Nineteen years after seven train blasts here killed more than 180 persons, the Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all 12 accused, saying the prosecution utterly failed to prove the case and it was "hard to believe the accused committed the crime".
The court allowed the appeals filed by the accused challenging their conviction and sentences imposed on them by a special court in 2015.

A special bench of Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak said the prosecution has failed to even bring on record the type of bombs used in the crime, and that the evidence relied on by it was not conclusive to convict the accused.
The bench refused to confirm the death penalties imposed on five of the 12 accused and dismissed the confirmation appeals filed by the Maharashtra government.

Madras HC flags lapses in SC/ST Act cases; directs DGP to enforce strict compliance with rules
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has flagged the procedural lapses committed by the investigating officers while dealing with complaints of caste discrimination filed under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and directed the Tamil Nadu DGP to ensure strict compliance with the law. "In several matters relating to complaints made under SC/ST (PoA), procedural lapses are being noticed. The second respondent shall communicate a copy of this order to all SPs who shall ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the SC/ST (PoA) Act and the Rules, particularly Rule 7 relating to the rank of the IO and time-bound filing of the final report,' said Justice P Velmurugan in a recent order. Citing a Supreme Court order, he said when a complaint discloses a cognizable offence under the provisions of the SC/ST (PoA) Act, no preliminary enquiry is permissible either under this Act or the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the enquiry on the complaint shall be held by an officer in the rank of a DSP and not by an Inspector as provided under section 7 (1) of the Act.

In a fiery post on X, Vance accused the WSJ of publishing what he called a 'hit piece' against Trump without providing credible proof. 'I have no idea if the book exists—WSJ won't show it to us. I have no idea if the letter exists—WSJ won't show it to us,' he wrote. 'It's disgraceful, and it's why the president sued," he added. Vance also pushed back on the broader narrative, calling it 'absurd that a major American paper would attack the President of the United States without revealing the basis", referring to allegations that Trump write poems to Epstein, and warning that the media will 'dribble little details out for days or weeks in an effort to assassinate the president's character.'
