Maharashtra to implement merit-only admission, uniform policy in BARTI, SARTHI, and other institutes

, in Legislative Council, on Thursday said that going forward, admissions to various courses offered by institutions such as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Research and Training Institute (BARTI), Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Research, Training, and Human Development Institute (SARTHI), Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Research and Training Institute (MahaJyoti) and Anna Bhau Sathe Research and Training Institute (ARTI) will be granted solely based on merit.
A uniform policy will also be implemented regarding the number of students, general scholarships, foreign scholarships, and admission procedures across these institutions.
Pawar was responding to a question raised by MLCs Sanjay Khodke and Abhijit Wanjarri regarding the disbursement of rental allowance and contingency funds by SARTHI.
He stated that between 2018 and 2025, around 3 lakh students benefited from government scholarships, tuition fee assistance, and other schemes across 83 courses under SARTHI.
However, only 3,000 students (just 1 per cent) pursued Ph D programs, for which Rs 280 crore was spent. This implies an average of Rs 30 lakh per student over five years, a figure that warrants serious consideration.
Pawar also clarified, admissions will be limited to courses that have proven employment potential, ensuring public resources are directed towards skill-based and career-oriented programs.
A committee headed by the Chief Secretary was earlier appointed to review and recommend a common framework regarding student intake, admissions, scholarships, and academic quality in BARTI, SARTHI, MahaJyoti, and ART institutions.
The report from this committee has now been received, and decisions based on it will be announced shortly, Pawar added.

Rahul attacks Modi govt over Maha farmer suicides
New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday attacked the Modi government over farmer suicides in Maharashtra, saying that it remains indifferent to farmers' plight, even as they are sinking deeper into debt every day. In a post on X in Hindi, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha accused the government of ignoring farmers' demands for a loan waiver and a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for crops. On Wednesday, opposition members walked out of the Maharashtra Assembly twice over issues of farmer suicides and non-payment of dues to soybean cultivators in the state. 'This system is killing farmers -- silently, but continuously and Modi ji is watching the spectacle of his own PR,' Gandhi said. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar claimed in the assembly that 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra between January and March this year. While 200 cases were declared ineligible for aid, inquiries are pending in 194 cases, he said. Gandhi also shared a screenshot of a news report which put the number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra in the first three months at 767. 'Think about it... in just 3 months, 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra. Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 destroyed homes. 767 families that will never be able to recover. And the government? It is silent. It is watching indifferently,' the former Congress president said. Farmers are sinking deeper into debt every day as seeds, fertilizers and diesel are expensive. 'But there is no guarantee of MSP. When they demand a loan waiver, they are ignored,' he charged. 'But (what about) those who have crores? The Modi government easily waives their loans. Just look at today's news -- Anil Ambani's Rs 48,000 crore SBI 'fraud',' he said. 'Modi ji had said that he would double the income of farmers. Today the situation is such that the life of the farmer is being halved. BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya hit back, sharing a chart on X which claimed that 55,928 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra during the 15-year tenure of the NCP-Congress government. 'The politics of counting the dead is disgusting, but it is necessary to show the mirror to people like Rahul Gandhi,' Malviya said.

Karnataka anti-corruption body confirms own officials involved in bribery
In a major embarrassment for Karnataka's anti-corruption watchdog, the state Lokayukta has confirmed that two of its own personnel were involved in a bribery and money-laundering racket targeting government officials.A press note issued by the Lokayukta revealed that Srinath Joshi and police constable Ningappa allegedly extorted money from officials in the Excise Department and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the capital city's primary civic authority. The illegal collections were reportedly referred to using the codeword 'KG' to mask the investigation found that Srinath Joshi attempted to convert the bribe money into white money by routing it through cryptocurrency. He allegedly opened 24 crypto accounts, with transactions totalling over Rs 4 crore already traced in 13 of them. The Lokayukta confirmed that the probe is incident reignited concerns about internal corruption within the Lokayukta itself. Earlier, the Lokayukta had formally requested the formation of a dedicated 24-member vigilance unit to monitor its own staff. However, the state government rejected this request at the response to the revelations, the government has now stated it will take steps to reconstitute an internal surveillance mechanism, using staff transferred earlier from the Anti-Corruption Bureau to the Lokayukta.- Ends
