Sparks, Azurá Stevens rally to beat Fever, 89-87, ending Indiana's 3-game winning streak

Rickea Jackson's short jumper with 58 seconds remaining put the Los Angeles Sparks on top for good in their 89-87 win over the Indiana Fever on Saturday night. Jackson scored nine of the Sparks' final 10 points and finished with 15 in the game. Azurá Stevens led Los Angeles with 21 points, providing the final margin of victory on a free throw with 3.2 seconds remaining. She also grabbed 12 rebounds. Kelsey Plum added 20 points and improved her personal record against Indiana to 21-1, the highest winning percentage for a player in at least 20 games against a single team. Advertisement The Fever played their fifth consecutive game without Caitlin Clark, who continues to be sidelined with a left groin injury. Clark has missed 10 games overall this season, twice sitting out for five straight games. Indiana held an 60-52 lead with four minutes to go in the third quarter, but the Sparks ended the frame with an 18-9 run that gave them a 70-69 lead going into the final 10 minutes. Plum and Dearica Hamby (who finished with 18) each scored five points during that surge. Kelsey Mitchell continued her stellar play in Clark's absence, scoring 19 points for Indiana. She's averaged 21.6 points during the past five games. Natasha Howard added 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor, while grabbing nine boards. Advertisement Aliyah Boston dominated inside throughout the game, leading the Fever with 23 points and 12 rebounds. However, she missed a jumper with 0.1 seconds left that would have tied the score. Indiana missed its final five shots of the game. With the defeat, Indiana dropped to 9-9, putting them seventh in the WNBA standings. The Fever has gone 3-2 without Clark during her latest five-game absence. Up next for them is hosting the Golden State Valkyries (9-8) on Wednesday. The Sparks improved to 6-13, but sit in 10th place. They will face the league-leading Minnesota Lynx (16-2) at home on Thursday.

WNBA daily slate for Sunday July 6, 2025

We've got a full slate of WNBA action today. After the Sparks picked up a road win in Indiana and Minnesota beat the Valkyries, we now turn to two home favorites and one road favorite on the schedule. Let's get into the matchups: Advertisement WNBA NEWS:Kelsey Plum is Indiana Fever's biggest nemesis - her record vs. Caitlin Clark's team is insane Seattle Storm at New York Liberty The Seattle Storm are off to an 11-7 start this season, led by the scoring and veteran presence of Skylar Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike. The Storm have won seven of their last ten games and sit third in the Western Conference. They remain one of the top three-point shooting teams in the league, hitting nearly 36 percent from beyond the arc. New York is 12-5, though the Liberty have gone just 5-5 in their last ten games after starting the season 7-0. They're coming off a home win over the Sparks on Thursday. New York leads the league in scoring at nearly 88 points per game, with Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu combining for 39.2 points per contest. Advertisement Las Vegas Aces at Connecticut Sun This should be a chance for Becky Hammon and the Aces to bounce back. Las Vegas is coming off a rough performance earlier in the week in Indianapolis and sits at 8-9 on the season. A'ja Wilson continues to dominate with 22.1 points per game, but the Aces need more consistent production across their lineup. The Connecticut Sun have dropped three of their last four games. They most recently lost by 39 points on the road against the Minnesota Lynx. The Sun will hope their recent time off helped improve an offense that ranks last in the WNBA at just 71.1 points per game. Connecticut is shooting only 39.3 percent from the field. Chicago Sky at Minnesota Lynx Angel Reese headlines the final game of the day. Tyler Marsh's Chicago Sky have struggled to a 5-11 record this season. They won their last game a week ago in Los Angeles. Reese continues to impress, averaging 12.4 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. Advertisement Minnesota is currently the best team in the league. While the Lynx lost the Commissioner's Cup final on Tuesday, they bounced back with an 82-71 win over the Valkyries on Saturday. In the regular season, Minnesota is running away with the Western Conference at 16-2. Enjoy today's action! MORE WNBA NEWS:

Bronny James on his main focus this offseason

This is a big offseason for Bronny James, the son of LeBron James. He had a promising finish to his rookie year this past season in the G League, and working hard and smart on his game this summer is of paramount importance if he is going to have any chance of ever becoming a rotation player in the NBA. He didn't play in the Los Angeles Lakers' first game of the California Classic on Saturday, but he is expected to participate at some point, and summer league play should give a glimpse into what type of player he will be this coming season. Advertisement He told reporters that he is focusing on the defensive end of the court and on becoming a difference-maker in that department. 'It's definitely made me think about being more aggressive on that end of the floor, but I can't lose that defensive drive that will get me on the floor because there's gonna be guys that can score 15, 20 a game,' the younger James said. 'I'm most likely not going to be that guy right now. To get myself on the floor, I've got to be a defensive menace. That's my main focus, getting conditioned this year. It's been shown that I know how to score the ball a little bit, I'm staying true to that, but also focusing on the defensive end.' While the 20-year-old could become a spark plug on the offensive end and has shown signs of doing just that, he has been lauded over the last couple years for his defense, which could be more developed than his offensive game at this point. With his ample athleticism and defensive instincts, perhaps he could carve out a reputation as someone who makes a living on that end of the floor.
