Maha social media circular threatto democratic values: Dhanorkar
1 2 Chandrapur: Chandrapur MP Pratibha Dhanorkar has slammed the Maharashtra government's recent resolution issued on July 28 restricting social media use by government employees, calling it a direct attack on freedom of expression and a threat to democratic values. In a letter to CM Devendra Fadnavis, Dhanorkar demanded immediate withdrawal of the circular. The directive framed under Maharashtra Civil Services Rules, 1979, lays down strict conditions barring govt staff from making 'criticising the govt', engaging in 'self-promotion', and sharing confidential information online. It further mandates the separation of personal and official social media accounts, bans use of certain apps, and warns of disciplinary action for non-compliance. Calling the move 'draconian and unconstitutional', the Congress MP said the resolution seeks to silence govt employees and suppress their right to express views in a democratic setup. "This is not just a govt circular but an infringement on the constitutional rights guaranteed to every citizen, including public servants," Dhanorkar said. She argued that while protecting confidential information is important, the govt cannot 'misuse' such provisions to curb fundamental freedom. "Conditions like barring critical opinions or restricting creative expression will put undue pressure on employees and stifle their independent thinking," she said. "The circular is against the spirit of our democracy. I demand it to be withdrawn without delay in the interest of justice, transparency, and freedom," she added.

Yuri alleges multi-crore scam in which buildings are inserted in survey plans
Porvorim: Opposition leader Yuri Alemao on Wednesday alleged a multi-crore scam in the directorate of settlement and land records amounting to Rs 300 crore. Department officials inserted over 400 structures into survey plans to facilitate development in CRZ and no-development zones, he said. Alemao demanded that a judicial inquiry be ordered, headed by a retired judge, and an SIT be set up to examine this process. He said an FIR should be filed and the officials involved should be suspended. 'I demand that govt issue a white paper on the insertion of doubtful structures. These entries must be frozen, and the TCP department, panchayats and CRZ authorities should be subjected to re-verification,' he said. While CM Pramod Sawant said he would conduct an inquiry, revenue minister Atanasio 'Babush' Monserrate said that the structures included in the survey plan were reverted and govt would conduct an inquiry. He said lower staff did the mischief of inserting the structures on the survey plan. Earlier, Alemao said, 'A multi-crore land scam has unfolded... The directorate of settlement and land records... is at the centre of large-scale manipulation. This racket involves the fraudulent insertion of structures into official survey plans using BhuNaksha software.' He alleged that more than 400 structures were added predominantly in CRZ and the prime coastal belt using digital tools. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to Ease Knee Pain Without Injections or Side Effects Read More Undo These were illegally added to survey plans without physical verification or following any transparent and legal protocol. 'The going rate for one plot is said to be over Rs 1 crore for 300-400sqm plots, making this a Rs 300-crore scam. Private parties used this insertion to repair and construct by falsely presenting them as pre-existing structures,' Alemao said.

Karimnagar govt officials learn sign language to bridge communication gap
Hyderabad: In a move towards inclusive governance, govt officials in Karimnagar district are now learning Indian Sign Language (ISL) to better interact with citizens who are speech and hearing impaired. The initiative, which covers staff across various departments, aims to equip them with basic sign language skills to make public services more accessible. From common greetings and numbers to understanding days, months, and familial terms, the officials are being trained to hold simple conversations and ensure effective communication. "I've learnt the basics, but there's a long way to go. When speech- and hearing-impaired citizens approach us, they often come with someone to interpret. But when we understand them directly, it builds trust and ensures clarity," Karimnagar municipal commissioner and IAS officer, Praful Desai told TOI. "It's about meeting them on their terms, not the other way around," he added. District collector Pamela Satpathy, who is also part of the training, said, "As public servants, it's our responsibility to understand the needs of every section of society. Learning sign language is one way to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to accessing govt schemes and benefits." The sessions, conducted by two trainers from an NGO, are being organised by Dr Marri Chenna Reddy Human Resource Development (MCRHRD) Institute. According to regional training manager and district youth officer M Venkata Rambabu, around 100 officials are attending the sessions daily, split into two batches. Apart from conversational basics, the participants have also learnt to sign the national anthem.
