PTA faces problems in launching 5G
In a briefing to the committee meeting, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, officials said that not all the subscribers would shift to 5G, as the speed of 4G and 3G services would also improve. They said that PTA would take a decision keeping in view the market players.
The meeting discussed the status of the auction of the 5G spectrum. The PTA officials said that 5G required more spectrum. They added that a policy directive was required from the government for the new spectrum.
The official said that a trial was allowed in 2017, while an advisory committee had been formed established on 5G. The PTA also hired a consultant in November, who has submitted its report, they said, adding that the decision about 5G spectrum would be taken by keeping in mind the market players.
IT ministry officials told the committee that currently, there were three bands were available in Pakistan. They added that after the launching of 5G, not all subscribers would shift to it at once. They further stated that the speed of 3G and 4G services would also increase with the launch of 5G.
Also during the meeting, Universal Service Fund (USF) officials gave a briefing to the committee on its projects in the last three years. They said that USF's mandate was to provide telecom services in rural, remote areas and that it had completed 63 projects in the past three years.
Humayun Mohmand asked the officials about the complaints of the people in affected areas of Balochistan. The USF officials replied that the services were down in some areas because of security issues.
The chairman enquired about the reasons for the internet disruption on the motorway. The USF officials replied that the PTA had taken up this issue and the work was under way to rectify the situation.

Mobile internet gender gap further reduced
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's mobile internet gender gap has reduced from 38 per cent to 25 per cent - marking a major step forward in the country's digital gender inclusion efforts. Women's mobile internet usage has also increased from 33 per cent to 45 per cent, according to the latest GSMA report. Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja during second meeting of the Steering Committee on Digital Gender Inclusion in Islamabad, where a detailed review of the implementation progress of the Digital Gender Inclusion Strategy was conducted, said that building a gender-inclusive digital society is at the heart of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's digital vision. Highlighting another key success, she shared that under the Prime Minister's Ramadan Package, a pilot project of digital wallets for 800,000 women was successfully executed. She said the initiative had brought visible improvements in financial inclusion and women's empowerment. Khawaja directed that all sub-committees and departments of the IT Ministry must submit quarterly reports on the implementation of the strategy. 'Our KPIs must be based on outcomes, with clear deadlines for every goal,' she emphasised. She added that increased gender-related budgetary allocations are essential for bringing real change. 'This is not just about policies or meetings. When a woman is empowered, it doesn't just change her life—it transforms the lives of entire families,' she said. The PTA chairman also participated in the meeting and was commended by the minister as a 'champion of gender inclusivity.' The PTA appreciated the role of the Secretariat and described its performance as exemplary. Representatives from UNESCO, PTA, GSMA, GDIP, ISOC, EPIC, NCHR, NCSW, Jazz, LUMS, HEC, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, and the Ministry of Federal Education were also present. Over 12mn mobile handsets assembled in Pakistan in Jan-May
ISLAMABAD: A total of 12.5 million mobile handsets were assembled/manufactured in Pakistan in the first five months (January-May) of the calendar year 2025, compared to 0.76 million imported commercially, it was learnt on Thursday. Local manufacturing/assembling plants made 31.38 million mobile phone handsets during the last calendar year 2024, compared to 1.71 million imported commercially. The 12.5 million mobile handsets assembled locally included 6.53 million 2G and 5.52 million smartphones. Besides, as per the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) data, 67% of mobile devices are smartphones, and 33% are 2G on the Pakistan network. Budget 26: Govt looking to boost export of 'made in Pakistan' mobile phones, say assemblers Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $1.356 billion in the first eleven months (July-May) of the fiscal year 2024-25, registering a negative growth of 16.31% compared to $1.620 billion during the same period in 2023-24. In terms of Pakistani rupees, the total value of mobile phone imports stood at Rs378.248 billion during the first eleven months of FY2024-25. This represents a 17.44% decline when compared to Rs458.124 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year. For the entire fiscal year 2023-24, Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $1.898 billion, up from $570.071 million in the fiscal year 2022-23. On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, Pakistan's mobile phone imports saw a 19.16% decrease, totalling $101.131 million in May 2025, compared to $125.103 million in April 2025. This is a 35.83% decrease year-on-year (YoY) when compared to $157.592 million in May 2024. PTA data revealed that Jazz leads the chart with 3,543 complaints, followed by Zong as the second-most complaint about telecommunications operators with 2724 complaints, The authority received 10,000 complaints from telecom consumers against different telecom operators and cellular operators in May 2025, out of which, 9792 (97.92%) were resolved. Official data revealed that the complaints were received against various telecom operators, including cellular mobile operators (CMOs), Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), long-distance international (LDI) operators, wireless local loop (WLL) operators, and internet service providers (ISPs), during May. More luxury items set to attract sales tax in upcoming Pakistan budget Cellular mobile subscribers constitute a major part of the overall telecom subscriber base. Therefore, the maximum number of complaints belongs to this segment. The total number of complaints against CMOs by May stood at 9,131, out of which, 9,003 (98.6%) were addressed. According to the PTA data, 3,543 complaints were received against Jazz, out of which, 3,517 (99.3%) were resolved. Further, 1,722 complaints against Telenor were received, out of which, 1,686 (97.9%) were resolved. Likewise, 2,724 complaints were received against Zong, out of which, 2,687 (98.6%) were addressed. A total of 1,129 complaints were received against Ufone, out of which 1,100 (97.4%) were resolved. PTA also received 126 complaints against basic telephony, out of which, 113 were addressed during May with a resolution rate of 89.7%. Furthermore, 695 complaints were received against ISPs, of which, 629 (90.5%) were addressed.

PTA introduces tax-free mobile registration for overseas Pakistanis

Under this initiative, temporary visitors can register their personal mobile devices for a period of up to 120 days during each visit to Pakistan. According to a PTA news release, the user-friendly system aims to ensure uninterrupted mobile connectivity, enabling smooth and reliable communication for travelers throughout their stay.
