SA's Ryan Sandes finishes second at Cocodona 250 — after running 402km
The veteran South African is a former winner of one of the world's biggest ultra trail races, the Western States 100.

South African veteran ultra-distance trail runner Ryan Sandes has finished second at the gruelling Cocodona 250 race in the United States.
The 43-year-old South African, who won the famous Western States race in 2017, finished the 250 mile race (402km) through the Arizona desert in a time of 61 hours, 21 minutes and four seconds (61:21:04). He finished overnight on Wednesday (SA time).
The race was won by American Dan Green (28) in a record time of 58 hours, 47 minutes and 29 seconds.
It was Green's first race over 100 miles. Sandes' time was also better than the previous mark.

The women's race was won by Rachel Entrekin (33), who defended the title she won last year. She finished in a time of 63:58:15, also a new record. She was fourth overall.
The race started on Monday.
The elevation gain (or height climbed) is roughly 40,000 feet, which in metres is 12,000 or 12km.
This year's race had 307 starters and they have until Saturday to complete the event, that is 125 hours.
According to the organisers the Cocodna 250 'takes runners across extremely varied terrain from the Sonoran desert to the 9,301ft summit of Mount Elden and through the largest ponderosa pine forest in the world. The course is 91 percent trail (45 percent of that is single track) and nine percent pavement.'
Sandes is said to have slept for only 30 minutes during his run.

The playoff had returned to the par-three 15th at Detroit golf Club for the second time in the playoff when Potgieter, who had missed winning putts on the two prior extra holes, sank the winning putt after Greyserman missed a 34-foot birdie putt. Potgieter's Dramatic Comeback Leads to Playoff After Tough Start 'Finally got one to the hole and saw the ball roll end over end and just knew it was going to go in,' Potgieter said. 'I'm just happy to walk away as a winner.' Greyserman and Kirk each shot 67 and 54-hole leader Potgieter fired a 69 to finish deadlocked after 72 holes on 22-under 266. Potgieter made two bogeys in the first five holes but battled back with birdies on three of the last six holes and a clutch five-foot par putt at 18 to make the playoff. 'It was definitely a tough day,' Potgieter said. 'The start didn't go my way. I struggled to make putts, left a lot short.'

Vincent Kompany's side will now play European champions Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta on Saturday for a place in the last four. Flamengo, backed by a huge and passionate following at Hard Rock Stadium, bow out of the tournament despite a performance of real determination from Filipe Luis's team. It took just six minutes for Bayern to grab the lead when Joshua Kimmich whipped in a corner and Flamengo defender Erick Pulgar's header flashed into his own net off the far post. Four minutes later and Bayern had doubled their advantage. Dayot Upamecano won the ball inside Flamengo's half and fed Kane whose low shot deflected off Leo Ortiz and rattled into the bottom corner. German Champions vs. Copa Libertadores Winners: A Thrilling Match The German champions looked like they were going to run away with the game but the three-times Copa Libertadores champions were able to find a foothold in the game. Luiz Araujo forced Manuel Neuer into action with a dangerous snap shot and then the winger went close again with a shot on the turn which flew just wide of the post. Flamengo were rewarded for their efforts in the 33rd minute when after the dangerous Araujo played the ball in from the left, the ball fell to Gerson who unleashed a thunderbolt which rocketed past Neuer to bring the bulk of the 60,914 crowd to their feet. But all that good work from the Rio team was undone four minutes before the break when Araujo's poor clearance landed straight at the feet of Leon Goretzka who had the time and space to settle himself before, from over 20 yards out, placing his shot into the corner to make it 3-1.
