A refurbished iPhone or Macbook could save you a lot of money — but there are some things you should consider.
If you're in the market for a new tablet or laptop, grabbing a refurbished device saves you money and can reduce electronic waste. Yet, when buying second-hand, there are some extra things you want to consider. To help you on your tech journey, we spoke to tech repair experts about how to shop for new-to-you gear.
First things first: Get clear about what you're looking for. According to Mohammad Shaikh, owner of The Tech Guys in Richardson, Texas not all second-hand tech is equal. 'Refurbished' does not mean the same as 'used,'' Shaikh told HuffPost. 'Refurbished devices are professionally restored to a functional and cosmetic standard, often with warranties, whereas used devices are sold as-is.'
Within the refurbished world, you'll likely see sellers or retailers classify quality in levels, which can differ from seller to seller. Harding notes that your local computer repair shop likely sells refurbished tech and even suggests checking out electronics recyclers (which he says you can find on Google). Amazon has created its own categorization for its refurbished product program, Amazon Renewed.
On Amazon Renewed, refurbished products are rated from 'acceptable' (a fully functional device with potential light cosmetic damage and at least 80% of the original battery life) all the way up to ' premium,' a superior functioning device with no scratches or signs of cosmetic damage and at least 90% of the original battery life. (If you're shopping off Amazon, Andy Harding of Massachusetts Salem Techsperts advises to look out for 'business-class' devices, which are 'the best in the industry.')
Sam Schiff, a tech repair expert based in New York City said, 'If you're on the fence, try to consider what you'll use the device for. Most users don't need the latest and greatest machine for basic tasks. As long as the device is coming from a reputable supplier with a good return policy, buying refurbished is pretty low risk and can help save the planet and a bunch of money!'
Amazon
Schiff also suggested researching the specific year and model you're thinking of getting. Like cars, some years and models of certain tech have had recalls or major issues. A quick reddit search can likely show you if other users have had issues. Harding also suggests looking at potential repairs the device may need, battery replacement prices, storage, system upgrade options and factoring in how long you plan to have this item.
After ensuring the device listing is 'refurbished' the experts recommend looking at the return policy and warranties. 'Spend time researching the seller, device and available reviews,' Shaikh said. 'Make sure you're purchasing from a reputable source to avoid scams or poorly refurbished products.' Seller and return policy info is easily available on Amazon Renewed — you'll find it right under the 'Add to Cart' and 'Buy Now' buttons. Simply click on the seller name, where you can read reviews and learn more about the seller.
Amazon Renewed has a network of qualified sellers that inspect, test and clean products before listing them on the site's marketplace. These tech products are protected by the site's Renewed guarantee, which includes a minimum 90-day window in which you can return your purchase for any reason, and receive free troubleshooting support for any claims.

Promising review: "This refurbished MacBook Air is a fantastic deal. I'm in between jobs and needed a reliable laptop for job applications. In the past, I've opted for Chromebooks as budget-friendly options, but this MacBook is a significant upgrade. It's faster, better quality, and the added bonus of accessing iMessage is incredibly convenient. Apple's older models often hold up really well, and with new versions constantly being released, the prices on these older ones drop, making them a great buy. I did experience an issue with a previous order that malfunctioned, but the return process was smooth and hassle-free. Although the condition was listed as 'acceptable,' the laptop I received only has a small scratch, and the battery life is solid. To top it off, the shipping was impressively fast—arriving in Hawaii much quicker than I expected! Highly recommend this option for anyone looking for quality on a budget." — V

Nothing's Android 16 update will arrive before the end of the quarter as Nothing OS 4.0

Nothing TL;DR Nothing has confirmed that its Android 16 update will reach users by September. Nothing OS 4.0 will likely debut on the newly launched Phone 3 before rolling out to older models. Nothing Phone 2 and newer models will receive the update, but the original Phone 1 is not eligible. Thanks to Google releasing stable Android 16 for its Pixel lineup earlier than usual, several OEMs are expected to ship their Android 16 updates ahead of schedule this year. Samsung will likely debut One UI 8 based on Android 16 with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. Nothing has also confirmed that it will follow suit by releasing Nothing OS 4.0 much earlier. During yesterday's Phone 3 launch event, Nothing announced that although its new flagship will ship with Nothing OS 3.5 based on Android 15, Nothing OS 4.0 based on Android 16 will 'arrive in Q3 2025.' We suspect the platform upgrade will first reach the newly launched Phone 3, before rolling out to older models. Nothing Phone 2 and newer models will receive the Android 16 update, but the original Phone 1 is not eligible for the release. At the moment, Nothing has not shared the exact release timeline for these devices. We expect the company to share all details closer to the rollout. We have little information about the features and improvements that could arrive with Nothing OS 4.0, but it's safe to assume that it will include all the significant changes included in Android 16. Nothing will likely test beta builds with select users ahead of the stable release, which should give us a better idea of what's new in the update. Got a tip? Talk to us! Amazon rolls out a stricter performance review process — with culture as a key metric

Amazon is leaning harder on its "Leadership Principles" to rate employee performance, as CEO Andy Jassy continues to create a more disciplined workforce at the tech company. Starting this quarter's mid-year review cycle, Amazon managers will use a three-tiered system to evaluate how effectively corporate employees demonstrate the company's core values in their work, according to an internal document obtained by Business Insider. Although the Leadership Principles have long been central to Amazon's culture and considered in performance reviews, this is the first time they've been formally embedded into the evaluation process. Amazon relies on its 16 LPs, which stress things like customer focus and cost discipline, to guide nearly all business decisions. As part of this shift, Amazon is streamlining the rating scales for the other two evaluation criteria ("performance" and "potential"). Together with how employees use LPs, these factors determine an Overall Value (OV) score for each corporate employee, which influences future raises and whether they may be placed on a performance improvement plan. The internal guideline said the changes will "improve our ability to identify top talent and further strengthen our culture." It added that only 5% of the employees will be eligible for the top "role model" grade when measuring their LP behavior. "By making Leadership Principles a formal input to Overall Value ratings and increasing the granularity of the input rating combinations, the updated process helps us strengthen the connection between performance and culture," the guideline added. The move is part of a wider wave among tech giants to rethink how they manage performance and reward employees. Microsoft has a new 2-year rehire ban on ousted underperforming employees. Both Google and Meta have also made policy changes that better reward high performers this year. More discipline The initiative demonstrates Jassy's ongoing commitment to cultivating a more rigorous workforce and a more cohesive corporate culture. In the past year, Jassy has enforced a full return-to-office policy, reduced management layers, and updated its pay model to better reward top talent. Last year, he also shared a video series explaining each LP, and recently warned that AI will reduce Amazon's workforce because of efficiency gains. Amazon's spokesperson Sam Stephenson told BI that the company regularly reviews its performance review process to "ensure it best supports the growth and development of our employees." "Our unique culture, which is rooted in our Leadership Principles, drives the innovation we deliver for customers each day," Stephenson said. "These changes streamline the process for managers and help to ensure greater consistency." 'High-judgment' decision Amazon's performance review policy has long been controversial. Some employees have cited concerns over limited oversight and the potential for misuse, with one former employee describing the system as " predatory and opaque." Some people have also criticized Amazon's cutthroat "stack-ranking" culture, in which a fixed percentage of the workforce is replaced every year. Amazon managers group their employees in five broad buckets of performance tiers: Top Tier (TT), Highly Valued 3 (HV3), Highly Valued 2 (HV2), Highly Valued 1 (HV1), and Least Effective (LE). Teams with more than 50 employees should categorize 20% as TT, 15% as HV3, 25% as HV2, 35% as HV1, and 5% as LE, the internal guideline said. Amazon seems to recognize the nuanced nature of performance evaluations. The internal guideline urges managers to dedicate sufficient time to reviewing each employee to ensure accurate assessments. "Evaluating employees is a high-judgment decision," the guideline said. "You should invest sufficient time in gathering comprehensive and objective feedback to ensure accuracy and minimize unconscious bias."
