
E5 Shinkansen trains to be used for trial runs for bullet train project in FY26-27, claim railway officials
NEW DELHI: The E5 variant of Japanese Shinkansen trains will be used for trial runs in the Gujarat section of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai
bullet train project
in financial year 2026-27, railway officials have said.
India will subsequently buy the state-of-the-art E10 variants, which will be rolled out in India and Japan simultaneously.
E10 Shinkansen trains are likely to be launched in 2030.
The country's first bullet train project is progressing well, a senior railway ministry official said. 'Only Japanese Shinkansen trains will be deployed for the trial runs and then we will have the most advanced trains from Japan to run on the entire 508-km corridor,' he added.
In an official release, the ministry said: 'In the spirit of strategic partnership between Japan and India, the Japanese govt has agreed to introduce E10 Shinkansen trains in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project. E10 will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan. The entire 508-km corridor is being developed with Japanese Shinkansen technology. It will set new benchmarks for speed, safety, and reliability.
This reflects the deep strategic and technological cooperation between India and Japan'.
Meanwhile, govt has allotted the task of building two bullet trains, which can run at a maximum speed of 280 kmph, to the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and BEML. It has also bid out the signalling work for the Bullet train corridor to a joint venture of Siemens and DR Agrawal Infracon. It remains to be seen how the railways can operate E5 trains on this signalling system even for trial purposes.
The ministry said civil works for the project are progressing at a rapid pace. So far 310 km of viaducts have been constructed, 15 river bridges have been built and another four are in advanced stages of construction. Out of 12 stations, five have been completed and three more are reaching completion stage. Breakthrough has also been achieved on the first section of the 21-km undersea tunnel for the project.

At 2.1%, retail inflation falls to over 6-year low in June
Representative image NEW DELHI: Retail inflation slumped to a 77-month low in June, led by a sharp moderation in food inflation, prompting some experts to say that a rate cut in the Aug meeting of the Reserve Bank of India 's monetary policy committee may not be ruled out. Data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Monday showed that retail inflation, as measured by the consumer price index ( CPI ), rose by an annual 2.1 per cent in June, slower than the 2.8 per cent recorded in May. There was a decline of 72 basis points in the inflation of June compared to May, marking the lowest year-on-year inflation since January 2019. This is the eighth consecutive month that retail inflation has moderated. Food inflation, as measured by the all-India consumer food price index, fell by 1.1 per cent. There was a sharp decline of 205 basis points in food inflation in June compared to May 2025, and the food inflation in June was the lowest since January 2019, according to the statistics office data. Rural inflation was lower at 1.7 per cent in June compared to urban inflation, which was recorded at 2.6 per cent. "We are not ruling out the possibility of a final 25 basis points rate cut in the Aug 2025 meeting, carrying forward the front-loading seen in June 2025," said Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ratings agency Icra. She added that the agency expects CPI inflation to recede further and bottom out at 1.9 per cent in July 2025, despite an unfavourable base. Separate data released by the commerce and industry ministry showed wholesale price inflation entering the deflation territory at -0.1 per cent in June, led by a deflation in food and fuel. The negative rate of inflation in June is primarily due to a decrease in prices of food articles, mineral oils, manufacture of basic metals, crude petroleum, and natural gas, the ministry said. "Headline deflation was largely driven by deeper deflation in food and fuel WPI. Of the approximately 52 basis points fall in headline WPI year-on-year in June versus May, approximately 33 basis points (64 per cent) was on account of deeper food deflation, with another negative 5 basis points from fuel and power WPI," said a note from Barclays. 'With AI, companies are still in the very early stages of adoption. Maybe 10% of companies are starting to show signs of AI impacting the P&L. I've heard CEOs say, 'We see AI everywhere—except in the bottom line'. That sums up where most businesses are today,' he consultant said one of the CEOs he spoke with recently told him about the real impact of AI: 'Analysis will become easier, but strategy will become harder'.Currently, there's a race among consulting firms to embed AI across their workflows and make it an integral part of service delivery.
