Cardinals Listed As Best Fit For Their Former Prospect At Trade Deadline
The St. Louis Cardinals entered the season with low expectations and an evaluation mindset. Now, in July, they are on the cusp of taking over a playoff spot in the National League, despite Erick Fedde and Miles Mikolas being among the league's worst starting pitchers.

If the Diamondbacks keep on this track, they could be selling pieces to build for next year at the end of the month. Tim Britton, Aaron Gleeman, and Chad Jennings of The Athletic rank D-Backs right-hander Zac Gallen as the No. 10 trade candidate on their big board and think St. Louis could be a good fit.
Gallen has been electric during his career, but has had a rocky season to this point with the Diamondbacks. The starter has received Cy Young votes in three seasons, including a third-place finish in 2023, when he was also elected to the All-Star Game.
Gallen has a 5.15 ERA this season, a career high, along with career highs in FIP and WHIP. While Gallen's pitched below his standards so far, the Cardinals would have to be betting on a rebound in the second half from a 29-year-old pitcher who has a track record of success.
Gallen is a free agent at the end of this season, and if the Cardinals choose to make a move for him, it would not affect their long-term plan with the starting pitching waiting in the farm system.
Mikolas and Fedde are both free agents at the end of the season, and if the Cardinals are serious about making the playoffs and having a chance, a roll of the dice on Gallen could be the best call.

'I think it's pretty exciting because I feel like, obviously, Victor's got great skills. Then De'Aaron, Stephon and getting (Spurs drafting) Dylan Harper. So, I feel like there's a good mix.' Luke Kornet details his fit in with the Spurs A 7-footer, Kornet described how effective he can be with Wemby, whom the Spurs have spent the last two years building around. 'Obviously, Victor's talented where I feel like we could be able to play together. I did that some with Kristaps Porzingis in Boston in the past year and Al Horford,' the former Boston Celtic said. 'I feel like having a lot of experience with that both defensively and offensively and how to be able to play.' In that time, he became a vital part of a team that won the 2024 NBA championship led by Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. It serves as another experience Kornet can take with him to the Alamo City. 'Being able to be a good pick and roll partner with a lot of the downhill guards,' the Vanderbilt graduate said before pivoting to his other skills. 'I feel like, for me, the keys to my game, especially now, are just protecting the rim, which I feel me and Victor could be, obviously, really competent together, especially when he's off the floor, being able to provide that.' The Spurs have lacked a quality big man to pair next to Wembayama since they took him with the top overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. San Antonio started Zach Collins next to Wemby early in the French phenom's rookie season, but as Wembanyama's game evolved, so did his team's lineups. Charles Bassey, Bismack Biyombo and Sandro Mamukelashvili have taken turns trying spell the Spurs star player through Rookie of the Year and All-Star seasons. 'So, a fun part about it is that it's going to look different than what it has a year before me. Every single year of playing is kind of like a new situation of figuring out how to best play,' the Lexington, Kentucky native who played his high school ball in Texas continued. 'I'm looking forward to figuring out the optimal way with this group and with how Mitch [Spurs Coach Mitch Johnson] wants us to play, just start integrating that and finding out what those best answers are.' Durant and the Suns crashed and burned last season as the Big Three of him, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal struggled to stay healthy and mesh on the court. Now, he heads to another new situation where he will have the opportunity to help a young Rockets team that showed plenty of promise last season get over the hump. However, when he was on the court, he still averaged 26.6 points per game on efficient shooting and was named an All-Star. There is no question that, if healthy, Durant gives the Rockets exactly what they need and what they were missing last season during the playoffs against the Golden State Warriors. While he didn't reach his goals with Phoenix, it's clear that his time there helped him and will continue to be a benefit as he makes his way to Houston. 'Kevin impacts the game on both ends of the court and is one of the most efficient scorers in the history of basketball,' Rockets general manager Rafael Stone said. 'We liked the growth our team showed last season and believe Kevin's skill set will integrate seamlessly.'
