India's title drought on the BWF World Tour came to an end on Sunday as Ayush Shetty delivered a commanding performance to lift his maiden title at the US Open Super 300. The 20-year-old from Mangalore outclassed third seed Brian Yang of Canada 21-18, 21-13 in the men's singles final, while teenager Tanvi Sharma's exciting run to the final ended in a defeat to Beiwen Zhang of the United States.
Shetty, a bronze medallist at the 2023 Junior World Championships, capped off a stellar week that included a gritty comeback against top seed Chou Tien Chen in the semifinals. The Indian, seeded fourth, showed poise and precision in the final, securing victory in just 47 minutes for his third career win over Yang, having also beaten him earlier this year at the Malaysia and Taipei Opens.
The contest began evenly with both players locked at 6-all, but Shetty pulled ahead with a string of winners to lead 11-6 at the mid-game interval.
Though Yang rallied to level the score at 16-16, Shetty regained control with a series of smart placements and closed the first game with a decisive jump smash.
In the second game, Shetty raced to a 7-2 advantage, and while Yang momentarily threatened a comeback, the Indian maintained his rhythm. Leading 17-12, Shetty sealed the win with a crisp cross-court punch and a powerful smash—securing a title that had eluded him in previous finals at the 2023 Odisha Masters, 2023 Bahrain International, and 2024 Dutch Open.

Tanvi Sharma at the 2025 US Open
Meanwhile, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma impressed onlookers with her resilience in her first BWF World Tour final, taking a game off top-seeded Beiwen Zhang of the USA before falling 11-21, 21-16, 10-21 in a 46-minute battle.
Zhang dominated the opener with an 11-5 lead that Sharma couldn't bridge. However, the Indian youngster responded in style in the second game, racing to a 4-0 lead and maintaining her edge with aggressive play and precise shot-making to force a decider. The effort seemed to take a toll, though, as Zhang raced to an 11-4 lead in the final game and closed out the match without further resistance.

Richa Ghosh Creates History, Becomes Fastest Batter In The World To...

Last Updated: Plenty of milestones were reached during India's 24-run win over England in the 2nd T20I held in Bristol on Tuesday. India wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh continues to set new benchmarks. On Tuesday, as Richa top-edged a short delivery from England's Laurn Filer for a boundary in Bristol during the second T20I, she became the quickest batter in the women's T20I to complete 1000 runs in terms of balls faced. The 21-year-old took 702 deliveries to cross the milestone of 100 runs in women's T20I. Overall, she now has 1029 runs from 64 T20Is (53 innings) at a strike-rate of 143.11. Ghosh also holds the record for the joint-fastest half-century in women's T20I history alongside Sophie Devine and Phoebe Litchfield with each having taken 18 deliveries to do so. Among the women's batters with 1000 or more career runs in T20Is, Richa's strike-rate of 143.11 – is the highest. Overall, Richa is the seventh Indian batter to score 1000 or more runs in the format. Meanwhile, India have become the first team to beat England in a women's T20I in Bristol. The hosts had won each of their previous five matches at this venue. This is also the first time that England have lost two matches in a five-match bilateral series. Batting first, India posted a challenging 181/4 in 20 overs after recovering from 31/3. Amanjot Kaur (63*) and Jemimah Rodrigues (63) scored half-centuries for the tourists. Amanjot, who recorded her maiden T20I fifty, followed her superlative effort with the bat by taking 1/28 from three overs as England were kept to 157/7 as India took a 2-0 lead in the series with a 24-run win. India had recorded a big 97-run win in the series opener with stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana hitting a maiden century. It was England's biggest defeat in the format's history (in terms of run-margin). 'It's new Indian team. Wherever we play, home or away, we are ready to dominate. That was our plan and we did that today," Amanjot said after being adjudged player of match. The third match will be held on July 4 at The Oval in London. First Published: July 02, 2025, 10:53 IST

India's reported changes for Edgbaston Test: Bumrah to be replaced by this pacer; Sai Sudharsan set to be dropped

The second Test between India and England gets underway at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Wednesday. And following their disappointing five-wicket defeat at Headingley, the Shubman Gill-led visitors are likely to make several changes to the lineup. read more Jasprit Bumrah and B Sai Sudharsan are likely to sit out of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Reuters/AP After an enthralling series opener in Leeds where the first Test between India and England boiled down to the final hour of the final day at Headingley, the two teams are set to lock horns once again, with the second Test set to get underway a few hours from now. While cricket fans will be hoping for another humdinger of a contest between the two giants of Test cricket at Birmingham's Edgbaston, which will be hosting the second of five Tests starting Wednesday, the Indian cricket team and their fans will be hoping to end up on the right side of the result this time. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ahead of toss on the opening day of the second Test, we take a look at some of the team changes Shubman Gill is likely to announce at the toss: Bumrah out, Akash in Both Jasprit Bumrah as well as head coach Gautam Gambhir had already discussed the former's workload during the tour of England, wherein he would not be playing more than three Tests keeping his recent back injury in mind. Shubman Gill is reportedly set to name Akash Deep as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement in the second Test. Image: AFP Given the short turnaround between the second and third Tests at Edgbaston and Lord's respectively, Bumrah was reportedly rested for the second and is being kept fresh for the third. With Bumrah reportedly out, India were left with Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh, the latter yet to make his Test debut, or play Kuldeep Yadav as the lone front-line spinner. According to a report on The Indian Express, Akash is set to be named as Bumrah's replacement for the second Test, meaning Arshdeep might have to wait a bit longer for his maiden Test cap. Thakur out, Reddy in This was a no-brainer for the Indian team after the events of the Headingley Test, where Thakur not only failed to make a meaningful contribution with the bat, he also leaked runs at over five an over in both innings and did not make an impact with the ball until his double strike in the afternoon session on the final day. Nitish Reddy was consistent with the bat in the tour of Australia, scoring a century in the fourth Test in Melbourne, and the team management will be hoping his presence lends more solidity to the lower middle order and prevents another batting collapse. And the Express report mentions he's set to be included in place of Thakur at Edgbaston, despite the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin coming to the latter's defence despite the defeat at Headingley. Sai Sudharsan out, Nair at No 3 This one might sound harsh for young Sai Sudharsan, but the young opener from Tamil Nadu is set to be dropped after making his debut at Headingley, where he was dismissed for a four-ball duck in the first innings before departing for 30 in the second. Karun Nair reportedly is set to move up the batting order after getting dismissed for 0 and 20 at Headingley. Image: Reuters The report, however, adds that it's Karun Nair who's set to move up the order to the position previously occupied by current skipper Shubman Gill – and Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahul Dravid before him. Nair's reported move frees up a slot in the middle order – where the team management is reportedly drafting in Washington Sundar. Which means India will have spin-bowling all-rounders Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja as well as Reddy between the top five and the tail-enders – which skipper Gill and coach Gambhir hopes translates to meaningful partnerships down the order.
