The 17th edition of Chennai's annual Self-Respect Pride March saw many a colourful turnout, from LGBTQIA+ community members and allies, who were not only from across the city, but also from different corners of the country, and even a few who flew in from as far as London.
Participants arrived decked in rainbow colours, holding placards and raising slogans that called for inclusivity, intersectionality, dignity, and personal rights of LGBTQIA+. The event also saw the participation of celebrities such as Therukural Arivu.
Last-minute hurdles
Activists from Sahodaran, a community development centre for transpersons and LGBTQIA+, said that this year's march came together despite last-minute hurdles in getting permission.
'The permission came in late, so the numbers were slightly lower than last year, but it was heartwarming to see people coming from other cities too. At the event, we introduced a new initiative focused on representing the diversity within the community, by prominently carrying LGBTQIA+ pride flags, such as trans flag, lesbian flag, bisexual flag, non-binary flag, genderqueer flag, and so many,' says Jaya, General Manager at Sahodaran.
An information vehicle carried details about the history of Pride March. Ms. Jaya credited the success of the event to the team of volunteers, both community members as well as allies, who participated wholeheartedly, as well as Egmore police, for their cooperation.
This time, the event also saw some parents joining as allies to support their children from the community.
The Pride March also saw activists taking the mic to speak on issues the community faces – from access to healthcare to employment opportunities and equal rights in marriage.
Showcasing talent
This edition also hosted a 'Naangal' session, where many performers from the community and allies showcased dance, live painting, spoken word poetry, and many more talents.

NYC Pride March 2025 rises in protest: Here's how to watch and why it matters

New York City's 54th annual Pride March steps off today, Sunday, June 29, at 11 a.m., flooding Manhattan streets with thousands celebrating LGBTQ+ resilience. This year's theme, "Rise Up: Pride in Protest," responds to increased political hostility and scaled-back corporate support, with 39% of companies reducing Pride initiatives. The 1.8-mile route begins at 26th Street and 5th Avenue, passing the Stonewall National Monument before dispersing at 15th Street and 7th Avenue. Kazz Alexander, NYC Pride co-chair was quoted as saying, 'We must support one another, because when the most marginalized among us are granted their rights, all of us benefit.' 'Pride is not merely a celebration of identity—it is a powerful statement of resistance, affirming that justice and equity will ultimately prevail for those who live and love on the margins," Alexander continued. For those unable to attend, ABC-7 (WABC-TV) will broadcast the march live starting at noon ET, with free streaming available on Grand Marshals Karine Jean-Pierre, activist Marti Gould Cummings, DJ Lina, Elisa Crespo, and advocacy group Trans formative Schools will lead the procession. Concurrently, PrideFest – the city's largest LGBTQIA+ street fair – runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. along 4th Avenue. Despite heightened security with 10,000 barriers and police patrols, officials confirm no credible threats exist. The march commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, where patrons of the Greenwich Village gay bar resisted police harassment, igniting the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. When same-sex intimacy was criminalized, bars like Stonewall provided rare safe havens. The first anniversary march in 1970 launched this tradition of protest and visibility, leading to President Clinton declaring June Pride Month in 1999 and President Obama designating Stonewall a national monument in 2016. Today's event embodies that legacy, challenging ongoing discrimination while celebrating hard-won freedoms as millions rally worldwide.

NYC Pride Parade 2025: Full route, schedule, theme, and how to watch live

Source: Getty Image As Pride Month comes to a close, cities across the U.S. are gearing up for one last weekend of celebration, reflection, and visibility. And at the heart of it all is New York City—widely considered the birthplace of the modern Pride movement. NYC's annual Pride March commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal moment that sparked a nationwide push for LGBTQ+ rights. Over the years, the event has grown into one of the most significant Pride gatherings in the world, blending protest, celebration, and powerful calls for justice. What's the theme for NYC Pride 2025? This year's theme is 'Rise Up: Pride in Protest.' According to organizers at Heritage of Pride, the message reflects both urgency and legacy. Source: Getty Image 'As the LGBTQIA+ community faces increasing hostility and legislative attacks, this year's theme is a reflection of the Pride movement's origins in protest—and is a powerful call to action for our communities and allies to rally and march in defiant celebration, advocacy and solidarity,' they said in a public statement. History of the parade While many refer to the event as a parade, Heritage of Pride—the nonprofit that organizes NYC's Pride events—intentionally calls it a march. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo The distinction matters. The roots of the event are deeply activist. The march honors the Stonewall Uprising of June 28, 1969, when a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village ignited spontaneous protests that lasted for days. At the time, same-sex public displays of affection were criminalized, and queer spaces were often subject to harassment and surveillance. Bars like the Stonewall Inn, many of them run by organized crime, offered rare safe havens where LGBTQ+ individuals could simply exist and express themselves freely. But that early morning raid — and the resistance it sparked — became the catalyst for what is now recognized as the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. A year later, in 1970, the first Pride march made its way from the Stonewall Inn to Central Park. It wasn't about celebration—it was about visibility and defiance. Over time, the event evolved into a blend of both. In 1999, President Bill Clinton officially declared June as Pride Month. And in 2016, President Barack Obama designated the Stonewall Inn a national monument, cementing its place in American history. Source: Getty Image When is the NYC Pride march? The 2025 NYC Pride March will take place on Sunday, June 29, beginning at 11 a.m. ET. With thousands expected to attend, the march promises to be one of the most powerful moments of the month. What is the NYC Pride Parade route? This year's route will begin on 5th Avenue between 25th Street and 8th Street, according to the New York City Department of Transportation. Marchers will head south along 5th Avenue before turning west on 8th Street. The procession will then move through Christopher Street, passing the Stonewall National Monument, before heading north on 7th Avenue. The march concludes in Chelsea, dispersing at 16th Street and 7th Avenue, near the New York City AIDS Memorial. How to watch the NYC Pride Parade If you're planning to attend in person, for the best spot get there early. Prime spots along 5th Avenue, Christopher Street, and near Stonewall tend to fill up fast with longtime Pride-goers, families, and allies alike.
