Mulbarton child's rape, murder case postponed as accused seeks treatment

The Citizen25-04-2025
The case involving the brutal rape and murder of a toddler has been postponed to May 8, following delays caused by the accused's health.
Comaro Chronicle reports that Amber Lee Hughes, accused of rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in Mulbarton, Gauteng, appeared briefly in the Johannesburg High Court yesterday.
The matter was postponed yet again, this time due to a severe dental condition that prevented proceedings from continuing last Thursday.
According to her legal representative, advocate Michelle Ives, the accused experienced intense dental pain and was taken to Johannesburg General Hospital. However, she did not receive medical attention, as no doctor was available at the time.
Judge Richard Mkhabela, presiding over the matter, expressed concern over the delay: 'This is regrettable, in the interest of justice, this matter must proceed without further hindrance,' he said.
The judge then issued an order instructing the head of the prison to ensure the accused is taken to a hospital and receives necessary treatment before April 29. Should the accused not be treated by then, the head of the facility is required to provide valid reasons to the court on May 8, the new date set for proceedings to resume.
Advocate Ives also confirmed her intention to call two witnesses to testify on behalf of the accused.
State advocate Rolene Barnard maintained the prosecution is ready to proceed and said delays have not been caused by the state.
The 25-year-old former preschool teacher has pleaded not guilty to the rape and murder of four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita, the daughter of her romantic partner.
According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, Hughes had allegedly developed a romantic relationship with the child's father and moved into his home. The relationship was reportedly troubled and marked by frequent altercations.
During one such dispute, Hughes allegedly threatened to harm the child. It is claimed that when the father left the child in Hughes's care, she allegedly raped the little girl by inserting an unknown object into her private parts.
The court also heard that Hughes allegedly drowned the child in a bathtub. The child's lifeless body was later found floating in the bath.

New police minister warns against 'shoot to kill' tactics

Newly appointed Police Minister, Professor Firoz Cachalia, has warned against the abuse of police power and the use of deadly force, stating it could lead to tragic incidents like the Marikana massacre or the killing of Andries Tatane during a service delivery protest. Speaking shortly after his swearing-in at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday, Cachalia rejected any 'shoot to kill' approach within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Cachalia, a constitutional law expert and former chair of the National Anti-Corruption Council, said he intends to serve with integrity and independence. 'I'm not driven by ambition or political ambition. I've been given a task, and I'm going to tackle that task without fear or favour, subject, of course, to the President's guidance as a member of Cabinet.' Cachalia faced political pressure and ongoing allegations of corruption within the SAPS but maintained a calm, resolute stance, saying external noise would not distract him. 'I understand the moment the country is in and the awesome weight of the responsibility I carry, along with others in government,' he added. Cachalia said a key part of his agenda would be addressing police conduct and reforming accountability systems. He intends to meet National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola on Thursday to discuss operational matters and existing task teams. 'It wouldn't be appropriate to speak before that discussion,' he said. As the outgoing chairperson of the National Anti-Corruption Council, whose term ends this month, Cachalia pledged to advance the council's recommendations in his new role. 'I'm now in a better position than I was as chairperson to take those recommendations forward, and I certainly will,' he said. He plans to bring the council and SAPS leadership together to align on reforms, particularly focusing on whistleblower protection and internal accountability mechanisms. Cachalia also plans to work closely with Justice Minister Ronald Lamola, stating that the fight against corruption must be a joint effort. 'The recommendations impact both of our portfolios,' he said. Cachalia addressed speculation about his status and confirmed, 'Today I was appointed minister, not acting.' uMngeni councillor murder: Traditional leader uncle among 5 arrested

A suspect accused of killing the late uMngeni municipal councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu was his uncle. According to Zululand Observer, Ndlovu was gunned down at his Masosheni home near Mpophomeni in December 2023. The uncle (56), who is an iNkosi (a Zulu word for 'chief'), was arrested on Wednesday and appeared alongside a 34-year-old accomplice in the Howick Magistrate's Court yesterday. The arrest by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team brings the total number of suspects to five. The matter has been postponed to next Friday for a formal bail application. DA leader Francois Rodgers said the iNkosi is allegedly implicated in a separate case involving the murder of his cousin. 'While the DA welcomes the progress in this case, we remain deeply disappointed by the delays in the arrests. The information that ultimately led to the arrests was already available to the authorities by the DA's independent legal team, yet it was disregarded,' said Rodgers. 'The disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has further weakened the state's ability to address politically motivated crimes. 'The presence of senior SAPS intelligence officials during court proceedings only deepens concerns about whether our intelligence structures are being used effectively and impartially in such politically sensitive matters.' Cogta MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi commended the SAPS on the arrest, saying it was a 'significant breakthrough'. Buthelezi praised the task team for their diligent work, which led to this progress and the arrest of more suspects.
