Cole Palmer stars as Chelsea stun PSG 3-0 to win Club World Cup final
PSG were the favourites for a game attended by Donald Trump after coming to the United States fresh from winning the UEFA Champions League and having destroyed Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-finals.
But having been three goals ahead midway through the first half in the semis, this time the roles were reversed as PSG found themselves 3-0 down by the break.
Palmer opened the scoring midway through the first half and struck again to make it two on the half-hour mark, before taking advantage of passive defending to set up Joao Pedro for the third on 43 minutes.
A bad day for PSG was summed up when Joao Neves was shown red following a VAR review four minutes from the end for pulling Marc Cucurella by the hair off the ball.
It was a scoreline that few could have predicted as Chelsea capped what has been a long but memorable season -- they are the first ever winners of the 32-team Club World Cup having also won the UEFA Conference League and finished fourth in the Premier League.
They will also take away around $125 million in prize money, meaning the prospect of a drastically curtailed summer break before returning for next season will surely feel worth it.
For PSG, meanwhile, the financial rewards are similar but there will be genuine disappointment at falling short of adding this title to their Champions League triumph and French league and cup double.
Nevertheless, conquering Europe was always the main aim this season for Luis Enrique's team, who now have exactly a month to digest this and take a holiday before returning to action in the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur.
There was a real sense of occasion at the MetLife Stadium, with the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline and with President Trump in attendance along with First Lady Melania Trump in a crowd of 81,118.
There was even the first-ever half-time show at a FIFA tournament, adding a Super Bowl feel to a final played at the home of NFL sides the New York Giants and New York Jets.
As for the football, for the second time in six weeks PSG found themselves involved in a final that quickly turned into a one-sided affair.
The club claimed a historic 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final, but here they were ripped apart by Chelsea on another hot afternoon.
Palmer almost put Chelsea ahead inside the opening 10 minutes, before PSG should have scored at the other end only for Desire Doue to try to pass to Achraf Hakimi rather than shoot inside the box, allowing Cucurella to block.
It was Chelsea who struck in the 22nd minute as Malo Gusto got the better of Nuno Mendes down the right before seeing his shot blocked by Lucas Beraldo. The ball came back to Gusto and he teed up Palmer to finish into the bottom-left corner.
Palmer has been the face of Chelsea on billboards in the United States during the tournament and he lived up to his star billing by scoring again on the half-hour.
Released on the right with PSG left-back Mendes out of position, Palmer advanced towards the box before stroking a low shot into the same corner.
Joao Pedro played a part in the build-up to that goal and the Brazilian, signed during the tournament from Brighton, then got his name on the scoresheet to make it 3-0.
Scorer of both goals against Fluminense in the semi-finals, he clipped a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma after being supplied by Palmer.
PSG had conceded a single goal in their previous eight matches and they never really looked like producing a comeback, even if Neves headed just wide in first-half stoppage time.
Substitute Liam Delap almost got a fourth for Chelsea midway through the second half, before Neves was shown red to complete a bad day for PSG.

'That's what people want to see in boxing, a bloody mess,' Fundora said ahead of Sunday's rematch. 'The only thing that was missing (in their first fight) was the knockout, but I'll be going for one this time, for sure. 'He is a warrior, a tough guy, very tough, but unfortunately in boxing, being the tough guy won't get you the win. 'I tell my dad the ones I hate are the good ones, and I hate this one. 'I am glad I can share the ring again with someone like Tim Tszyu. 'He is world class, a world champion, it's just the Towering Inferno is that much better. 'I want it more.' Tszyu is in supreme shape heading into the rematch with the 30-year-old having little issue so far with his weight cut. He is already two kilos lighter at this stage of his preparation than he was in his most recent bout in April against American Joey Spencer, who lasted just four rounds as Tszyu fought superbly to reignite his career. But Fundora's fellow countryman Crawford says Tszyu's clinical disposal of Spencer will not fully erase the mental and physical scars of his crushing loss to Murtazaliev in his Orlando obliteration. Tszyu was knocked down four times by unbeaten Russian monster Murtazaliev (23-0) in three rounds of brutality that raised questions over his ability to fight back from such a heavy defeat. Crawford, widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound pugilist in the sport today, was in talks to fight Tszyu last year before the Australian finalised a world-title shot with Fundora. Nicknamed 'Bud', Crawford, unbeaten with 41 wins in a stellar 17-year pro career, says Tszyu is at long odds to get even with Fundora. 'In boxing anything is possible, but Fundora is the favourite for me,' Crawford told this masthead. Fans fume as father of NFL star Amon-Ra St. Brown goes viral for ‘breeding' theory
The father of Detroit Lions wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown made waves online while discussing his sons' personal lives, specifically saying they should have children with Black women in order to 'breed' better athletes. John Brown and his wife, Miram, who is white, have three sons, including Equanimeous and Osiris, both of whom were Division I athletes. 'You can't keep cutting that blackness … My sons, I'm like, 'Man, you're all half black and half white. So you better try to marry a black girl because you want some athletes … because if not you gotta know what it is. 'You need a volleyball girl, like [5-foot-9] … African-American, oh yeah. The fallout to Donald Trump's chaotic appearance at the Club World Cup continues with the US President accused of stealing a medal. The leader of the free world had already caused a stir when he ignored Chelsea players and remained on the stage during the club's celebrations following a 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Monday. Footage of Chelsea star Cole Palmer's perplexed facial expression at the sight of Trump on the victory dais has gone viral in the past 24 hours and there was no hiding captain Reece James' frustration with Trump's presence when he was preparing to hold the silverware aloft. The 79-year-old was seen handing out many of the medals during the procession of players walking onto the stage alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The pair then handed the trophy over to James. It is an unwritten rule for politicians and dignitaries to leave the stage at that point to give the team their moment to shine, but the 47th President of the United States remained on stage with a beaming smile, — even pumping his fist while players began chanting a club anthem. With snipers and security agents stationed around the stadium, Trump appeared to be gestured away from the stage initially by Infantino, before an incredulous James, 25, was seen asking him, 'Are you staying?' The Republican leader had also inadvertently blocked the view of Golden Ball winner Palmer, who had a confused look on his face as he was also seen asking James, 'What's he doing?' Marc Cucurella was also seen staring inquisitively at Trump and then started laughing when James appeared to ask him to leave. Vision taken by spectators in the stadium showed FIFA President Gianni Infantino eventually walked into the middle of the stage to escort Trump out the back behind the players. There was more drama to come as Infantino quietly handed Trump a champions medal on the side of the stage while players were celebrating. Trump didn't appear to care too much as he put the item inside his jacket pocket and walked off the stage. A ten-second video of Trump's act has gone viral on social media with many fans suggesting the President had stolen the medallion — however, those claims have proven to be false, judging by extended footage shared online. It wasn't the worst moment for Trump. He was loudly booed as he walked onto the field following the game. He had also been jeered by some sections of the crowd when he was shown on the big screen inside the stadium. According to the BBC, there was one more round of booing as Trump left the field. Speaking after the game, Palmer, 23, and James both admitted they were surprised about the turn of events. Palmer told the BBC: 'I knew he was going to be here but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy so I was a bit confused, yeah.' Captain James added to Sky Sports: 'Before they told me he (Trump) was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage. 'Then I thought he was going to exit the stage but he wanted to stay.'
