Suddenly hot White Sox aim to continue streak in Tampa
The Chicago White Sox can do something Monday that they have not achieved in more than a year when they travel to play the Tampa Bay Rays.
Chicago comes out of the All-Star break having recorded its first sweep of the season, taking three games on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates in dominating fashion. Capped by Sunday's 7-2 victory, the White Sox outscored their hosts 27-7 over the weekend to record the team's first road sweep in more than three years.
Sunday's starting pitcher Aaron Civale said the four-day break last week benefited the team.
'It's hard to get away from this game for one day, so for a lot of guys, it's a good reset,' said Civale, who earned his first victory with the club on Sunday. The righty allowed only one unearned run across six innings and struck out a season-high six against just three hits and a walk.
Miguel Vargas was one of the hitting stars for the White Sox over the weekend. The infielder went 4-for-13 in the three games, with two doubles Saturday and a double and three-run homer on Sunday. He scored five times in the sweep.
Rookie Sean Burke (4-8, 4.36 ERA) will try to give the White Sox their first four-game winning streak since May 2024. The 25-year-old faces the Rays for the first time. He's coming off a no-decision against the Cleveland Guardians on July 12, when he gave up two runs on three hits and a pair of walks over five innings while notching five strikeouts.
Chicago's sweep will not turn the tide on this season as the team (35-65) is 30 games under .500 through the first 100 contests. Still, it shows the White Sox have improved from last season's franchise-worst 41-121 campaign.
The Rays saw their hopes for a series sweep dashed on Sunday when the visiting Baltimore Orioles beat them 5-3.
All-Star Junior Caminero struck out with the bases loaded to end Sunday's game, but he was electric during the rest of the series. He went 6-for-14 with two homers and five RBIs. Yandy Diaz finished 6-for-10 with a homer, four RBIs and five runs scored.
Tampa starter Shane Baz (8-5, 4.17) will see the White Sox for the first time in his career.
The right-hander, 26, has lost two straight starts but pitched well in both. In his last start, he gave up the only run in a 1-0 road loss to the Boston Red Sox on July 12. The Red Sox, who were in the middle of a 10-game winning streak, managed only five hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings versus Baz, who struck out three.
At 52-48, the Rays are in fourth place in the American League East and 6 1/2 games back of division-leading Toronto Blue Jays. However, they trail the Red Sox and Seattle Mariners by only 1 1/2 games for the last two AL wild-card spots.
While Rays starter Ryan Pepiot gave up all five runs in the loss Sunday and was disappointed he could not pitch the Rays to a sweep, he told the Tampa Bay Times that the team enjoyed a good weekend.
'We still won the series,' he said. 'If you win every single series, at the end of the season, you're going to be in pretty good shape.'

Blue Jays capitalize on Yankees' mistakes, seal series win
(Photo credit: Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images) Chris Bassitt struck out eight, Bo Bichette hit a two-run homer and the host Toronto Blue Jays defeated the sloppy New York Yankees 8-4 on Wednesday night. The Yankees committed four errors and other uncredited misplays in the rubber match of a three-game series as the Blue Jays rebuilt their lead over the Yankees in the American League East to four games. Bassitt (11-4) allowed four runs (three earned), three hits and no walks in 7 1/3 innings. Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run and Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe hit solo shots for the Yankees. Dominguez's liner to right opened the scoring in the second. Yankees starter Max Fried (11-4) retired his first seven batters before running into trouble. George Springer looped a one-out single to center and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. scorched an RBI double into the left-field corner. Alejandro Kirk walked and Addison Barger loaded the bases on an infield hit to third. Ernie Clement lined a single to center to give Toronto a 2-1 lead. Volpe homered to left center with one out in the fifth. Toronto scored twice in the home fifth without a hit. Davis Schneider and Springer walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Both scored when Fried fielded Guerrero's squibber up the third-base line and made an errant throw to catcher J.C. Escarra. The Yankees tied the game in the sixth. Trent Grisham reached second on Guerrero's error on a grounder to first. Judge launched a sinker over the wall in right center to move into sixth on the all-time Yankees list with 352 homers. Toronto regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Clement tripled when right fielder Cody Bellinger lost his fly ball in the twilight. Myles Straw doubled into the left-field corner to chase Fried, who had a bloodied left pinkie from throwing his curveball. With Jonathan Loaisiga pitching, Ben Rice's error on pinch hitter Will Wagner's grounder to first allowed Straw to score. Fried gave up six runs (four earned), six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Yankees manager Aaron Boone and pitching coach Matt Blake were ejected in the seventh after Volpe was called out on strikes. Toronto added two insurance runs in the seventh when Guerrero singled and Bichette homered against Scott Effross.

MLS All-Stars, minus Lionel Messi, defeat Liga MX All-Stars
(Photo credit: Scott Wachter-Imagn Images) Major League Soccer joint leading scorer Sam Surridge of Nashville SC scored in the first half to help the MLS All-Stars to a 3-1 victory over their Liga MX foes despite the absence of Lionel Messi in the All-Star Game on Wednesday night in Austin, Texas. The Philadelphia Union's Tai Baribo added the eventual winner early in the second half, and the Vancouver Whitecaps' Brian White provided late insurance for MLS, which won for the third time in four All-Star Games played in this format since 2021. Tijuana's 16-year-old Gilberto Mora pulled a goal back later in the second half for Liga MX and became the youngest goal-scorer in the event's history. Earlier this month, he became the youngest player ever to win a senior continental international title as part of Mexico's CONCACAF Gold Cup championship squad. Surridge and Inter Miami's Messi each have 18 league goals. It was uncertain all week whether Messi would play on Wednesday, but the 38-year-old, eight-time Ballon d'Or winner did not appear. His Miami teammate, Jordi Alba, also missed the exhibition. Per MLS rules, Messi and Alba would face a one-game suspension for skipping the All-Star Game, which would see them miss a home match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday. However, MLS commissioner Don Garber said Wednesday that no decision on suspensions had been made. Surridge opened the scoring in the 28th minute on a chance created by Los Angeles FC's Denis Bouanga, who beat the Liga MX defense with his pace but saw his initial effort denied by Club America goalkeeper Luis Malagon. Bouanga reached the rebound, then bent in a diagonal cross toward the 6-yard box, where Surridge met it with a downward header that beat Malagon. Baribo, who has 14 regular-season goals this year, four behind Messi and Surridge in the MLS Golden Boot race, doubled the advantage in the 51st minute. He reached a cross from the left by Columbus' Diego Rossi and beat Cruz Azul goalie Kevin Mier from about 15 yards out. Mora pulled a goal back in the 64th minute, but White made sure of the MLS win in the 80th minute. The New England Revolution's Carles Gil was exceptional in setting up the attack for the final goal, maneuvering out of traffic at midfield before playing in the San Jose Earthquakes' Cristian Espinoza down the left. The Chicago Fire's Philip Zinckernagel provided the final pass for White's tap-in from close range.

Division leaders clash as Blue Jays, Tigers begin series
(Photo credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images) The Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers each have 60 victories, but the two division leaders have been heading in opposite directions. The Blue Jays have won five of their six games since the All-Star break, opening up a four-game lead over the second-place New York Yankees in the American League East. Detroit has seen its lead in the AL Central shrink to eight games over the Cleveland Guardians after dropping nine of its past 10 games. Now the Tigers will host the Blue Jays for four games beginning on Thursday night. Detroit was swept in a three-game series this week by the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates, the last-place team in the National League Central. 'It's a good testament to just getting up and moving on,' Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling said, according to the Detroit News. 'It's a new day and the biggest thing, it's a new series. Regardless of what's happened these past couple, we have to move on. We know they've been playing good baseball, but it's a new series and that's awesome for us. We get a new start.' Reese Olson (4-3, 2.71 ERA) will start the series opener for the Tigers. He tossed five-plus scoreless innings in Texas on Friday, allowing two hits and a walk but still needing 90 pitches to get 15 outs. Olson has made three starts since a finger injury on his throwing hand forced him to the injured list in mid-May. He has given up just three runs in 14 1/3 innings (1.88 ERA) during that span. 'I felt a little more normal than I had my last two starts back,' he said after the outing against the Rangers. 'Still too many three-ball counts, but I felt more normal, for sure.' Olson stymied the Blue Jays in his last start before going on the IL, holding them to one hit and a walk in six scoreless innings on May 17. He is 1-0 with a 0.55 ERA in four career appearances (three starts) against Toronto. He will be opposed by Eric Lauer (5-2, 2.80 ERA), who is coming off one of his best outings of the season. Lauer held the San Francisco Giants to two runs on two hits in six innings with seven strikeouts and no walks on Saturday. That equaled his longest start this year. 'What he's been able to do, to come in and just give us a chance to win every game, it's invaluable,' infielder Ernie Clement said. 'Tip of the cap to him. He's probably been our unsung MVP so far.' Lauer, who pitched in South Korea last year, has given the starting staff an unexpected boost. 'I'm just trying to make sure that I stick in the rotation, honestly,' Lauer said. 'That's what I want to do, and that's where I think I can help the team best.' Lauer is 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA in three career starts against Detroit. He took a no-decision against Olson and the Tigers on May 17 after yielding one run in three innings. Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. appears to be heating up entering the series, having reached base 11 times over the past four games. He knocked in two runs and scored twice in an 8-4 win over the Yankees on Wednesday. In contrast, Tigers All-Star outfielder Riley Greene is 3-for-21 with 10 strikeouts since the All-Star break. Manager A.J. Hinch rested him Wednesday as Detroit lost 6-1 to the Pirates. 'Everybody needs a blow every now and then. He looks like he's had a long week,' Hinch said.
