online. 'Secured some goodies this morning,' one wrote on a video shared by Bunnings. 'Got myself a 'new husband' at Bunnings this morning,' bragged another. As one added: 'So excited, I finally got the Bluey Hammerbarn gnomes from Bunnings, couldn't believe when I saw that they were back.' Others warned the highly-sought after figurines were 'extremely delicate', urging others to be careful. 'I wish they were proper concrete gnomes, they're so fragile,' one shared. 'Dropped mine in the carpark and it shattered into a million pieces,' warned another, alongside a photo of the 'devastating' scene.
