Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Dallas Mavericks made the move that had been long expected. Ever since the team won the NBA Draft lottery with a 1.8 percent chance, they had been expected to draft Duke star Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick. On Wednesday night, that move happened. Flagg is now a member of the Mavericks and will be looking to help the franchise turn back into an NBA Finals contender. After trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of the trade deadline last year, landing Flagg was a major stroke of luck. Nico Harrison has been given a second chance to get things right. However, in the NBA, it's possible that the Mavericks could look to play him at another position. That is exactly what minority owner Mark Cuban is wanting to see. He wants to see Flagg play point guard and plans to let head coach Jason Kidd know that. As shared by Noah Weber of The Smoking Cuban, Cuban spoke out on the matter in a recent meetup with the press. "I'd send a text to J-Kidd, point guard, point guard, point guard, let him bring the ball up," Cuban said. He also said that the team is "going to have the biggest team in the NBA." Flagg has true generational talent. Should he reach his full potential, Dallas will have a very special player on its hands. Cuban knows that and he also knows just how wide of a skill-set the 18-year-old comes with. He averaged 19.2 points per game to go along with 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.4 steals, while shooting 48.1 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from three-point range. All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what plans the Mavericks have in store for Flagg. They could look to play him at point guard or they could simply let him play his natural position of forward. Regardless of where they play him, Flagg is going to be one of the most watched players in the NBA during the upcoming 2025-26 season. Bologna Products Recall Sparks Nationwide Warning to Customers
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Gaiser's European Style Provisions Inc. is recalling over 143,000 pounds of ready-to-eat bologna products due to "misbranding," according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on Friday. Newsweek reached out to the company via email for comment. Why It Matters Numerous recalls have been initiated in 2025 due to the potential of damaged products, foodborne illness, contamination and undeclared food allergens. Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or allergies every year. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the nine "major" food allergens in the U.S. are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, Crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts and peanuts. What To Know In the alert, the FSIS warns that the recalled bologna products contain "meat or poultry source materials" not noted on the product's labels. The goods were produced from March 20, 2025, to June 20, 2025. The alert has photos of the various products' labels and below is a list of the impacted products, according to the FSIS: Vacuum-packed packages of "FAMILY TREE BOLOGNA VEAL" containing undeclared pork. Plastic-wrapped packages of "BABUSHKA'S RECIPE CHICKEN BOLOGNA" containing undeclared pork. Plastic-wrapped packages of "FANCY BOLOGNA" labeled with pork as an ingredient but containing undeclared beef and chicken. Vacuum-packed packages of "GAISER'S RUSSIAN BRAND DOKTORSKAYA BOLOGNA" containing undeclared beef. Plastic-wrapped packages of "GAISER'S BOLOGNA VEAL" containing undeclared chicken and pork. Plastic-wrapped packages of "GAISER'S TURKEY BOLOGNA" containing undeclared chicken and pork. Plastic-wrapped packages of "CHICKEN BOLOGNA KYPOYKA PABA" containing undeclared pork. The FSIS warns that these products were distributed to retailers and wholesalers across the country and have an establishment number of "EST. 5385" inside the U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection mark. "Some products would have been weighed, wrapped, and labeled in retail store locations at the time of purchase," the FSIS says, adding later that the department is concerned people may have the recalled products in their freezers or refrigerators. What People Are Saying The FSIS in the alert, in part: "The problem was discovered when FSIS was notified by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) of a complaint received through the OIG's hotline. FSIS investigated the complaint and determined that the products contained source materials that were not declared on the label. "Although FSIS does not expect any adverse health effects for Class III recalled products and there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider." What Happens Next Customers who have purchased the recalled products should not consume them; either throw them away or return the goods to the original place of purchase, the FSIS says.

Republican to Retire as Democrats Eye Potential House Seat: Reports
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Nebraska Republican Representative Don Bacon is set to retire, according to numerous media outlets on Friday, setting the stage for Democrats to go all in on the competitive House seat. Newsweek reached out to Bacon's office in Washington, D.C., via phone Friday night and left a voicemail. Why It Matters Republicans currently maintain a slim majority in the House of Representatives, after taking control of Congress, the Senate and the White House following the 2024 elections. Bacon's decision not to run again underscores growing tensions and internal divisions within the Republican Party, particularly as moderates like Bacon have voiced concerns over the GOP's direction and the influence of its far-right faction. With Democrats looking ahead to the midterms next year, on the heels of a presidential loss and amid their own party's uncertainty, the opening of Bacon's seat presents a key opportunity. What To Know According to several media outlets on Friday, Bacon will not seek reelection. Axios reports that he will make the announcement on Monday, citing two sources familiar with the matter. The news website based in Arlington, Virginia, also says, citing a source close to the issue, that Republicans have two potential contenders to fill Bacon's seat: Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson and former Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert. Bacon has served Nebraska in Congress since 2017, winning multiple competitive races in the state's 2nd Congressional District, an area that has seen increasingly close contests between Republicans and Democrats in recent election cycles. The district seat encompasses the city of Omaha, among others, and was won by both former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and ex-President Joe Biden in 2020. Bacon has distinguished himself by criticizing both the far-right faction in the House and President Donald Trump. The Nebraska Republican has publicly opposed the president on key issues like questioning his tariff powers. Margins this close in the House mean that any vacancy, particularly in a swing district like Bacon's, could significantly impact the party's legislative agenda and ability to pass bills. Republican leadership, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, has emphasized the stakes, saying that this Congress represents a mandate handed down by Trump's decisive election win. Punchbowl News was the first to report Bacon's impending plans. GOP Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska arrives for a House Republican conference at the U.S. Capitol on May 6 in Washington, D.C. (Photo by) GOP Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska arrives for a House Republican conference at the U.S. Capitol on May 6 in Washington, D.C. (Photo by) What People Are Saying Madison Andrus, spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, in a statement on Friday: "The writing has been on the wall for months. Nebraskans are tired of the false promises that Republicans are trying to sell and they want real results." Andrus added, "Don Bacon's decision to not seek reelection in 2026 is the latest vote of no-confidence for House Republicans and their electoral prospects. Next November, Nebraskans are going to elect a Democrat who will actually deliver for them." What Happens Next The contest to replace Bacon is expected to attract significant national attention and funding from both major parties. Democratic and Republican candidates are likely to contest the newly open seat in a high-profile, expensive race. The official field of candidates will form over the coming months, ahead of the 2026 primary and general elections. Further leadership and committee shifts in the House may follow, as the composition of Congress changes with each new vacancy.

Naz Reid Inks Huge $125 Million Contract With Timberwolves
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid signed a five-year, $125 million deal with the team, staying in Minnesota for the foreseeable future. Reid will earn $25 million per season during the deal, though his contract does come as a surprise. The Timberwolves were facing payroll issues since Reid and Julius Randle were set to be free agents. The team faced difficulties committing long-term money to both, though Reid is now secured heading into the season. More Photo byThe center could have netted more money if he had accepted his player option and had another season of high-level production, though there was a risk that his value would be negatively impacted. Instead, he chose to stay with the team that drafted him and secure his long-term financial future. More NBA news: Mavericks Fans Erupt in 'Fire Nico Harrison' Chant After Cooper Flagg Pick The former LSU product won the 2023-2024 Sixth Man of the Year. Reid had a career year during last season, averaging 14.2 points per game and six rebounds in 27.5 minutes. Reid is still only 25 years old, leaving the Wolves with the early half of the center's prime. He is an ultra-valuable floor-spacing center who can rebound at a high level and make room for Anthony Edwards to operate in the paint. Reid provides a good change of pace over Gobert, who is a non-shooter that defends well, but operates in the paint on offense. On the other hand, Reid's defense is at replacement level, able to hold his own, although still limited when guarding out on the perimeter and with rim protection. He shot 37.9 percent from the 3-point line on 5.8 attempts per game over the last season, cementing himself as a top shooting big man. Julius Randle's future remains uncertain since he hasn't yet decided on his player option. Since the Timberwolves fell short of the NBA Finals, the team might shake up its roster and move on from Randle. Regardless of what happens with Randle, Reid's future in Minnesota is set. Dallas Cowboys Named Potential Suitor For Ex-Steelers Standout
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. During the offseason, the Dallas Cowboys made a flurry of moves to bolster the cast of offensive weapons around Dak Prescott. With training camp just around the corner, they've been named a possible suitor for a former first-round pick if he were to hit the market. Back in 2021, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted running back Najee Harris with the 24th overall pick. He went on to become a key piece of the franchise, tallying at least 1,000 yards and six touchdowns in each of his first four seasons. However, despite his consistent production, the Steelers decided to let Harris walk in free agency. He'd go on to find a new home in the AFC, inking a one-year deal with the LA Chargers. Following mandatory minicamp earlier this month, the people at Bleacher Report put together a big board of possible trade candidates in the NFL. Seeing that he's on a one-year deal and the Chargers just drafted a RB, Harris' name popped up. As for teams who could make a run at him in the trade market, the Cowboys were among those mentioned. Expert analysis on the best NFL Anytime Touchdown bets for Giants vs. Steelers, including Steelers RB Najee Harris. Expert analysis on the best NFL Anytime Touchdown bets for Giants vs. Steelers, including Steelers RB Najee read: Cowboys Coach Utters Vote of Confidence in Former Pro Bowler "That said, Harris is on a one-year deal and may not be viewed as a long-term piece for L.A. The Chargers also drafted Omarion Hampton with the No. 22 overall pick in April, and the North Carolina product might walk into an every-down role," wrote BR's Kristopher Knox. "Dallas should consider adding Harris as a high-floor option in its backfield." With a gunslinger in Prescott under center, the run game isn't something the Cowboys typically lean on. That said, bringing in a reliable back could give the offense a much-needed dynamic. Being able to establish a ground game might help open up things for Prescott to utilize his new receiver duo of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. Also read: Kevin Durant Utters Bold Statement on Cowboys Star Micah Parsons Trading for Harris isn't exactly a necessity for the Cowboys, as running back is a position they've secured short and long-term options at. In free agency, they landed a pair of veterans in Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. Dallas also took a flier on two RBs in Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. While it might not be a major area of need, monitoring Harris' situation could make sense for the Cowboys as they attempt to compete in a stacked NFC East.
