'Allies' depart with Christian Horner as Red Bull sack three key figures
Horner was in tears on Wednesday morning after travelling to the team's Milton Keynes factory to deliver the news to a stunned 1500-strong workforce. "The decision came as a shock to myself," he said.
"I have had a chance to reflect over the last 12 hours and I wanted to stand in front of all of you to break this news and just express my gratitude to each and every single member of the team that has given so much during the 20 and a half years that I have been here. Being part of this team has been the biggest privilege in my life."
Joining Horner in leaving Red Bull are two of his closest 'allies' in Hughes and Smith. According to reports, Smith was involved in a heated row with Jos Verstappen after son Max finished fifth in the most recent Grand Prix at Silverstone. Jos was reportedly unhappy with the way Smith had been communicating with the media.
Verstappen Sr had previously declared Max would leave Red Bull and join rivals Mercedes unless Horner departed. Max paid tribute to Horner on Tuesday night, saying: "From my first race win, to four world championships, we have shared incredible successes. Winning memorable races and breaking countless records. Thank you for everything, Christian."
Max Verstappen won a fourth-consecutive world championship in 2024, but has failed to confirm whether he'll see out the remainder of his current deal that runs until 2028. His fifth-placed finish at Silverstone continued a disappointing run of recent results.
Big Horner guys, makes sense.

two huge Horner supporters, always backed him whenever something went wrong so not surprised 😳

At the season-ending Bahrain Grand Prix last year, Horner was cleared of wrongdoing following an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct. Hundreds of WhatsApp messages - appearing to be exchanged between Horner and the complainant - were then leaked to the F1 world.
Horner - married to former Spice Girls singed Geri Halliwell - had managed to keep the Red Bull hierarchy onside and fought on. He's always denied the claims and was exonerated for a second time of controlling behaviour by an independent Kings Counsel last August.
He had maintained the backing of Thai businessman Chalerm Yoovidhya - Red Bull's majority owner - but Yoovidhya was noticeably absent from a charity event held before Silverstone last week, hosted by Horner and his wife Geri. According to the UK Telegraph: "Yoovidhya backed Horner for as long as he could but has clearly decided things can no longer go on as they are."

Horner lost a number of key allies along the journey, with design guru Adrian Newey, chief designer Rob Marshall and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley all departing. Red Bull Group CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said on Tuesday: "We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years. Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history."

Bid to make HMO lawful that 'plays crucial role providing affordable housing' in city
An application has been submitted to Newport City Council for a lawful development certificate for a house in multiple occupation (HMO). The planning application was submitted by Mr Fernando Enrique Mendoza Contreras on June 6 this year for a lawful development certificate for a long-standing HMO at 4 Fields Road in Newport. The application seeks legal recognition of the property's use as a C4-class HMO. Mr Mendoza Contreras said the property has operated as a HMO since at least October 12, 2013. This is before the introduction of Class C4 under Welsh planning regulations in 2015 and well before Mr Mendoza Contreras acquired the property in 2018. The applicant said the property is run responsibly, with shared facilities and private rooms for tenants. Weekly safety inspections are carried out by an estate agent, and the property complies fully with housing and safety regulations. Mr Mendoza Contreras said: "The HMO plays a crucial role in providing affordable housing for students, young professionals, and individuals referred by local authorities." "No complaints have been received from neighbours since 2018. "We manage tenancy agreements properly, maintain strong community relations, and support tenants in achieving their personal goals." Upon consultation with local authority representatives, Mr Mendoza Contreras was advised to apply for a lawful development certificate to clarify the legal use of the property. In support of the application, the applicant has submitted a copy of his Rent Smart Wales landlord licence which was granted on June 19, 2018, and was valid until June 18, 2023, with the property now under the care of an estate agent. The licence confirms his compliance with the Housing (Wales) Act 2014 and adherence to the national Code of Practice. No objections have been reported as part of the application to date. A decision from Newport City Council is pending.

Derby gets tough on HMOs after refusal on 'free-for-all' estate
Plans to move more residents into a 'filthy' Derby estate have been quashed after it was claimed the number of HMOs in the area had 'gone too far'. More than 50 people signed a petition against plans for another house of multiple occupation (HMO) to be allowed in the New Zealand ward. The plans submitted called for a rear extension so a property could house six individual occupants on Howe Street. The street is part of an estate where there are serious concerns regarding its appearance, fly-tipping, bins left on streets and parking. The rejection is one of the first signs seen publicly that Derby City Council is getting tougher on HMOs after long campaigning, which triggered new rules to come into force. Officers said a 'lack of communal space for residents would result in a significantly harmful impact on the quality of living environment for occupiers'. Earlier this year a new Article 4 Direction came into force following major concerns that a high concentration of HMOs were causing problems such as fly-tipping and parking. The Article 4 direction, which was approved by the Government, aims to give Derby City Council more control and powers in regulating HMOs. Before the new rules came in, any HMO of up to six occupants was allowed as permitted development. But now those of any size within certain areas must require planning permission. Howe Street resident Sally Bareham told the planning committee the area was 'filthy and neglected' and another HMO was not needed. She said: 'We have 86 private landlords in the area, mainly short-term lets vacating regularly, leaving messes. Unless you live here you can't imagine how depressed we are watching more family homes being sold cheaply to landlords because the area is so filthy and neglected.' Come in the evening and you will see how bad the parking situation is.' And fellow ward councillor Ndukwe Onuoha said: 'The community has become a free-for-all for HMOs. It's gone too far and residents are feeling it.' The committee refused the plans without much discussion. Chair of the planning committee Councillor Jerry Pearce said the decision was 'straightforward' before the vote took place. The applicant or a representative for the planning application did not speak at the meeting. We send out the biggest stories in an email every day. ThyssenKrupp Modernizes Hot Rolled Strip Mill
Via Metal Miner German flats producer ThyssenKrupp Steel recently commissioned a modernized strip mill at its main site in Duisburg as well as new upstream equipment. On July 4, the steel industry titan released a statement detailing that the modernized hot rolled strip mill will be able to roll 3.1 million metric tons of hot rolled coil in widths of 900-1,600mm and in 1.2-9mm gauges. 'The new units are located at the interface between upstream operations and hot strip production, making them a core feature of the integrated production network in the northern part of Duisburg,' the company noted. 'The reconfiguration that has now been completed will not only raise quality by increasing casting and rolling capacities, but will also improve capacity utilization of the upstream basic oxygen steelmaking plant 1.' Further upstream, TKS has commissioned a new continuous caster to produce slab in a 257mm gauge and in 900-1,800mm widths, as well as in lengths exceeding 35 meters. The German company stated that the walking beam furnace will be able to handle 380 metric tons per hour for cold application and 560 metric tons per hour for direct application. ThyssenKrupp officials noted that investment in the modernization of the hot strip mill and the acquisition of new equipment totaled €800 million ($942 million). According to the release, 'All new systems are characterized by a high degree of automation and state-of-the-art control systems, for example, enabling real-time monitoring of the production press through the use of digital twins.' Back in November, ThyssenKrupp announced plans to cut its workforce and production capacities, citing structural changes in the European market as well as a need to improve productivity and operating efficiency. As a steel industry leader, the firm also referenced its desire to achieve a more competitive cost level. According to information from the company, the personal cuts entail reducing positions by about 40%, bringing the total of 27,000 positions down to 11,000. The group also plans to reduce its annual production capacity by 23% from the current 11.5 million metric tons per year to a future target dispatch level of 8.7-9 million metric tons. It is likewise important to note that a Czech holding company, EP Corporate Group, acquired a 20% stake in TKS in 2024.
