NEW DELHI: Three of the four people arrested for the alleged gangrape of a female student at a law college in Kolkata had planned the act in advance, a police officer said on Monday.
"The entire matter was premeditated.
The trio had been plotting for several days to carry out this torture on the victim. We have found that the victim was targeted by the prime accused from the very first day she got admission to the college," the officer was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.
The
Special Investigation Team
(SIT), made up of nine members, is probing the case. The SIT found that the three accused Monojit Mishra, Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed had earlier been involved in sexually harassing other female students of the same college, as per the PTI report.
The fourth accused in the case is the college's security guard.
According to the police officer, as cited by the PTI, the three accused used to record such incidents on their mobile phones and later blackmailed the victims using the footage.
Kolkata Police is now searching for mobile videos that were possibly recorded by the accused.
"Searches were conducted at the residences of accused Mukherjee and Ahmed on Sunday.

We are looking for footage related to this and possibly other incidents," the officer was quoted as saying by PTI.
Investigators also believe a video clip of the June 25 incident may have been shared.
"We are trying to find out whether those clips were forwarded or shared with some other groups. In that case, we have to get in touch with those who have received that," the officer further said, as cited by the PTI.
The SIT has made a list of more than 25 people, mostly students of South Calcutta Law College, who were present at the college on the evening of June 25.
"All these people will be questioned in connection with the investigation. We have to find out what they witnessed that evening," the officer said.
The incident involves a female student of South Calcutta Law College in the Kasba area of Kolkata. She was allegedly gangraped by three persons, including a former student and two current students of the college.

Govt reviews security, crowd management measures in Puri to ensure devotee safety

Bhubaneswar: In the wake of Sunday's stampede that claimed lives of three devotees outside Gundicha Temple in Puri, state govt has undertaken a comprehensive review of its security and crowd management protocols for the remaining rituals of Rath Yatra, scheduled to conclude on July 8 with Niladri Bije (return of the deities to Jagannath Temple). The chief minister's adviser, Prakash Mishra, who is camping in Puri, expressed his firm commitment to ensuring public safety. "The tragic incident has deeply affected us all, and we are determined to prevent any such occurrences in the future," Mishra, a retired DGP, told reporters on Monday. "We have mobilised our most experienced administrative and police personnel in Puri, working in close coordination with local administration to ensure the remaining festivities proceed without incident," Mishra said. Deputy CM Pravati Parida, who heads the recently constituted ministerial committee overseeing Rath Yatra arrangements, conducted an extensive inspection of Gundicha Temple on Monday. "Every life is precious to us, and we are implementing additional safety measures based on expert recommendations," Parida said. ADG-ranked IPS officer Saumendra Priyadarsi, specially appointed to oversee security arrangements following the tragedy, presented a detailed briefing on enhanced safety protocols to Mishra. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Police sources said a revised multi-layered security system with special emphasis on crowd management and emergency response has been adopted. The govt has particularly focused on strengthening arrangements for three major events — Sandhya Darshan (July 4), Bahuda Yatra (July 5) and Suna Besha (July 6), which traditionally attract lakhs of devotees. "We have established multiple emergency response teams, additional entry and exit points, and deployed advanced crowd monitoring systems. Our priority is to ensure the safety of every devotee," a senior police officer said. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, chief administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, said, "As servants of Lord Jagannath, we have completely surrendered to him. We have sought divine guidance and humbly apologised to the Lord for any shortcomings. We are committed to serving the devotees with utmost dedication." The administration has urged pilgrims to cooperate with security personnel and follow designated pathways and timings for darshan. Emergency medical facilities have been strengthened, with additional ambulances and medical teams stationed at strategic locations outside the Gundicha Temple, the birthplace of the sibling deities.

Cops bust racket of fake merchant navy jobs

Jaipur: City's Shipra Path police busted an interstate cyber fraud racket Monday that duped job seekers with fake Merchant Navy appointments. Two men were arrested, and a cache of incriminating digital evidence was seized, including fake joining letters, chequebooks, and communication records. SHO (Shipra Path) Rajendra Godara said the accused, Vikram Singh (29) and Pradeep Chaudhary (30), were operating from a hotel room for the past 20 days. Their suspicious behaviour and extended stay prompted a discreet surveillance operation. Acting on a tip-off from constable Rajveer Kani, the police team raided the hotel room late on June 28. A search of the room led to seizure of eight mobile phones, a laptop, seven chequebooks, and a QR code scanner of Yes Bank. The digital devices contained over 50 fake joining letters and forged documents related to the Merchant Navy. "Both men were using social media platforms like Facebook to post fake advertisements about vacancies in the Merchant Navy. Interested candidates were lured with promises of lucrative job roles," said Godara. Victims were contacted via the phone numbers posted in the ads, and once convinced, were asked to pay between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh for processing fake documents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bis zu 2.500€ geschenkt* Höffner Jetzt kaufen Undo Police said once the money was received, the accused would send counterfeit agreements and joining letters. When the victims attempted to verify or join the job, they found themselves blocked. The gang would discard their phones and shift location to avoid detection. Cybercrime records from the 1930 portal confirmed that 15 complaints were registered against the account numbers linked to the accused in different states. "This gang has defrauded job seekers across India. Their digital footprint and financial trail are being thoroughly investigated," said Godara.

Man self-immolates outside police stn in Jaipur over financial dispute

Jaipur: A 50-year-old man attempted self-immolation outside the Transport Nagar police station Monday, allegedly over a financial dispute with his business partner. The man, identified as Rajesh Sharma , suffered 50% burns and is undergoing treatment in the burn ward of SMS Hospital. According to police, the incident took place around 8 a.m. when Sharma poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze approximately 10 metres from the police station. Station staff quickly intervened, covering him with blankets and rushing him to the hospital for immediate medical care. A resident of Radhika Vihar Colony, Sharma had reportedly borrowed Rs 1.5 crore from a business partner, identified as Kailash Maheshwari, and invested the funds in various projects. SHO (Transport Nagar) Arun Kumar said that Maheshwari had been demanding his dues for the past three months, which Sharma allegedly failed to repay. Police added that Sharma had filed a formal complaint at the station alleging that Maheshwari was pressuring him over the pending payments. Sharma's family, on the other hand, alleged that Maheshwari had deceived him by taking a share in a piece of land Rajesh had purchased. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuova CUPRA Formentor e-HYBRID CUPRA Configura Auto Undo On June 28, Maheshwari allegedly went to Sharma's house. When he didn't find him there, he called him on his mobile. In front of his children and wife, Maheshwari allegedly abused Sharma over the phone and threatened him to repay the interest. A report was filed at the Transport Nagar police station. However, the family claimed that despite filing the report, it was treated merely as a complaint, and no concrete action was taken. On Monday morning, Rajesh Sharma again visited the police station. When he did not receive a satisfactory response, he set himself ablaze outside the police station. Police, however, said that the entire case is being probed.
