Johannesburg to host first LIV Golf event in Africa
They said a multi-year contract had been signed for an annual LIV Golf South Africa tournament in a country which has produced many stars, most notably career Grand Slam winner Gary Player.
Major winners Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia are some of the stars in the LIV Golf stable.
Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, former Major champions from South Africa, also compete on the LIV circuit.
"It is always special to compete at home, and I am incredibly proud to bring LIV Golf to South Africa for the first time," said Oosthuizen in a statement.
Chilean Joaquin Niemann, who has never won a Major, has been the most successful LIV competitor with six titles.
The inclusion of South Africa raises to five the number of continents where LIV tournaments will be staged. The tour is financed by the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund.
Unlike traditional 72-hole events staged over four days in the United States, Europe, Australasia and Africa, LIV use one day less, confining tournaments to 54 holes.
LIV also differs from tours like the USPGA, where placings are decided by individual scores, as it also has team competitions.
"Bringing LIV Golf to South Africa is another significant moment in our journey," said senior LIV Golf official Ross Hallett.
"We currently have events in Asia, Europe, Australasia, North America and today we add Africa, marking another exciting opportunity to showcase LIV Golf to a new audience and market."
The first event by the breakaway tour -- LIV Golf London -- was staged in 2022 and won by Schwartzel, who had topped the Masters leaderboard 11 years earlier.

Spanish veteran Garcia wins stage 2 of women's Tour de France
Spanish veteran Mavi Garcia won the second stage of the women's Tour de France on Sunday as Mauritius' Kim Le Court finished the day in the race leader's yellow jersey -- a first for an African rider. The 41-year-old Garcia, of the Liv-AlUla-Jayco team, attacked with 10km to go and it paid off as she crossed the line three seconds ahead of the chasing peloton. Garcia is the oldest rider in the Tour peloton and her victory beat the former age record for a stage winner set by Annemiek Van Vleuten (39 years 9 months 23 days) in 2022. "I've been racing for a long time and I hadn't been having my best year, but this win really gives me a massive boost of energy," said Garcia. "I really didn't believe I was going to win at the end. I've tried many times like that and it never worked out, so I just couldn't believe it until I was five metres from the line and I turned around and saw they wouldn't catch me. "It was only then that I knew I'd really done it. It's been a long, long time since I had any feeling this good in my career." Le Court took over atop the overall standings from Marianne Vos, who won Saturday's opening stage. The duo are tied with the exact same time at the top of the general classifications, with the Mauritian earning the yellow jersey courtesy of her combined stage finish placings over the first two days of racing. "My team said we can take yellow today, but I could not believe it, to be honest I think I'm still a bit shocked," said Le Court. "The ultimate goal of the team is to fight for GC towards the end of the Tour for the overall, but our goal was also to win a stage. "I've come close twice, but now that I have the yellow jersey on my shoulders, it's already a massive achievement for the team and for myself." Dutch sprinter Charlotte Kool, who won the opening two stages of last year's Tour, was a late withdrawal from the peloton, which now counts 152 riders. The Picnic-PostNL rider, who finished 7:40 off Vos' pace on Saturday, fell in competition last week and after consulting her team's medical staff opted to withdraw. Kool's withdrawal was the second of the Tour following that of Swiss rider Marlen Reusser (Movistar), who had been expected to push for the podium but who was sick. Monday's third stage is a flat 163.5km ride from La Gacilly to Angers. The women's Tour features nine stages, culminating in a mountain ascent for a summit finish in the ski resort of Chatel on August 3.

Picture:For the first time in many years South African golf fans will get a chance to watch some of the sport's greatest players closeup on home soil when a LIV Golf tournament is staged in Johannesburg for the first time next year. Steyn City will host the first ever LIV Golf event in Africa between 20 and 22 March next year and besides local golfing heroes Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace and Dean Burmester, who play for the Stinger team and will be in action, golf fans will get a chance to see a number of Major winners in action as well. Among the players who'll feature in the tournament are Major champions Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Cameron Smith, Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson, Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed, and Martin Kaymer, and others including Tyrrell Hatton, Lee Westwood and Joaquin Niemann. Not since the hey days of the 'Million Dollar' at Sun City and the 2003 Presidents Cup, played in George, have South African golf fans seen worldwide stars up close and personal as they will at the LIV event. Among the players who featured in the Presidents Cup at Fancourt were Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Jim Furyk, Kenny Perry, Justin Leonard and Mickelson for the US team, while Ernie Els was supported by the likes of Vijay Singh and Adam Scott on the Presidents Cup team. 'Always special playing at home' Oosthuizen, who won the Open Championship at St Andrews in 2010 for his only Major and is still regarded one of South Africa's best players, and favourites, too, said he was thrilled to be a part of history being made. 'It's always special to compete at home, and I'm incredibly proud to bring LIV Golf to South Africa for the first time,' said Oosthuizen, who is captain of the Stinger team, at the announcement in London on Saturday. 'For Branden, Charl, Dean and I to play in front of our fans, friends, and families will be an unforgettable experience. 'South African sports fans love their golf, and I am sure they will turn out in large numbers to support Stinger. South Africa has given so much to us, and now we get to give something back.' The tournament at Steyn City will be played over three days (54 holes). Steven Louw, CEO of Steyn City Properties, said they'd probably have to toughen up the course a bit by growing the rough and narrowing the fairways, but he also said, 'Everyone still wants to see guys having a go and making birdies'. Tickets and fan packages for the tournament next March are already available through the LIV Golf site.

Gayton LIVs it up as cash-strapped federations plan to hit back
While sport minister Gayton McKenzie participated in yesterday's announcement that LIV Golf was heading to South Africa next year, national federations still reeling from his funding cuts were finalising a unified response. Local sports officials this week staged an emergency meeting — facilitated by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) — to draw up a battle plan after their annual budgets were slashed by a combined R40m, translating into cuts ranging from 40% to 60% across the board. There are fears some federations would be unable to survive, with some — nearly four months into the financial year — having already spent cash they thought they'd receive based on earlier three-year agreements with the department of sport, arts & culture (DSAC). Sascoc is expected to issue a statement in the next day or so, although the Sunday Times has been told one possible retaliation could be to boycott DSAC's annual sports awards banquet at Sun City next month. McKenzie and Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi were present at the LIV Golf announcement alongside golfer Louis Oosthuizen and the tour's CEO Scott O'Neil at the JCB Golf and Country Club, which is hosting this week's UK 2025 event. They announced a multi-year deal with LIV, with the first event taking place at Steyn City in Johannesburg from March 20-22.
