Author Dame Pat Barker thought honours letter was income tax bill
Dame Pat, 82, became a CBE in 2000 and is being given her damehood, one of the highest honours in the United Kingdom, for services to literature.
The Booker Prize winner has published 16 novels, diving into anti-war themes including trauma and memory.
Describing the moment she received the news of her damehood, she said: 'I picked up the envelope from the carpet and the first thing I noticed, what beautiful quality paper it was, and I thought, this is either the income tax getting really angry, or it's something from the Palace or the Cabinet Office.
'Nobody else does that kind of quality of paper. I still sort of had to read the first paragraph several times before it sank in.'
Her debut novel, Union Street, was published in 1982 and won her the 1983 Best Of Young British Novelists award.
It was later made into the film, Stanley And Iris, starring Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro.
She added: 'One of the things that, in spite of everything, I like about the British honour system is the way it records people who do very low profile, working for free, long hours, weeks, months, years, for something that they genuinely believe in and usually unpaid, and for the benefit of other people, and they are the bedrock of the honour system, and they actually are the reason why it is so respected, and knights and dames are just cherries on the top of that cake.
'I am happy to be a cherry.'
The author is known for exploring the effects of war in her novels, attributing her grandfather and stepfather as inspiration for some of her most popular books.
She said: 'I was very much a war baby. My Victory in Europe Day was my second birthday, and I thought the street parties were for me, as any two year old would.
'I think in my family, there were people who bore the very visible mental and physical injuries of war.
'My stepfather, for example, was in the trenches at 15, my grandfather had a bayonet wound, and he used to get stripped off at the kitchen sink, and the bayonet wound was terrible, very obvious, and he never talked about it. So you've got the two things there that are essential for writers, a story that is obviously present, but which isn't being told.
'The last thing any writer needs is a completed story. What you need as a writer is a mystery. And I had that.'
She began writing the Regeneration trilogy in 1991 with the first book following English Lieutenant Billy Prior as he is being treated for shellshock.
The book was adapted into a film in 1997 which starred The Two Popes actor Jonathan Pryce and Maurice's James Wilby.
In 1993, Dame Pat published the second book in the trilogy, The Eye In The Door, which follows William Rivers, the psychiatrist treating Prior at Craiglockhart Hospital in Edinburgh.
She was awarded the Guardian Fiction Prize that same year and in 1995 won the Booker Prize for Fiction for The Ghost Road, the third book in the trilogy, which recounts the final months of the war from alternating perspectives of Billy, as he is about to rejoin the war, and William, who grapples with the work he has done to help injured men at the hospital.
More recently, the novelist was shortlisted for The Women's Prize For Fiction in 2019 for her book, The Silence Of The Girls, part of The Woman Of Troy trilogy, which recounts the lives of women living through the Trojan War.
It is followed by The Women Of Troy (2021) and The Voyage Home (2024), and sees the author shift her storytelling both in its genre, from historical fiction to myth, and characters, writing from the perspective of women instead of men.
She said: 'I was wanting to deal with the experience of women, and specifically with rape as a weapon of war, because that is really what the Trojan trilogy, as it is at the moment, is about and that is also a very up to date, modern area of political and legal debate, making rape a war crime similar and equal to other war crimes.
'I think that is a battle that is still being fought for women in lots of ways. And that shadows the subsequent lives of women, but also of their children, who are very often the product of rape, and that is difficult for the woman and the child and the community that the woman comes from.
'So it seems as if it's thousands of years ago but actually myth isn't thousands of years ago. Myth is applicable to our lives today, and that's always what I want to bring out.'
Dame Pat was born in Thornaby-on-Tees, Cleveland, and raised mainly by her grandparents.
She began her writing career in her late 30s after studying international history at the London School of Economics and taught history and politics at colleges of further education until 1982.

This year's Booker prize longlist looks in new directions
This year's Booker judges had a crowded field to pick from, with scores of eligible books from previously nominated writers and five new novels from winners alone (John Banville, Kiran Desai, Alan Hollinghurst, Ian McEwan and Ben Okri). Of these, Hollinghurst is one eyebrow-raising exclusion, for his elegiac and beautifully composed panorama of gay life in Britain over the past seven decades, Our Evenings. But it's no surprise that the list is headed by Desai's epic The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny, a novel in the works since her Booker win two decades ago and due out this September. Clocking in at nearly 700 pages, this is a love story about two people pulled between India and the US, family inheritance and personal ambition, intimacy and solitude. Immersive and gently funny, her vast canvas painted with an exquisitely fine brush, it looks like a leading contender on a canon-building list – nine of the authors are making their first Booker appearance. There is an emphasis on family stories; sometimes intimate and direct, as in Claire Adam's account of a woman forced to give up her baby as a teenager, Love Forms, or Ben Markovits's rueful study of a father contemplating life once the kids have left home, The Rest of Our Lives, but more often as a lens through which to examine the forces of history. Susan Choi's previous novel, 2019's Trust Exercise, was a standout in American fiction; Flashlight is straighter and less playful, but scales up her ambition and breaks new ground in its examination of one family with roots in Korea, Japan and the US, illuminating the seismic effects of political upheaval on individual lives. The two debut novelists on the list respond to the forces of history with formal invention. Canadian-Ukrainian author Maria Reva begins Endling as a comic caper through Ukraine's marriage industry, from the perspective of a cash-strapped scientist with a passion for endangered snails; Russia's full-scale invasion blows the book wide open, calling into question the role of the writer and the purpose of fiction – and offering answers that are full of energy. Albanian-American author Ledia Xhoga toys subtly with realism. Misinterpretation, her portrait of an Albanian interpreter in New York, caught between two cultures and struggling with compassion fatigue and her own traumas as she tries to help others, is full of misunderstandings and missed connections that echo the faults and gaps of translation. Two slim, slippery books revel in formal disruption. Katie Kitamura's enigmatic Audition, focusing on an American actor and a man young enough to be her son, offers contradictory narratives in order to explore identity, performance, and what we are to one another: this is a book to ponder and argue over. In Universality, Natasha Brown is also interested in the power dynamics of storytelling: she constructs a merciless satire of the current media landscape, with its meretricious culture wars, through the jigsaw-puzzle chronicle of a long read that goes viral. The four remaining books are all by men, an answer perhaps to claims that male writing in the UK is in crisis, and they all do fascinating things with interiority. Jonathan Buckley writes spare, slightly Cuskian philosophical novels; in his 13th, One Boat, a woman's sorties to Greece to work through her bereavements lead into reflections on ethics, memory and the processes of thought. In Benjamin Wood's quiet but immensely atmospheric Seascraper, a young man plies his grandfather's trade of 'shanking', scraping the seashore for shrimp in an England that is moving on without him. Muted but precise prose burrows into his hopes and dreams for a tale that resonates far beyond the telling. Andrew Miller's The Land in Winter is also situated in a postwar England on the brink of change, here the 'Big Freeze' of 1962-3, and travels deep into the hearts of its characters, two young married couples in the West Country. This novel has had my heart since it was published last November, and I'm delighted to see it on the list: I think it's the best book yet from a stellar writer who's been publishing for three decades. (By contrast, this year's Booker blow for me is the exclusion of Sarah Hall; I've been telling everyone that her magisterial, millennia-spanning Helm, out at the end of August, was a likely winner.) The final title, also a favourite of mine this year, creates powerful effects through an unusual tactic: utterly refusing interiority. Flesh by David Szalay is a very modern everyman story, with his central character at the mercy of forces beyond his control, a rise and fall playing out across a depressed childhood in Hungary, life in the army and an upwardly mobile stint in on-the-make London. By keeping his antihero a mystery to the reader, Szalay opens up the biggest questions about what we can and cannot know. It feels like something that hasn't been done before in quite this way – and that only fiction could do. 2025 Booker Prize longlist revealed as 'wonderful' books left judges 'elated'
The wait is over as the Booker Prize longlist has finally been announced. Selected by the 2025 judging panel chaired by Roddy Doyle — a critically acclaimed writer and 1993 Booker Prize winner — the list is peppered with some returning favourites, a few impressive debutants, and a third-time lucky hopeful. Chosen out of 153 submissions, this year's longlist showcases outstanding works of long-form fiction written in English by authors of any nationality, published in the UK and/or Ireland between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025. Novelists of nine nationalities across four continents make up this year's longlist, with authors from the UK — namely Natasha Brown, Jonathan Buckley, Andrew Miller, Benjamin Wood, and Hungarian-British writer David Szalay — securing the highest number of nominations for their books. Indian author Kiran Desai has once again been nominated for the top honour, 19 years after her previous novel, The Inheritance of Loss, won the Man Booker Prize in 2006. Kiran's newest novel, The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny, has been longlisted this year. If Kiran wins this year as well, she will be only the fifth double winner in the coveted prize's history. Back in 2006, the Indian author became the then-younger Booker Prize winner. Kiran's mother, renowned author Anita Desai, has also been shortlisted for the prize three times in the past. Previously, his books, The Harmony Silk Factory and Five Star Billionaire were nominated for the prize in 2005 and 2013, respectively. Two past shortlistees — David Szalay, previously shortlisted in 2016 for his book All That Man Is, and Andrew Miller, shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2001 for his novel Oxygen — have also returned as nominees this year. Maria Reva's debut novel Endling and Ledia Xhoga's debut novel Misinterpretation have also made the longlist. The six-book shortlist will be revealed at a public event at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in London on Tuesday, September 23. The winner of the 2025 Man Booker Prize will be announced at a ceremony on Monday, November 10, at Old Billingsgate in London. The winner of the prestigious prize will be awarded £50,000.
