Kolkata: Thirty-four fishermen from Kakdwip in two fishing trawlers were allegedly detained by the Bangladesh Navy in the early hours of Monday for allegedly crossing into Bangladeshi waters while fishing in the Bay of Bengal.
According to sources, the two trawlers — FV Jhor and FV Mangalchandi — were intercepted about 77 nautical miles from the Fairway Buoy of Mongla Port in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh media reported that a Bangladesh Navy patrol vessel spotted the trawlers fishing within their exclusive economic zone and detained the crew along with the boats and fishing equipment. The fishermen are being held in Mongla, where legal proceedings have begun under Bangladesh's fisheries and maritime departments.
"They may have accidentally crossed the boundary due to natural calamity. I have asked fishermen's organisations for detailed information," said Kakdwip MLA Monturam Pakhira. "Whatever the reason be, we are informing our CM," he said.

According to Sunderbans Maritime Fishermen Union, the men on board were residents of coastal villages in South 24 Parganas. The union said they possibly lost direction due to poor visibility and rough weather.

TOI tried to contact senior officers of the Indian Coast Guard, but there was no response from their end till late on Tuesday.

Consequently, many parents fear that the absence of a PEN may disrupt their child's education. Additional Secretary (administration) of the UP Board, Satyendra Singh, explained that the PEN system is introduced primarily to facilitate seamless tracking of students' academic progress throughout their school life. However, this policy met with criticism from teachers' associations and educators. State president of the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Teachers' Union and a former Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), Suresh Kumar Tripathi opined that making PEN mandatory is inappropriate at this stage since not all students currently do not have it. The registration process for classes 9 and 11 started on July 2 and will continue until August 5. It is important to note that two years ago, the UP Board mandated the use of Aadhaar for registration in high school and intermediate exams. However, following backlash and concerns for students' welfare, the board reversed that decision, making Aadhaar optional once again.

Supreme Court NEW DELHI: Indicating that an offence cannot be said to be a terror act only if an accused is convicted under an anti-terror law, Supreme Court on Tuesday said creating an atmosphere of fear to prevent people from taking the side of law by killing an army informer is also a terrorist act despite anti-terror law not being invoked in the case. A bench comprising Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and S V N Bhatti did not agree that the killing of three civilians, including the army informer, in J&K with an AK-47 was not a terror act because the conviction was not secured under an anti-terror law, and expressed its reservation in entertaining a remission plea of a convict who has spent 27 years in jail in the case. Prisoner Ghulam Mohammad Bhat took the stand that he was not convicted under an anti-terror law, but only under the Indian Penal Code for murder, and therefore, his act cannot be termed a terrorist act. The J&K government told SC that a convict undergoing life imprisonment for a terror act was not entitled for remission under state policy. Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for the prisoner, said Bhat was convicted only under IPC section 302 (murder) and the Arms Act, and not under the then anti-terror legislation TADA. "Nothing was proved in court to attract TADA provisions. 4 minors accused of raping Class 9 student in her Ghaziabad flat

The alleged sexual assault happened while the girl, a Class IX student at a private school, was alone at home on Sunday morning. Sources said two of the accused are from the same school as her – one in her class, the other in class X. The two others are Class XI students who study elsewhere. Both did not continue in Class 11," the school manager said.
