Foote makes changes to Junior Boks team for U20 Championship opener
The Junior Boks were last in action on home soil at the 2025 U20 Rugby Championship, held in Gqeberha.

The Junior Springboks kick off their World Rugby U20 Championship with a clash against old rivals, Australia, in Calvisano, Italy on Sunday, with kick-off at 3.30pm.
While the team is a settled one, it does show four changes from the side that ran New Zealand close in the teams' final match of the U20 Rugby Championship, played in Gqeberha, last month.
Coach Kevin Foote has made one change in the backline and three in the pack from the side that were pipped by New Zealand. Siya Ndlozi replaces Gino Cupido on the left wing, while the rest of the backline remain the same.
In the starting pack, two changes are made at the side of the scrum, with flankers Batho Hlekani and Xola Nyali forming the loose trio combination with No 8 Wandile Mlaba, while in the front row Herman Lubbe gets the nod at tighthead ahead of Jean Erasmus, who is now set to play off the bench.
Jaco Grobbelaar (lock), who joined up with the squad shortly before they flew out from Cape Town, is also set to join the action off the bench.
Amongst the backline replacements, Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf) and Jaco Williams (outside back) are in line to make their Junior Bok debuts should they come off the bench.
'Selection is always tough'
'We are extremely excited about starting the World Championship in Italy,' said Foote.
'It's a great country and you can feel the energy within the group. The players have prepared well, they've got clarity, and they are just such a great group together.'
Talking about his team for the match, Foote said: 'Selection is always tough and leaving some guys out is hard, but we've gone with a team that has played a lot together now, has a lot of synergy and understanding of our game, and knows how to connect on the field.
'We are very excited about the team that we have selected, with Riley Norton captaining the side, and he will be assisted by Haashim Pead, JJ Theron and Siphosethu Mnebelele.'
The tournament consists of three pools, each with four teams. After the three pool matches, the three pool winners and the best runner-up out of the three pools will progress to the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will contest the final, while the losers of those semi-finals will play for third place, with the others vying for positional places.

Pretorius, at just 19 years and 93 days old, surpassed Graeme Pollock (19 years and 318 days old, achieved in 1963) as the youngest South African to score a hundred on debut. Pretorius smashed 153 on day one of the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on Saturday to help the Proteas close the day on 418/9. 'Amazing' Corbin Bosch also hit an excellent century batting lower down the order, while another debutant, Dewald Brevis, made 51 off 41 balls. The young Pretorius said he was grateful to go past the record set by Pollock all those years ago. 'I'm grateful, it's amazing,' said the youngster who came to prominence during this year's SA20 competition. He backed up that showing by scoring plenty of runs in the domestic four-day competition, which helped get him selected for this Test series in Zimbabwe. 'It's a dream come true,' he added about scoring a century on debut. 'I also got a message from AB (de Villiers), who said 'well batted'. I'm lost for words actually.' Asked what his message would be for any other youngsters starting out their cricketing careers, Pretorius said: 'Just to back yourself, be mentally strong, trust your game, trust the people around you who help you. And then also, it's about hard work, discipline, the things off the field that you carry into the game.' Pretorius came to the crease with the Proteas in trouble early in their first innings at 23/3. 'Play with a smile' 'It was doing a bit, the situation was tough, but when you're playing for your country you must embrace the moment,' said the left-hander. 'I tried to enjoy it out there and play with a smile on my face. I love batting and hope I can do it again and again. This is just the beginning.' Pretorius added the Proteas were now in a strong position in the Test going into day two. 'This is definitely where we want to be after day one. They bowled well early on, so we had to absorb some pressure, but it got nice to bat later in the day. It also started turning which is good for us, but there's also a lot of bounce, and we've got some pace as well.'

New twist to Bulls coach saga

According to Rapport, the former Lions coach received a contract extension offer from SA Rugby to continue his work with the Junior Springboks before news broke about White's situation at the Bulls. White is expected to leave his role – despite having taken the Bulls to three Vodacom URC finals in four seasons and being contracted until 2027 – following reported discontent among senior players and assistant coaches Andries Bekker and Chris Rossouw over White's leadership. Norton: Junior Springboks must find balance between kicking and counter-attack against Australia

The youngsters will begin their campaign today against Australia at the San Michele Stadium in Calvisano, Italy (3.30pm SA time kick-off). They will also face England and Scotland in Pool A over the next few weeks. Norton, who also featured for the SA cricket team at the Under-19 World Cup last year, is a No 4 lock who attended Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch and matriculated last year. Having turned 19 in January, Norton has opted to pursue rugby as his main sporting career, and is a first-year BCom Investment Management student at Stellenbosch University. The skipper hopes to follow in the footsteps of then-captain Wiaan Liebenberg in 2012 – when the Junior Boks won the title in Cape Town – and lift the trophy in Italy. 'Of course I back the boys. We've been extremely well prepared, had numerous camps. We've only done it in 2012, and many of those guys became Springboks,' Norton said ahead of the Australia clash. With the conditions very different in summer in Italy, Norton hopes the South Africans are able to utilise the pace of speedsters such as Gilermo Mentoe, Cheswill Jooste and Siyabonga Ndlozi out wide. 'Australia got one-up on us in the Rugby Championship and we have a lot of respect for them. They are really skilled people, and love to take the ball out wide and go coast to coast,' Norton said. Junior Bok coach Kevin Foote was pleased with the preparations for the tournament, and is positive that his players can make a fine start against Australia. 'We obviously have made changes from game to game, and when we've done that, strategically building into this World Cup, we feel like we wanted to give everyone the best opportunity to prepare and look at different combinations,' Foote said. 'All building into this first game against Australia, and making sure that the guys are super confident and have absolute clarity going into our first game. 'I think there's enough motivation already from the guys. They've been together for a while now. And like I keep banging on, they're such a committed group and they just can't wait to get started. 'So I think from our perspective, we understand what Australia bring is a threat, and we understand what our strengths are.
