Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton is confident that his team can emulate the Class of 2012 and clinch the World Rugby Under-20 Championship title.
The youngsters will begin their campaign today against Australia at the San Michele Stadium in Calvisano, Italy (3.30pm SA time kick-off).
They will also face England and Scotland in Pool A over the next few weeks.
Norton, who also featured for the SA cricket team at the Under-19 World Cup last year, is a No 4 lock who attended Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch and matriculated last year.
Having turned 19 in January, Norton has opted to pursue rugby as his main sporting career, and is a first-year BCom Investment Management student at Stellenbosch University.
The skipper hopes to follow in the footsteps of then-captain Wiaan Liebenberg in 2012 – when the Junior Boks won the title in Cape Town – and lift the trophy in Italy.
'Of course I back the boys. We've been extremely well prepared, had numerous camps. We've only done it in 2012, and many of those guys became Springboks,' Norton said ahead of the Australia clash.
'It's definitely something we think we can do. The mood in the camp is unbelievable, and the boys are just excited to get stuck in and express ourselves as a team.'

The Junior Boks face a tough start against Australia, who won their Under-20 Rugby Championship clash 29-24 in Gqeberha in May.
With the conditions very different in summer in Italy, Norton hopes the South Africans are able to utilise the pace of speedsters such as Gilermo Mentoe, Cheswill Jooste and Siyabonga Ndlozi out wide.
'Australia got one-up on us in the Rugby Championship and we have a lot of respect for them. They are really skilled people, and love to take the ball out wide and go coast to coast,' Norton said.
'Conditions in Italy are really hot and humid, from the rainy and cold weather in Stellenbosch.

'So, it's been a different experience, but one that we are really enjoying.
'We have to find the right balance between kicking the ball and letting our counter-attack and our incredibly quick outside backs to have an opportunity to counter and run with the ball.
'We have implemented some systems in our defence where the stack attack caught us off-guard, so we are really excited to face them again and test ourselves against the best.'
Junior Bok coach Kevin Foote was pleased with the preparations for the tournament, and is positive that his players can make a fine start against Australia.
'We obviously have made changes from game to game, and when we've done that, strategically building into this World Cup, we feel like we wanted to give everyone the best opportunity to prepare and look at different combinations,' Foote said.
'All building into this first game against Australia, and making sure that the guys are super confident and have absolute clarity going into our first game.
'I think there's enough motivation already from the guys. They've been together for a while now. And like I keep banging on, they're such a committed group and they just can't wait to get started.
'So I think from our perspective, we understand what Australia bring is a threat, and we understand what our strengths are.

'We must just make sure that we do that for 80 minutes.
'I suppose because we didn't get the result we wanted against Australia in the first one... that's all we're thinking about right now.
'And that's one good positive that we can take out of that is that we can't be looking ahead when we know that Australia is such a threatening team.
'So, we are very, very focused on Australia, and only Australia for now.'

Junior Boks grounded after thrashing Aussies in U-20 champs opener
The Junior Springboks will savour their opening round victory over Australia in the World Rugby Under-20 Championship, but the team will keep their feet firmly on the ground and prepare for the next big challenge, their second pool match against England on Friday. South Africa U-20 coach Kevin Foote was a happy man after his team scored 11 tries to beat the Australians 73-17 in their Pool A opener in Calvisano, Italy, on Sunday. Foote praised the team's conditioning as they outplayed Australia for large parts of the game, which was staged in extreme heat and humidity. 'The conditions were tough, but we managed our nutrition and hydration well,' he said. 'Our preparation was key, both physically and mentally and I think our conditioning was outstanding and for that the team's conditioning staff deserve praise for their hard work.' What a stunner from the Junior Boks 🤩🇿🇦 Siya Ndlozi turns on the gas 💨 📺 Stream #WorldRugbyU20s on DStv: — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) June 29, 2025 Foote was pleased how his players kept to their game plan against the tactically astute Australians. 'We executed our plans perfectly and adapted well under pressure. We balanced our kicking and running game well and our leadership on the field was calm and composed. 'The boys made mature decisions under pressure, which was crucial.' The Junior Bok coach highlighted the seamless integration of new players, with Jaco Grobbelaar and Jaco Williams both joining the team just before they left for Italy. SA U-20 captain Riley Norton, who had a good game at lock, was also pleased with their effort. 'It was a great win against a quality Australian side, but we can improve on certain areas,' said Norton, adding there will be no room for complacency, especially with defending champions England their next opponents on Friday. 'It is just one game under our belts and we want to learn and continuously improve as the tournament progresses,' he said. 'I'm glad for the win and excited for the forthcoming challenges, which will require thorough preparation and review.' England opened their campaign beating Scotland 56-19.

Junior Boks turn attention to England U20s after Aussie mauling
The Junior Springboks have quickly shifted their focus to defending champs England, after crushing the Aussie U20s in their tournament opener. Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton says they still need to improve if they are to challenge England, after they destroyed Australia in their World Rugby U20 Championship opener on Sunday. Picture: Richard Huggard/Gallo Images Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton said the job isn't done and that they would enjoy the win, but prepare for the next battle, after they opened their World Rugby U20 Championship campaign with a 73-17 mauling of Australia in Calvisano, Italy on Sunday. The Junior Boks were a class apart as they ran rampant, outscoring their Southern Hemisphere rivals 11 tries to three, as they got their world champs campaign off to a perfect start. Norton however wasn't completely satisfied, and highlighted that they would have to be even better if they wanted to challenge tournament defending champs England in their second pool match on Friday. 'It definitely wasn't the perfect performance. Australia played some great rugby there at the end, and there are definitely things for us to improve on. But I am proud of the gents,' said Norton. 'We will enjoy the victory, but then its straight back to work. It's only a five day turnaround and we have to get ready for England who are a great team. 'So back to the drawing board, and let's get ready for England. We have to be close to our best (to beat them). They are a great team, well coached and winners from last year. 'It is a great rivalry we have with them. We love playing against England, we love the physical battle, it is very set piece dominated. So we are going to be ready for it and are really excited.' Positive start It is however an extremely positive start for the Junior Boks, especially after they finished third in the U20 Rugby Championship (TRC) on home soil just a few months ago, where they lost to champions New Zealand and thre a 17-0 halftime lead away in going down 29-24 to Australia. Norton admitted that they felt they had a point to prove after their struggles in the TRC, and that he was proud of the improvements they have made since then. 'It (the loss) definitely did play a part. We spoke about it a lot. Australia played well (in the TRC), but we never like losing, especially at home in front of our fans. So it was something that fuelled us and everything worked out,' said Norton. 'What pleased me most (in this game) was the way we managed to hold onto the ball for numerous phases and that we could take it coast to coast. I think from the TRC that was something we really wanted to improve on. 'Our outside backs were just unbelievable. You see when they have a one on one, they can score from anywhere. So that was the best thing. But also our set piece, us as South Africans that's something that we pride ourselves on and I think it fired as well.'

Is this how the Springboks will line up against Italy?
Straight after the Springboks' 'warm-up' game against the Barbarians this past weekend, Rassie Erasmus explained that the selection for the opening phase of the season – which kicks off against Italy with two Tests – had been decided some time ago. With Siya Kolisi still under an injury cloud, it remains to be seen whether he will be risked this Saturday, but the likes of Eben Etzebeth and Bongi Mbonambi should be back. Kick off is at 17:10. Springboks – probable: 15 Aphelele Fassi, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 9 Grant Williams, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Kwagga Smith, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth (c), 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Ox Nche. Replacements: 16 Malcolm Marx, 17 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 18 Vincent Koch, 19 Franco Mostert, 20 RG Snyman, 21 Marco van Staden, 21 Cobus Reinach, 23 Handre Pollard. Describing the eight-tries-to-one rout of the Baas Baas as 'a good hit-out', Erasmus told reporters post-match: 'Overall, I guess it was satisfying but it was just a good hit-out. Now the Test matches start next week.' 'We won't get carried away with a game like this [the Barbarians win]. It's a festival game, and we're playing at home against a team that only practiced a few times together,' he added. 'Italy gave Namibia [a hiding]; I know they're not one of the Tier 1 nations but they gave them 70 points, and we saw how well they played in the first two Test matches in the Six Nations. 'I guess this match and the next three matches that we play, we're trying to focus a lot on us because when we hit the Rugby Championship… and Georgia, will also be a grind. So I guess we want to get better.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
