At 47 years old, Gabrielle Rose finishes 7th in 100-meter breaststroke finals at U.S. Nationals
Gabrielle Rose might be 47 years old, but she's still one of the best breaststroke swimmers in the country. Nearly three decades after qualifying for her first Olympics, Rose finished seventh in the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Swimming National Championships on Friday, falling short of qualifying for the world championships but still defying her age. Advertisement Rose posted a time of 1:08.54, close to her personal best of 1:08.32 and roughly three seconds behind champion Kate Douglass. Three-time Olympic gold medallist Lilly King, who plans to retire after this season, finished second. The one swimmer Rose finished ahead of in the final was the youngest person in the pool, Elle Scott. She was born in 2007. To make the final, Rose had to make the top 8 of a field of 60 swimmers, with every competitor at least 19 years younger than her. Every single one of those 59 other swimmers was born after Rose made her first Olympics in 1996, when she competed in the 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter freestyle for Team Brazil. Advertisement The Rio de Janeiro native and Stanford graduate switched to representing the U.S. in 1999. After Rose, the oldest swimmer was King at 28 years old. Per SwimSwam, Rose was the oldest swimmer to ever qualify for a championship final at a U.S. Olympic or Worlds Trial meet. Following her two Olympic berths in 1996 and 2000, Rose retired from competitive swimming in 2004 at age 26 after being struck with mononucleosis shortly before the Olympic trials. Per World Aquatics, her passion for the sport was reignited when she focused on fulfilling her late father's wish of preserving an Olympic-sized pool in her hometown. Advertisement Rose made a surprise return to elite competition in 2022 and reached the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, where she reached the semifinals 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke. Despite being in her mid-40s, she managed to make it a step further one year later. She also competed in the 50-meter breaststroke, placing 15th, and the 200-meter breaststroke, placing 19th.

Team Brazil coach gives high praise to Caitlin Clark: 'You've changed the history in basketball'
The Carver-Hawkeye Arena sold-out crowd got to see Caitlin Clark in action once more, but this time, she was wearing an Indiana Fever jersey instead of her black and yellow Iowa threads. The Fever's second WNBA preseason game was a special one, as the Brazil National Team traveled to Iowa City to take on Indiana in an exhibition game. During the 108-44 rout by the Fever, Team Brazil head coach Leo Figueiro shared a nice moment with Clark during the second quarter when he went over to her in between whistles. Clark was mic'd up for the game, so that moment was shared for the world to hear. "You're an amazing player, congratulations," Figueiro said to Clark, who went up to him to see how he was. "You've changed the history in basketball." Clark gave a very professional answer. "I appreciate it," she said. "Thanks for coming here and playing us." Clark switched the conversation from her to Team Brazil. "Most people you've played in front of?" Clark asked, to which Figueiro responded, "Yeah." It might have been a blowout, but Team Brazil was not mad after the game. One could tell they enjoyed the crowd and interacting with players, while showcasing their own skill. Clark and others took pictures and spoke with the players after the game. After the game, Clark was asked about the crowd that poured into the arena to see her play in her old stomping grounds. "I certainly give the fans something to cheer about. That's my goal," Clark said, per HawkCentral. "Get them involved. Get them loud. Because, I told my teammates, it's going to be the loudest arena you've ever played in. So, I've got to make a few shots and be able to get them on their feet." Clark looked just as she did for the Hawkeyes, pulling up at the logo for a deep three-pointer, which had the crowd roaring. She finished with 14 points in just over 18 minutes of play, her first of the 2025 season, as she sat out against the Washington Mystics in the Fever's first preseason game. The 2024 Rookie of the Year is ready to take the next step in year two in the WNBA, but this matchup against Team Brazil is yet another reminder of how Clark is playing an enormous role in changing the game of basketball and women's sports as a whole. Caitlin Clark, Fever demolish Team Brazil in WNBA preseason game
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever had their way with the Brazil National Team in the team's second WNBA preseason game this year. Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Clark's old stomping grounds with the Iowa Hawkeyes, was the location for this special preseason matchup, and the NCAA's all-time leading point scorer felt right at home again. In the 108-44 victory, Clark poured in 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while dishing five assists and collecting six rebounds over her 18:42 minutes on the floor. Clark didn't play the team's opening preseason game against the Washington Mystics due to a leg injury, but she looked locked in for her first action of 2025 in a Fever uniform. And, of course, she was pouring in three-pointers from the Hawkeyes' logo just as she did in college. Clark was one of four Fever starters who had double-digit points in this one, including Kelsey Mitchell, the team's leading scorer with 17 points, while also tallying three steals. Aliyah Boston, who Clark developed a great rapport with during her Rookie of the Year campaign, also had 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals for Indiana. Some newcomers for the Fever, DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard and Sophie Cunningham, also contributed in the rout over Team Brazil. As a team, the Fever shot an impressive 15-of-33 from beyond the arc, marking 45.5% shots made from three-point territory. They also got Team Brazil to turn the ball over 26 times, showcasing their defensive prowess early this year. The Fever wrap up their preseason schedule with a matchup against the Atlanta Dream on Saturday before they begin their regular season against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on May 17.
