
Everyone hates wasps. But this scientist wants us to love them.
Hatred of wasps goes back thousands of years — Aristotle denigrated them as 'devoid of the extraordinary features' which bees possess. But Seirian Sumner, professor of behavioral ecology at University College London (UCL), wants to show there's more to wasps than meets the eye. She has devoted her career as a zoologist to studying the insects; she has written a book on them, and even her Instagram handle is 'waspprof.'
She was involved in the recently opened World of Wasps exhibition at the UCL Grant Museum of Zoology in London, which hopes to 'reveal the unseen lives of wasps.' Speaking to CNN from the exhibition, Sumner gave her top five reasons why we should all love wasps as much as she does.
Pest control
'Wasps are nature's pest controllers. A world without wasps would mean that we would be inclined to use more chemicals to control the populations of the other insects and creepy crawlies that we don't like: caterpillars, aphids, spiders, beetles – you name it – there is a wasp that hunts it. So wasps are really important top predators in regulating all of those insect populations within the ecosystem.'
Pollination
'Bees sting and yet we tolerate that because we know what they do. We understand that they're important in ecosystems as pollinators. Wasps are equally important.
'Just like bees, they visit flowers to get nectar. Although they hunt, the prey is for their offspring, it's not for the adults themselves. They need to get some nutrition from somewhere, and they get that from flowers through nectar, just like bees do.'
Medicines
'Some (wasp) venom may potentially be a cure for cancer. (Indeed, one study has shown that a Brazilian wasp can kill cancer cells without harming surrounding healthy cells.)
Wasps also have lots of antibiotic in their venom and on their bodies that they use to keep their prey disease free. We should start tapping into the microbial defences that wasps have.'
Food
'Wasps are a popular source of nutrition for humans around the world. Particularly in Asia, people love to eat wasps. They will boil up the larvae or freeze dry the pupae, mix it with a bit of chili – nothing is better. They're really high in protein, low in fat and there are even people in parts of the world who actively farm wasps in order to produce enough of these juicy, amazing larvae to eat because they're such an important source of food.'
Paper makers
'They are supreme paper makers, and there is the idea that we got the idea of how to make paper by watching wasps.
'Most people have seen a wasp collecting a little bit of bark from a tree stump or a fence post. They mix it up with their saliva and smooth it out into this beautiful, thin paper that they then use to construct these huge football-sized societies that they live within.
The paper inside these nests is truly remarkable. There are three different types. On the outside, you've got this envelope which is quick and dirty for them to build. Inside you've got the combs that are strong but light, like the layers inside a high-rise building. The combs are then strutted together with a third type of paper, which is really strong and squidgy. If you try and pull it apart with your hands, you simply can't do it. All of that just inside a single wasp nest.'
Bonus point: A model society
'(The polistes paper wasp) is like the insect version of a meerkat. Unlike the yellowjacket wasps and the honeybees, where (individuals) are committed during development to become a queen or a worker, these guys, when they hatch as adults, the whole world is their oyster.
'They can be a queen, they can be a worker, they can start life as a worker and switch to be a queen. That's just like a meerkat society where you have breeders and then you have non-breeders who will be looking out for predators or go out foraging. Everyone is helping together, and this is exactly what these (wasps) do.
'They help us understand the evolution of altruism, why any individual should give up its chance to reproduce in order to help another reproduce. These wasps have been really important in understanding why animals come together to live in groups.'

‘Wavy Dave' is a beefy-armed robot crab on a mating mission
A tiny robot fiddler crab is helping environmental scientists better understand the complexities of animal mating rituals and rivalries. And while their initial findings published August 5 in Proceedings of the Royal Society B are helping solve these ecological mysteries, the data was only obtained at considerable peril to 'Wavy Dave.' Male fiddler crabs are engaged in a constant, literal arms race. The males are known for asymmetrically sized pincers, with a dramatically larger major claw compared to its smaller one. The reason for this sexual dimorphism is mainly twofold—mating and fighting. Female fiddlers generally opt for the male with the largest major claw, which the latter advertises by waving it at potential partners more quickly than his competitors. Meanwhile, aggressive suitors will often use these oversized appendages to duke it out if they feel threatened. Biologists have long wondered if male fiddler crabs adjust their claw choreography when the field gets crowded. But it's not like they can simply ask crustaceans to vary their claw dances on command, then record the results. 'We know many animals adjust their sexual displays if rivals are nearby, but less is known about how they react to the actual displays themselves,' said Joe Wilde, an environmental scientist at Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland (BioSS). While at the University of Exeter, Wilde and colleagues at the institution's Center for Research in Animal Behavior (CRAB, coincidentally) decided to further explore the subject. And boredom may have been the necessity of this crab-bot invention. During the COVID-19 lockdowns in spring 2020, Wilde began to teach himself how to use 3D printers. At one point, he came across online fiddler crab schematics, which he then adapted for a tiny machine that could wave its claw via Bluetooth controls. Thus, Wavy Dave was born. Fast forward about five years. Wilde and collaborators took Wavy Dave on a trip to the beaches of southern Portugal, where thousands of fiddler crabs live in oceanside mudflat burrows. There, they placed the robot roughly a foot away from actual male crab residences. They waited for the crustaceans to emerge, and recorded the interactions as Wavy Dave greeted them at various claw speeds. In general, the male crabs responded by waving their own major claws for extended periods of time, and were less likely to retreat into their holes if their appendage was larger than the robot's. That said, Wavy Dave's speed didn't seem to influence the speed of the fiddler crabs. Wilde's team theorized the male crabs likely reciprocated the robot's claw movements because they took them as a cue that a female was nearby. In order to conserve energy, the real crabs only quickened the pace if they saw the females firsthand. 'If you own a shop and your rivals start selling things really cheaply, you might have to change how you run your business,' said Wilde. 'The same might be true for males signaling to attract females–and our study suggests males do indeed respond to competition.' According to the study, male fiddler crabs appear to adjust their behavior in subtle ways during these dynamic, competitive mating environments. They will only put in additional energy when they believe it's most rewarding. But while Wavy Dave elicited valuable new data on crustacean behavior, the robot wasn't quite as successful in the mating market—and in at least one instance, it suffered at the claws of a rival. 'The females realized he was a bit odd, and some of the males tried to fight him,' Wilde recounted. 'One male broke Wavy Dave by pulling off his claw. Expert Says Collapse of Human Civilization Looks Like the Most Likely Scenario
New research is warning that the most likely outcome is that human civilization is poised for collapse. As The Guardian reports, a sweeping new historical survey that analyzes 5,000 years and the collapse of more than 400 societies makes the case that we're in for a rude awakening. "We can't put a date on Doomsday, but by looking at the 5,000 years of [civilisation], we can understand the trajectories we face today — and self-termination is most likely," Luke Kemp, research fellow at the Center for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge, told the British newspaper. "I'm pessimistic about the future," he added. "But I'm optimistic about people." Kemp warned of narcissistic and psychopathic leaders — a powerful but small "oligarchy" working against the interests of the rest of us — who turn a blind eye to existential threats like global warming, nuclear weapons, and AI. Scientists have long warned that escalating global temperatures caused by human activities could eventually tip us over the edge, leading to food shortages, unbearable heat, and droughts — not to mention the strain and instability that all those problems place on everything else. To Kemp, we can learn from thousands of years of human civilization to get a sense of how things will eventually play out. In his book, he used the term "Goliaths" to refer to kingdoms and empires that dominated others using weaponry and other threatening tactics. "History is best told as a story of organised crime," he told the Guardian. "It is one group creating a monopoly on resources through the use of violence over a certain territory and population." But these groups don't tend to last and eventually collapse under their own weight due to inequality, the researcher argued, and greed by those in power. "Then as elites extract more wealth from the people and the land, they make societies more fragile, leading to infighting, corruption, immiserization of the masses, less healthy people, overexpansion, environmental degradation, and poor decision making by a small oligarchy," he said. "The hollowed-out shell of a society is eventually cracked asunder by shocks such as disease, war or climate change." So how does this all pertain to the 21st century specifically? Kemp argued that we're suffering under "one single, interconnected global Goliath," acting within capitalism. Collapses in food systems, the constant threat of nuclear war, and a growing climate crisis could eventually lead to the current Goliath's demise. And Kemt didn't hold back when singling out the leaders responsible for bringing us closer to the end. "The three most powerful men in the world are a walking version of the dark triad: Trump is a textbook narcissist, Putin is a cold psychopath, and Xi Jinping came to rule [China] by being a master Machiavellian manipulator," he told the Guardian. To avoid a total collapse, we need to "create genuine democratic societies to level all the forms of power" and tax the wealthy — which isn't actually as out-of-reach as it sounds, according to Kemt. "Today, people find it easier to imagine that we can build intelligence on silicon than we can do democracy at scale, or that we can escape arms races," he said. "It's complete bullsh*t. Of course we can do democracy at scale. We're a naturally social, altruistic, democratic species, and we all have an anti-dominance intuition." "This is what we're built for," he added. The mental health impact of childhood verbal abuse explained in new study
Verbal abuse of children could be as damaging to their mental health in adulthood as physical abuse, researchers have found. A study of more than 20,000 adults in England and Wales found that people exposed to verbal abuse in childhood were likely to feel disconnected, pessimistic, and emotionally unwell in later life. Adults who were physically abused as children had a 52 per cent higher chance of experiencing low mental wellbeing, and this stood at around 64 per cent for those who had been subjected to solely verbal abuse. Being exposed to both types of abuse compounded the risk even further, at 115 per cent higher, the study led by Liverpool John Moores University found. While verbal abuse did show as having a marginally higher impact in this study, the researchers said the difference was not statistically significant and that further studies would be needed perhaps with a larger sample size to confirm the validity of the difference. Lead author, Professor Mark Bellis, who is director of research and innovation at the university, said: 'Our research shows that verbal abuse in childhood may inflict mental health scars as deep and enduring as those caused by physical abuse. Important progress has been made in reducing physical abuse, but verbal abuse is often overlooked.' The study, published in the BMJ Open, also suggested the prevalence of verbal abuse has risen in recent decades 'eroding the long-term mental health benefits we should see from reducing physical abuse'. The authors worked alongside Bangor University and Public Health Wales to pool data from seven relevant studies, involving 20,687 adults from England and Wales and looking at birth cohorts from the 1950s onwards. They found that the prevalence of child physical abuse halved from around 20 per cent among those born between 1950 and 1979 to 10 per cent among those born in 2000 or later. But when it came to verbal abuse, the prevalence rose from 12 per cent among those born before 1950 to around 20% among those born in 2000 or later. The researchers said an estimated one in six children endure physical abuse, primarily from family members and caregivers, but one in three are subjected to verbal abuse. Jessica Bondy, founder of Words Matter, an organisation focused on ending childhood verbal abuse by adults said: 'This study confirms what survivors and professionals have long known: words can wound deeply and have a lasting impact on a child's mental health and development. We all get overloaded sometimes, but too many adults are turning to harsh words without realising the lasting damage they cause to children. 'Any gains made in reducing physical abuse risk being undone by rising rates of verbal abuse. We must act now to confront the lasting harm caused by cruel, critical or controlling language. We need to build children up – not knock them down. The mental health of the next generation and our shared future depend on it.'
