Head coach Gautam Gambhir and some players were seen assessing the Dukes ball as India stepped onto the field of Lord's to begin practice for the five-Test series against England.
The Indian cricket team has begun its practice for the five-Test series against England, stepping onto the fields at the iconic Lord's on Saturday (June 7). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared snippets from their sessions on Sunday morning, sharing what they called the 'first sight' of the side getting into the groove.
The clip included shots from London and Lord's, before taking us to the indoor facilities of the stadium, where the team engaged in some stretching and warm-up football. Soon, the players stepped outdoors and were seen engaging in running and fielding practice. The most interesting thing in the clip was how head coach Gautam Gambhir, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, and others were deeply assessing the Duke's ball.
The Duke's is used for Tests in England and behaves quite differently from the SG ball used in India and the Kookabura cherry deployed in Australia. The English ball has a more pronounced seam and a thick coating of laquer, which promotes swing for longer than usual — sometimes till the 30th over.
I am always under pressure: Gambhir
This series will be a big test of Gambhir's tactical acumen in Tests, having overseen big losses against New Zealand at home and Australia away. In the pre-tour press conference, he accepted that he has always been under pressure but denied feeling any extra for this tour.
'I am always under pressure," he said. 'Regardless of whether I would've won the Champions Trophy or not. Because being the coach, you want the results. It does not change with winning or losing,' Gambhir said. 'I am always under pressure irrespective of whether we got the results or not. If you had asked me this question after New Zealand, I would have said 'yes, I am under pressure'. After Australia, I would have said 'yes, I am under pressure',' he explained. 'After winning the Champions Trophy, I am still under pressure because me being the coach, you always want the results. Every game you are part of this team, you want to get the results for the country as simple as it can get,' he said.
India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC, WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

JLN Stadium on track to meet deadline before Para World Championships

With less than three months to go for the World Para Athletics Championships, set to be held in India for the first time, preparations at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium are progressing swiftly, with the base layer of the new Mondo synthetic track already laid. Officials remain confident of meeting all deadlines ahead of the crucial inspection by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and World Athletics scheduled for late August. "We should be able to meet the deadline comfortably before the final inspection by the International Paralympic Committee and World Athletics," a top official privy to the developments told PTI Videos on condition of anonymity. "Our target is to secure the clearance certificate at least a week before the championship begins," the official added. The 12th edition of the World Para Athletics Championships will be held from September 27 to October 5. The Mondo prefabricated synthetic track is being installed by Shiv Naresh. The track, which is made of vulcanized rubber, absorbs shock and reduces fatigue with its elasticity and uniform dynamic response, helping athletes maintain their posture, stride length and rhythm. The same surface was used at the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics. The existing synthetic track at the JLN Stadium was last re-laid in 2021. However, the venue's overall condition had deteriorated in recent years, with broken seating, open drains, and poor maintenance. Officials assured that a comprehensive overhaul is underway. "The seats will be changed before the tournament, that's already in the plan. There's a separate budget for renovating the entire stadium. You'll see a completely revamped look before the meet starts," the official said. Simultaneously, work on the warm-up track is advancing, with new foundations and pit markings under development. "It's all in sync -- both the main field and warm-up areas are being developed simultaneously," the official added. The upcoming championship is expected to be a landmark event for Indian para-sport, and the successful completion of venue upgrades will be key to its smooth execution.

Praggnanandhaa beats World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen to score big win at Freestyle Chess in Las Vegas

Teenage Indian chess prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa maintained his streak of strong performances in 2025, registering a landmark victory against world number one Magnus Carlsen on Wednesday night. Serving another reminder of his adaptability and flexibility across all formats of chess, the young Grandmaster secured the victory at the crucial Freestyle Grand Slam chess event in Las Vegas. Playing with white pieces, Praggananandhaa dominated over the senior player with a strong display of his skills, especially in the last six minutes of the game. The win scored the chess prodigy an outright lead in his group at the tournament and cleared way to a quarterfinal standing. Praggnanandha clinched the joint lead in the White Group on 4.5 points after 7 rounds, indicating his progress was safe. While Praggananandhaa is no stranger to big wins against Magnus Carlsen, last night's victory was special as it signalled a comeback after a disappointing ninth place finish during an earlier leg in Paris. Alongside Pragg, Arjun Erigaisi also won from the Black Group by seeing himself in a strong third place. The event carries a total prize pool of $750,000 with $200,000 reserved for the winner. Each group has eight players in the line up and the top four will advance to the next stage while the bottom half will play against each other. World champion D Gukesh is going to give the event a miss as he will be playing the main event of the Grandmaster tour in about a month's time. Freestyle chess is a new name given to Fischer random chess or chess 960 where the position of the pieces is randomly changed at the start of the game. With little theory in the books, the version is gaining popularity as tame draws out of the openings have vanished and there are usually a lot of fighting games right from the beginning.

BCCI-PCB meeting in Singapore? Asia Cup 2025 discussion reportedly set for ICC AGM sidelines

The Asia Cup 2025, which will take place in the T20 format as a preparatory tournament for the T20 World Cup 2026, is pencilled in to take place in September with India being the hosts. However, the future of the 2025 Asia Cup has been up in the air since April's Pahalgam terror attack in India, resulting in 26 deaths, and the retaliatory attacks by India through Operation Sindoor, as they destroyed multiple terror camps in Pakistan. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Asia Cup 2025 future remains in limbo Since then, there have been reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was unwilling to take part in a tournament that is hosted by a body headed by a Pakistani. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is headed by the current Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi. However, that claims have been since refuted by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. 'Since this morning, it has come to our notice about some news items about BCCI's decision not to participate in the Asia Cup and Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup, both ACC's events,' Saikia said. India's participation in matches against Pakistan has been regulated by the Indian government in recent years, with the two neighbouring nations only competing against each other in ICC tournaments in cricket. The last bilateral series between the two countries was played in 2012-13. All of these point towards India boycotting the Asia Cup 2025. But considering the money riding on the tournament, it's quite possible that India and Pakistan get ready for the tournament eventually. Asia Cup media rights were acquired by Sony Pictures Networks India from 2024 to 2031 at a base price of $170 million. In case India do not take part in the tournament, ACC and Sony Sports are set to face massive losses. India-Pakistan cricket meet in Singapore? The report also added that the Asia Cup 2025 will take place in the United Arab Emirates if it' not cancelled. However, if India pull out of the tournament, there's a good chance the tournament will be cancelled.
