Popular TV presenter Scarlette Douglas"hates flying" - because she was supposed to be on a doomed plane which crashed and killed more than 200 people.
Although she hosted Channel 4 show A Place in the Sun for seven years, Scarlette dislikes air travel after her friend died when Air France Flight 447 crashed into the mid-Atlantic Ocean. All 228 people onboard, including Scarlette's mate, lost their lives in the global tragedy in June 2009.
And Scarlette, who was on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2022, was meant to be on the Airbus A330. Her friend booked both their spaces but Scarlette had a job in Hollywood so didn't travel in the end.
The 38-year-old presenter, from Enfield, north London, made the heartbreaking remark at the Taste of London Food Festival opening party in Regent's Park this week. Speaking to a Daily Mail reporter, she said: "I lost a really good friend of mine in the Air France crash from Brazil to France. The scary thing was I was supposed to be on that flight. She had booked it."
Scarlette says she "hates flying" as a result, a challenge during her role on A Place in the Sun. She hosted the programme and its various spin-offs between 2015 and 2022, before her I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! stint.
The star was asked about flying in the wake of the Air India plane crash, which saw all but one of those onboard the Boeing die in a horror crash. Some 53 Brits were killed after the plane, destined for Gatwick Airport, collided into a medical college in Ahmedabad, western India.
Although the investigation into the crash continues, an aviation expert has claimed the co-pilot pulled the plane's wing flaps instead of retracting the landing gear moments after take-off.
But inconsistent airspeed indications and miscommunication led to the pilots inadvertently stalling the doomed Air France plane, on which Scarlette's friend travelled in 2009. They failed to recover the plane from the stall, and the plane crashed into the mid-Atlantic Ocean.
The investigation was hampered because the aircraft's flight recorders were not recovered from the ocean floor until May 2011, nearly two years after the accident. Eventually, the final - and conclusive - report by France's Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA) was published on July 2012.
The majority of those onboard the four-year-old Airbus were Brazilians and French citizens. However, five tragic Brits died in the atrocity, including 11-year-old boy Alexander Bjoroy, oil worker Graham Gardner and PR executive Neil Warrior.

Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days." It adds: "If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years." Greece is among 26 European countries in the Schengen area, which includes popular destinations such as Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Portugal, as well as non-EU nations like Iceland and Switzerland.

Hollyoaks anniversary scripts rewritten as ideas scrapped and 'surprises' ahead
More than one Hollyoaks star told us bosses had made a number of changes to plans for the Channel 4 soap's 30th anniversary episodes, with scripts redone and storylines altered Cast of Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks have been kept in the dark about most of the soap's 30th anniversary plans, with many of the ideas apparently "rewritten" as the show goes all out for the big event. According to more than one star of the soap, bosses have "gone back to the drawing board" and made a few changes to original plans. The show celebrates 30 years on air in October, with planning underway for an unmissable set of episodes. While one star of the show promised "shocking twists" and "big" scenes ahead, another cast member spilled that plans had been changed a couple of times, with bosses wanting to go all out to make the 30th a huge one for fans. According to the star, scripts have been edited, with the suggestion that ideas had been scrapped to make way for bigger and better twists and turns ahead. Another cast member backed the changes to the plans originally laid out, claiming she'd been told that the plans for the anniversary had "changed a few times". But it seems the plans are now all, if not mostly, set in stone with cast soon to find out exactly what is in store for them in the coming months. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Mercedes McQueen actress Jennifer Metcalfe was the first star to admit there'd been some changes where the 30th plans were concerned. She told us that she'd heard behind the scenes how plans had been changed more than once. She teased: "I say don't tell me cos I am a blabbermouth so I say don't tell me the storylines. But I don't know yet what's happening with it, I've heard they've changed their minds a few times but that's all they are telling us." Rex Gallagher actor Jonny Labey also said about the script and plan changes, telling us: "For the 30th it was announced there would be some fan involvement! To be honest we have had a lot of script editing and it's been back to the drawing board with some of the ideas. "But it's all solidified now, the ideas are in place. We have got some time until October. The next couple of months we will start knowing a bit more and preparing for the 30th. "They are always gonna go big and the way the storylines are going at the moment, they are really powerful stuff, beautiful stuff, and amazing work from everyone, so it's on good trajectory. The 30th is a big year!" Myra McQueen actress Nicole Barber-Lane didn't know too much, but she's thrilled to be back with the show and for the soap to still be on air 30 years on from the launch. She said: "I don't know what is gonna be happening, but it is important to celebrate how long we have been here. "Sometimes we put so much pressure on stuff but it doesn't need it. I don't know details but I know Hannah [Cheers, Hollyoaks' Executive Producer] has some big stuff lined up." We also got some big spoilers from Lucas Hay actor Oscar Curtis and Dillon Ray actor Nathaniel Dass about what fans can expect. Oscar spilled: "We can't say what happens but we can say it's gonna be exciting." Nate then told us: "Listen, we hear things in and around the building. We hear some amazing stuff, and there is some really amazing stuff in store for Hollyoaks fans. "I think something that happens is gonna actually be quite shocking. It is something to do with the show itself and to do with the characters. There is some really exciting stuff coming up, but we can't say what. "I can promise you there's gonna be some big surprises." Oscar added: "It's the 30th... you know what I mean?" Nate then teased: "I know for a fact the top dogs have some amazing stuff planned." Sunday Brunch's Tim Lovejoy addresses major change to show after Channel 4 panic
Tim Lovejoy has hosted Sunday Brunch since its inception in 2012 and recently talked about why hosting gives him peace after the programme announced a major shake-up Sunday Brunch's Tim Lovejoy has revealed how Channel 4 staff were worried when they found out he would be presenting the show solo. Tim, 57 and a seasoned co-host with Simon Rimmer on the popular programme, occasionally finds himself without his partner due to scheduling conflicts or illness. Speaking to Steven Sulley's podcast, Sunday Brunch star Tim recounted the unease surrounding his first solo stint: "The first time I just was. Most of the time Simon's been ill it's hasn't really happened much in the years we've been working together. "But when it happened before it would generally be a couple of days before... so they would then go 'Let's get in somebody else' so I'd have a new co-presenter for the day and that happened a lot." In reflection, he discussed the rarity of handling the show alone and the initial concerns from others: "I think I've done it only three or four times on my own completely and the first time it was just people going, I remember them panicking: 'Can he do it on his own?' "The idea that someone would do a whole three-hour entertainment show on their own, and then now they just go: 'He's ill, you're doing it'. "Now I just love it. I love the fact they can trust me to do it. I just love live TV. I'm more comfortable on TV than I am in real life." Discussing his affinity for live TV and the sense of comfort and catharsis it brings, Tim shared his personal insight into why he finds it so appealing, reports Birmingham Live. He explained: "For some reason I just find it really comfortable. If you do any kind of zen practice, mindfulness, always about living in the present, don't live in the past. "When you're doing a three-hour live TV show you're living in the present, we're enjoying it because we're living in the living it and it's so rare that you get to live in the present." Tim's reflections from a podcast two months ago have taken on new significance following his recent decision to take a hiatus from a show he has been part of since 2012. Stepping into Tim's shoes is the 37-year-old TV host Vicky Pattison, who expressed her excitement on Instagram about her new role. "As a long time friend of @sundaybrunchc4 it is an absolute HONOUR to be wearing a slightly different hat this week! I will be joining my good pal @rimmersimon as his co-host while the lovely @timlovejoy_official has a very well deserved break! ! ! "I am buzzing like an old fridge to chat to all of our gorgeous guests, eat some delicious food and hopefully give anyone watching and nursing a hangover a bit of light comedy reprieve."
