Loan sharks harass Ipoh teacher over ex-husband's debts
Lau Yoke Khee, 42, said she has received death threats and photographs of her children have been circulated on social media.
"On April 28 at about 4pm, one of the loan sharks, known as Calvin, contacted me and asked me to bear the debts incurred by my ex-husband.
"He also threatened to murder me and my children, ages between 10 and 17.
"I've also received many threatening calls from him saying that he would disturb me at my workplace as well as circulate pictures of me and my family on Facebook," she said at a press conference held by Perak MCA public service and complaints bureau chief Charles Yuen here on Wednesday (April 30).
"I told him that I would not pay as I have divorced from my ex-husband, Lau Kok Kin, 50, an insurance agent and part-time food deliverer.
"However, Calvin said that Kok Kin told him that I'm not his wife, but a rich mistress who would pay off his debts," she added.
She said Kok Kin owed multiple loan sharks a total of about RM10,000.
"Each time the loan sharks call, they would ask me to pay between RM1,000 and RM10,000.
"I confronted Kok Kin and he admitted to the debts he incurred and even included a list of loan sharks' contact numbers and the amounts he owed," she said, adding that a police report has been lodged against the loan sharks.
"I want to let everyone, including the loan sharks, know that my ex-husband's debt is unrelated to me and I will not be responsible for them," she added.
Yuen said he has contacted the police investigating officer for the case.
"The police are trying to identify the person behind the threats.
"The family are very afraid now as their faces have been exposed on social media," he said.
"They are feeling traumatised, as they still have to go to school and face their friends and also worry about their safety.
"I hope the family will no longer face any threats," he added.

Lorry driver killed in predawn crash on NSE
MUAR: A 46-year-old lorry driver was killed in a predawn crash involving two heavy vehicles at Km144 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) early this morning. Initial police findings suggest the lorry had abruptly switched from the left to the right lane, leading a Hino lorry travelling in the same direction from Penang to Johor Baru to crash into its rear. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the Hino lorry driver, 42, attempted to brake but collided with the rear right corner of the Nissan, causing it to veer off to the left side of the highway. "The Nissan driver sustained serious internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hino driver and his 42-year-old passenger escaped unhurt," he said in a statement today. The case is investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. He urged witnesses to contact investigation officer Inspector Khairun Izham Noor Yusry at 013-9121508 or visit the Muar district traffic police station to assist in the probe.

MMEA's STAR team praised for heroic PDRM helicopter crash rescue
JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's Special Task and Rescue (STAR) team has been commended for their rapid and effective response following the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) helicopter crash in Sungai Pulai. Their swift action ensured all five Air Operations Force (PGU) members were rescued without fatalities. The MMEA highlighted the team's efforts in a Facebook post, praising their courage and professionalism. 'The team, led by Maritime Lieutenant Nur Mohd Farhan Mohd Hamil, demonstrated exceptional bravery in rescuing all victims despite challenging conditions,' the post stated. The incident occurred at 10.15 am during the Multilateral Nuclear Security Detection Exercise (MITSATOM) 2025, a joint operation involving Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore. The AS355N helicopter, registered as 9M-PHG, crashed near the Gelang Patah Maritime Jetty after departing from Tanjung Kupang Police Station at 9.51 am. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), the helicopter carried five individuals, including the pilot. Two officers were reported in critical condition, requiring respiratory support at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA). RM1.2 million drug bust in Kota Kinabalu, man arrested

Kota Kinabalu: A 23-year-old local, believed to be part of a drug syndicate, was arrested following three separate police raids around the city, resulting in the seizure of more than 20kg of various narcotics worth RM960,000. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the operation, conducted by the Kota Kinabalu Narcotics Crime Investigation Division on July 4, began with a raid on a condominium. Officers found 790.56gm of suspected methamphetamine (syabu), along with a money-counting machine, a digital scale and drug packaging tools. The following day, a second raid on another rented condominium uncovered 14.14gm of suspected ketamine. Acting on information from the suspect, police then inspected an abandoned vehicle in a parking lot, which led to the discovery of a suitcase containing 12.7kg of syabu, 6.9kg of ketamine and 25 packets ecstasy juice and 10 ecstasy pills. Jauteh said the drugs were likely intended for both local consumption, especially at entertainment venues, and distribution to neighbouring countries. He added that the suspect is believed to have been actively involved in drug trafficking for the past year. Assets worth RM240,000 suspected to be linked to drug activities were also seized, bringing the total value of the seizures to RM1.2 million. The suspect remains in custody and is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. On the narcotic trafficking trends, Jauteh said drugs are typically smuggled into Sabah via sea cargo for large quantities and air transport for smaller consignments. 'This is based on patterns observed over the past five years,' he said, calling for stronger collaboration between enforcement agencies and the public to curb drug threats, especially those involving cross-border smuggling. 'We need comprehensive cooperation from all stakeholders responsible for the movement of goods in and out of Sabah. 'Once drugs enter Sabah, the police can act, but prevention must start before entry,' he said. Jauteh encouraged community involvement in combating drug abuse, saying residents should report any suspicious activities if they are unable to intervene directly. 'Everyone has a role, whether offering guidance or reporting to the authorities.
