David Attenborough admits 'if this doesn't work, I don't know what will'

Daily Mirror08-05-2025
The natural history veteran has this week launched his heartfelt campaign to restore our seas to their former glory, just a few weeks before the UN summit in France
Sir David Attenborough is optimistic that his Ocean film, and book, will have the biggest impact of his 70-year film-making career. Colin Butfield has worked with him on both projects and says the natural history veteran, who turns 99 today, firmly believes that the call for industrial fishing to be banned in 1/3 of the ocean could bring about monumental change.
The film-maker and author told the Mirror: 'At the screening this week David got a standing ovation from 2,200 people and he was really delighted. He said to me,'This might just change something. And if it doesn't, I don't know what will.'

The film, specifically shot and designed to be watched on the big screen ahead of next month's UN Ocean conference in France, shows how quickly our seas can recover if simply left alone. The problems are caused by super trawlers, often not headquartered in the UK, which hoover up everything and cause widespread destruction on the sea-bed.

'We needed to show the ocean at its most spectacular and at its most damaged,' Colin explains. 'And we wanted to film places which had actually recovered and show it on a massive scale. It's persuasive when you can see what can be achieved.'
Colin, who has collaborated with Sir David on several previous projects, said the idea to campaign for change by charting 100 years of the ocean came about three years ago. 'Back at the start, David said, 'If actually we pulled this off, the ocean in 50 years could be richer than anyone alive has ever seen it.'
Colin said he would be 'stunned' if anyone watching the film didn't come away thinking that some fishing methods are destroying the environment and, if fixed it, it could bounce back really fast. 'This would massively help with tackling climate change as well,' he explains, saying that the responsibility for this now lies with governments. 'They can easily, almost at the stroke of a pen, make this decision,' Colin said. 'It's one of those rare chances for politicians to do something that is fundamentally good.'
The team behind Ocean, now showing in cinemas, is optimistic that the strategy can work. 'If you protect 1/3 of the ocean the bounce back would be so big that we'd be able to catch much more fish than we catch today. Economically this is a no-brainer - and it's great for the UK's fishing communities who will benefit.'

It's not just our children and grandchildren that will benefit, it's all of us. 'This could have a massive impact within a decade.'
Sir David may be one year away from his centenary, but he remains unassailable when it comes to natural history presentation. Colin said: 'It's incredible. He has that way of turning it into something so much better than if anybody else did it. It's his lived experience - I'd wager he's seen more of the natural world than any person that's ever lived. How do you replace that? You just can't. He's a one off.

'I genuinely think he'll never retire. His scripts are exceptional, I honestly think it's some of the best work he's ever done. His pieces to camera - I've never seen him do better. He's such a genius. If he can write like this now, why stop?'
After all the excitement of the past few days, Sir David planned to celebrate his birthday quietly today, with close family.
'Two days ago we had the massive film premiere, then last night he had the book launch with Michael Palin, ' Colin said. 'I think today he's going to have quite a chilled day, with a family dinner and a couple of glasses of wine. He deserves it.'

Coronation Street Becky Swain's real killer 'solved' as villain's return 'sealed'

Coronation Street fans think a former villain will be revealed as the person who orchestrated the death of Lisa Swain's wife Becky Swain, and DI Costello could be involved Becky Swain's real killer on Coronation Street may have been rumbled according to fans of the ITV soap. ‌ This week's episodes have left them convinced that an existing character is involved in Becky's death and a possible cover-up. Not only that, but fans think a past villain may return and be revealed as the reason Becky is dead. ‌ It comes as Lisa Swain continued to dig into her late wife's demise in recent scenes, after suggestion she may have been a corrupt officer. DI Costello downplayed this as he called out Lisa for sneaking onto his computer to access Becky's files. ‌ Costello's reaction, the comments from Logan Radcliffe to Lisa's partner Carla Connor and a scene with Lisa's therapist Floyd have now left fans certain a cover-up is confirmed. Not only that, but they think they have figured out how everything ties together. With Costello appearing to know more than he's letting on, fans think he is harbouring the true events that led to Becky's demise, or at least what happened to her. Logan knows something too, with it revealed earlier this year that he and his brother Matty Radcliffe were driving the car that hit and killed her. ‌ Then there's Floyd's weird comment to a mystery person on the phone about a "breakthrough" with Lisa during a session, moments after she confessed her fears Becky was corrupt. Fans are now wondering if Floyd is also involved. But it's a former villain that some fans are convinced knows something, and could even be Becky's killer - or the person who made it happen. Costello could also be tied in according to the theory, and it could see said villain return to the soap. ‌ Logan and Matty were revealed to be working for former baddie Harvey Gaskell months ago. He targeted David Platt via the brothers, and now fans are wondering if he was up to no good with either Becky involved, or she figured out what was going on. Fans have wondered if Costello is corrupt and may have been in cahoots with Harvey, and either he or Harvey had the Radcliffe brothers silence Becky - either because she was about to expose them or because she was involved. Taking to social media, fans theorised Harvey would soon be revealed to be the killer, and this is the "mutual friend" who orchestrated an attack, it seems, on Logan in prison on Friday. Becky was 'caught out', an investigation opened and Harvey, seeing her as a liability gets the Radcliffe's to kill her and Costello to cover it up." Another fan said: "Now I've a feeling that either the counsellor guy or Costello are involved in someway in Becky's death." A third fan said: "Costello is definitely part of this whole thing. 'He's been worried about me since Becky died'. He f***ing killed her."

Coronation Street star unexpectedly axed in shock exit as character 'killed off' without warning

A Coronation Street cast member announced their exit from the ITV soap and fans are convinced their character was killed off. A Coronation Street star has announced their departure from the ITV soap and it's already been broadcast. In a shocking turn of events, their character may have met their demise, after the actor's goodbye message left viewers convinced they were "brown bread". ‌ Logan Radcliffe returned to the ITV drama this week, receiving a visit from Carla Connor whilst behind bars. She was frantic for answers about what had happened to Becky Swain, the late wife of her girlfriend Lisa Swain. ‌ Lisa had been finding it difficult to progress and move forward, uncertain whether Becky was in danger prior to her death and why she died, whether by accident or otherwise, with Carla wanting to help, the Mirror reports. ‌ She went to see Logan who demanded £10,000 for any information he might have about Becky. He then accidentally revealed a name, Tia Wardley, though no context was provided. Regardless of who she is, it was enough to get Logan into hot water with a fellow inmate over a "mutual friend" he'd angered. He was told he had revealed too much, and with that his cell door was shut - making it obvious to viewers he was in serious danger. ‌ As the episode came to an end, actor Harry Lowbridge, who portrays Logan, went on Instagram to announce his departure from the programme - confirming his final scenes had now been shown. With that, fans are certain Logan is now dead. They suspect that whoever Tia was, genuine or not, he'd disclosed too much and an unknown individual had the cellmate punish him for running his mouth. ‌ Fans reckon it will be disclosed that Logan has been killed, murdered in his cell. The actor confirmed no additional scenes were planned when he shared on Instagram: "Farewell Logan. It's been a blast x." Following the post and the broadcast scenes, viewers took to social media to share their theories that the soap had just killed off a character without any prior warning. One viewer said: "So Logan is brown bread then?" ‌ Another viewer agreed, writing: "RIP Logan," as a third viewer stated; "So Logan gets killed off in prison then!" A further comment read; "Harry posting a goodbye? Has Logan been killed in prison?" The reactions continued pouring in with one fan penning: "Okay so when Logan is killed in prison then what?!" Whether Logan has died or remains alive is still to be disclosed despite the speculation, with viewers questioning if he might make a comeback at some stage and whether we'll discover who was behind the assault. Then there's the matter that Tia might or might not be connected to the plot. Why are individuals so frantic to keep the truth hidden as well? Everything will have to be revealed at some point.

Narrated by the living legend that is Sir David Attenborough, this six-part series is about the challenges faced by animal parents around the world. Each episode focuses on animals in different environments across the globe - from oceans to grasslands and jungles. The show will showcase "astonishing, never-before-seen animal behaviours in stunning 6K ultra high definition'. It features music from Tom Howe - who scored Ted Lasso. Jeff Wilson, Parenthood's producer and director, added: 'There have been countless programmes on the animal babies, and whilst full of adorable animals, they have missed the fact that the majority of the narrative in raising young lies with the parents - the choices they make around the environment they bring their young into, the home they create, the relentless need to provide food, the constant protection from threats, the life experiences that their offspring need to be exposed to before they can become truly independent - all of these are mini-dramas in their own right. 'I hope our audience recognise the universal story of parenthood, and that wild animals and humans, have more in common than you might think. By recognising our similarities, we can find an empathy and perhaps even a solution to creating a better world for all of our young.'
