Stepping up Sabah's chicken output

Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 By: Garry Lewis Text Size: Jeffrey (second, left) in a group photo at the event. TAMBUNAN: Broiler chicken farming has been elevated as a key pillar of Sabah's Agricultural Revolution, in line with efforts to ensure food security and boost rural incomes. Deputy Chief Minister cum State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said this initiative represents one of the State Government's primary strategies to make Sabah Malaysia's largest broiler producer. 'The government, through my ministry, is currently implementing the Agricultural Revolution initiative to strengthen the rural economy. One of our main focuses is increasing broiler production,' Jeffrey said after launching the Broiler Farming Course attended by some 200 participants from rural areas. The programme was organised by a private farming company in collaboration with the Sabah Veterinary Services Department here. Jeffrey said the course, conducted with cooperation from the Department of Veterinary Services and private sector partners, aims to provide systematic training to participants to make chicken production more organised and productive, including technical assistance for coop preparation and chick supply. He encouraged youths and agricultural entrepreneurs to participate in this sector to ensure broiler farming can be developed intensively on a commercial scale. 'With continued support from relevant agencies, I am confident that broiler farming can become the main driver of Sabah's food security and contribute to the state's rural economic development,' he said. At the same ceremony, Jeffrey presented RM10,000 in financial assistance to the Tambunan District School Sports Council, which will host the State-level School Sports Council Championship on June 29. The State Government remains committed to strengthening the agricultural sector through various assistance programmes and training initiatives, aiming for Sabah to achieve its target of becoming the nation's primary broiler production hub in the future. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Misled on Haj package' claim

Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: According to Sapariah, the losses included return MAS flight tickets between Tawau and Kuala Lumpur, excess baggage charges for domestic flights in Saudi Arabia, and expenses for frozen food and other necessities—with some items supported by receipts and some without. TAWAU: The Consumer Claims Tribunal has fixed July 24 for the hearing of a case in which a female teacher is claiming RM10,000 in compensation from a company that offered a Hajj package. Tribunal President Larina Wong Shiao Yee said the claimant, Sapariah Muhammad, filed the claim against Tripz HR Sdn Bhd on May 14, 2025. In her claim, the teacher alleged that the company had misled her with the Hajj package it offered. She had paid for a Hajj worker visa and a Haji Tasreh visa package but was only issued a tourist visa. Despite paying for the worker visa package, Sapariah claimed she received only a tourist visa before departing from Tawau. She also alleged that the company misused the tourist visa for the purpose of performing Hajj. Furthermore, the claimant said she felt manipulated and deceived after being instructed to lie about her true purpose of travel to Saudi Arabia, both at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and upon arrival in Riyadh. She incurred losses amounting to RM10,000, as not all payments were refunded after she cancelled her trip while at KLIA. According to Sapariah, the losses included return MAS flight tickets between Tawau and Kuala Lumpur, excess baggage charges for domestic flights in Saudi Arabia, and expenses for frozen food and other necessities—with some items supported by receipts and some without. The teacher had initially paid a total of RM37,305 for the Hajj package, which included payments to the company's account, the agent's account, and other related expenses. However, she only received a partial refund of RM27,305. She was originally scheduled to perform the Hajj and Ziarah pilgrimage from May 17 to June 28, 2024. Meanwhile, the company's legal adviser, Hanif Osman, requested a new mention date to allow time to review the documents and claim details submitted. Larina then fixed July 24 as the next hearing date and instructed both the claimant and respondent to attend with any relevant witnesses or supporting documents. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? JOHOR BAHRU: Youths are urged to seize the golden opportunity to venture into the growing pineapple industry and become a key contributor to the country's agri-food sector. Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali said youth participation could inject fresh ideas to advance the industry and sector to greater heights. "Youth involvement can generate lucrative income for themselves and inject new ideas to elevate this industry, especially in adapting technology including the Internet of Things (IoT), mechanisation and modern approaches," he said at the 2025 Malaysian Pineapple Day celebration here today. Also present at the event was Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. Sheikh Umar also reiterated LPNM's aspiration to target an income of RM10,000 for farmers under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). He said that according to unofficial data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the pineapple industry this year is projected to yield returns of up to RM8,000 per farmer. Regarding today's programme, he shared that the Malaysian Pineapple Day celebration themed 'Our Pineapple, Our Pride' today was being held for the first time to coincide with World Pineapple Day, observed annually on June 27. He said the event aims to celebrate pineapple farmers and industry players as well as commemorate the board's existence since 1957. Therefore, he hoped that the celebration would further energise the agri-food sector which contributes to the national economy. "This tropical fruit is certainly not a staple food but it can contribute to the balance of trade of the country's food sector which currently shows imports exceeding exports," he said, stating that the event will be held biennially. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Risda Carnival 2025 targets 10k visitors with 60 local delicacies

KUALA LUMPUR: The Rasa Asli Desa Risda Carnival 2025 kicked off today, running until June 30, with organisers targeting over 10,000 visitors. The event features 28 entrepreneurs from 13 states presenting more than 60 types of local culinary delights. Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) Datuk Rubiah Wang highlighted the ministry's support for rural entrepreneurs, particularly smallholders under the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda). 'Programmes like this not only add value in terms of marketing and sales, but also provide a real space to strengthen brands, business matching and market network development for rural entrepreneurs,' she said during the launch at Wangsa Walk. Rubiah noted that many participating entrepreneurs earn between RM5,000 and RM10,000 monthly, with some already recording RM1,000 to RM2,000 in sales on the first day. She expressed confidence in achieving the carnival's RM200,000 sales target. Themed 'Rasa Tulen, Sentuhan Istimewa' (Authentic Flavours, Special Touch), the event blends tradition with creativity, featuring dishes like kek lapis, rendang maman, and gulai temenung. Noorazlina Saramali, a 32-year-old entrepreneur from Beaufort, Sabah, shared her enthusiasm for introducing Sabahan specialties like kelupis and kucong to urban visitors. 'Kelupis is glutinous rice cooked with coconut milk and steamed in the same way as kucong, but kucong has a peanut filling flavoured with shrimp. I want to introduce kelupis to the people of Kuala Lumpur because this food is rarely available here,' she said. Siti Hajar Husnan, 39, from Negeri Sembilan, brought Johor's burasak and lepat loi, typically seasonal treats now available year-round thanks to retort processing. 'Actually, this is a seasonal food, but when we process it using the retort method, it can last up to a year and can be eaten anytime. We also sell it online on Shopee and TikTok, good thing there is always demand,' she said. The carnival also features the RisSMart 24 brand stall by Risda Agri Food Sdn Bhd (RAFI), offering pastries, wagyu skewers, and tom yam bowls. Additional activities include traditional cooking demos, a nostalgia-themed night showcase, and a kids' beauty pageant.
